Mr Witchy spent 12 hours working yesterday on a doomed project drop-dead deadline of 12:01am.
He knew it wasn't going to happen. He told his stupidvisors - on Friday (not to mention that he's been telling them for months now) - that it couldn't happen. He told them all he way up to the vice President of the entire company that it can't happen in time. No one wanted to hear it. All they said was "work 'til it's done or you drop dead - we don't really care which".

Nice people, aren't they, to tell that ^ to a 67-year-old man with a known heart condition? (Remember, Mr Witchy's immediate stupidvisor broke HIPAA law and told people at work what Mr Witchy's medical records stated about his bad heart valve months ago. That's still in court, that lawsuit we started against the company and this particular stupidvisor.) Whatever. This is one of two top health care companies in the U.S. Yep. One of the two top major medical labs in this country. These people handle roughly half of all medical specimens (your blood, your urine, your stool, yur tissue samples, your drug testing, etc., if you're American and inside the U.S.A.). But they think nothing of breaking HIPAA rights of one of their own employees. I no longer let this lab handle ANY of my own specimens; ALL of my doctors know why... I make certain that the other medical lab picks up and handles my own specimens. Just sayin'.

Last night, Mr Witchy hit an impasse: He can't possibly continue writing the software in the remaining alloted code today without certain tools which he requested months ago, and has been repeatedly asking for on a regular basis since. It can't be done - not even by 4 or 5 people writing the software. Not without these tools to shorten matters. He phoned the President of this company at home last evening to notify him of this.

"Well, can't you just buy them and download them?"
NO. They require receiving a key, which [Mr Witchy] can't get until Mondays. The other end only works Mondays thru Fridays, and only a half day on Fridays, at that!
"Well, maybe you'd better get cracking, then, because your deadline is still a minute after midnight tomorrow." (that's tonight, Sunday)

Mr Witchy blew his lid. He stopped working around 2:00am and went to sleep. He woke up late, exhausted, and after brunch - it was close to noon - he decided that he was going to go over to nearby Branch Brook Park to the Bloomfest. (the Japanese cherry blossom festival) Branch Brook Park, in Newark (NJ) has THE LARGEST collection of blossoming cherry trees in the United States. Yes, it's far bigger than D.C. In fact, our cherry blossoms make the ones in D.C. look like "a couple of backyard bushes". Branch Brook Park's cherry blossoms are very well known and extremely well attended! Thousands and thousands of Japanese tourists come over here from japan every year to see our cherry blossoms. They hold a festival in our park each year. While we pay a lot of tax money to pay our Essex County police and all of their necessary equipment for these two weeks, each year... we also get much back, in the form of lots of tourist dollar$$$. It's a better than break-even exchange for us Essex county residents, believe me. SO, Mr Witchy decided that we were going over to Branch Brook Park, since it poured rain last weekend, and most of the blossoms may be gone (dropped) by next weekend.

We spent 4 hours in the park under the lovely cherry blossoms... as well as the flowering pear blossoms and the forsythia... not to mention all of the dogwood and the magnolia trees' flowers!

Then we came back home, and Mr Witchy went to work on his futile job.

ME - I don't know what to do or say. I'm inclined to tell him to tell them to eff off.
He says that since he will have put in 24 hours in 48 hours (2 days), and since that's all extra time over and above his usual 40 hours + that he will work this week... even though he does not get overtime (ie - time and a half), and it's just straight hourly pay - my Oldsmobile does need an $750 total suspension job... and we are still paying off his car's tranny job (still owe $400 on that)... and his car still needs rear brakes and a new air conditioner condenser unit as the old one is not working and summer heat will be upon us all too soon... and my Land Cruiser still needs another engine from the junkyard ($1100 inc installation). WELL, this 24 hours' worth of money that we didn't have and wouldn't normally have to pay bills with WOULD get us more than half the way there... pay for more than half of the money necessary to take care of both cars and the truck, too! Mr Witchy also points out to me that once midnight tonight comes and goes and this stupidly-planned project hasn't made it's deadline, they re going to insist upon another stupid-silly deadline... and then they will force him to work more insane hours again - either 18 hours Monday & Tuesday and/or another 25-30 hour weekend next weekend, also. That would get us well over the car/truck money we need AND get us well into the money we need to replace Mr Witchy's old dead laptop. I mean a full-bells-and-whistles portable server laptop that he can do real development work on. He says what he needs should cost about $5500 or so. IF Mr Witchy can survive these hours for a while, we can pay for his car, my car, my truck, and Mr Witchy's laptop... and maybe update his ancient portable navigator thingy that he loves so much. Hmmm

Am I wrong? Or is Mr Witchy wrong? I say he's getting a bit too old to keep on doing this... he says that he'd better do it while he still can... Which of us is right??

I'm still trying to find an affordable bricks & mortar shop space for my antiques business... the 1840s Victorian house that I've been using as a storefront is going to be sold and I will have to get out soon. sigh I spend part of the morning searching for an affordable storefront, too.
