Security Minister Peter Bunting Breaks Down: Only God Can Solve Crime Problem

Has it really gotten that much worse or is this frustration with same ole, same ole? Can't say I've seen anything worse than normal by Jamaica's standards and I check the papers daily. It is not a good look though when your security minister is almost moved to tears in apparent frustration and calling for divine help. Rumour has it that he may be shuffled out of the cabinet or into another ministry so I wonder if that have anything to do with this emotional display.

Peter Bunting in an emotional presentation, where he almost shed tears said ” despite the efforts of the security forces, I am convinced that only divine intervention, can solve Jamaica’s crime problem”.

Mr Bunting said ” I am going through a dark path, I see the security forces working day and night and despite those efforts we are seeing very little headway in this crime fighting efforts. Despite the lack of success, I will keep moving on in the effort, knowing that I have support”

At one point in the presentation, Peter Bunting paused, fighting hard to hold back tears before continuing with his voice cracking as he tried desperately to avoid breaking down completely.

His mother died on the 8th, he made the statement on the 13th....

He got robbed the previous week...

and this is what he said...


"I am convinced that the best efforts of the security forces by itself will not solve the crime problem in Jamaica, but it is going to take divine intervention, touching the hearts of a wide cross section of the society. I am not embarrassed to say that right now as Minister of National Security, I am going through a kind of a dark night of the soul. We are trying very hard as a Ministry; I see the men and women of the security forces trying very hard, I see the leadership both of the police and the military working hard and so much effort is being made and yet so little headway, such slow headway is coming out in the statistics."



Apart from the Divine intervention there is nothing wrong with the comment. As an atheist I object to any god reference in government .. But he was at a religious event for police. And there was much chest beating and moral posturing. God should be left in church, the minister was in "church" and that was his audience.

This statement strikes me as less pompous than the usual utterances of our political and contains a truth that is not addressed.. The security forces cannot solve the crime problem in isolation, neither can the justice system that is even less efficient than the security arms of the country. The minister cannot.... I believe that crime is only partially linked with poverty (Haiti which is poorer than Jamaica, with a lower murder rate ). There is a social issue that has to be addressed as well. To me the police have to work smarter not harder... And society has left the crime issue to the police with ex judical killing the norm.

Had the minister reiterated to the police to have faith in the justice system and lessen the number pf suspects who died, I would have been happy. for them to respect human life for Jamaicans....And put it in some moral context . (last night I heard a report on BBC world service that the number of death attributed to the police has increased in the first quater of the year).

When it has gotten to the leadership level then you know there is no hope...he sounds like he has given up. The short term fixes of curfews and round ups are band aids. There seems to be a need for a changing of minds. What do you think is the solution?
