Some of the parents deserve to be horse whipped for the suffering they have inflicted on their own children due to their own irresponsible choices. Don't give me any garbage about White supremacy. Until you can afford to provide for a child, use birth control or keep it zipped (for men) and your legs closed (for women) if you aren't responsible enough to use it.

See some of the babies who come back to hospital weighing less than their birth weight. Watch a child die because they are so malnourished that their internal organs have started to break down. thirty years ago both China and India forced women to limit their familiy... yet now there is constant discussions in both these countries that they may be running out of people in thirty years time as their competitive advantages are lost with a smaller populations.. China is thinking of ending its one child rule.....

And likely the era of one child per family has come to a logical conclusion. Their standard of living has certainly improved. India, not so much. Their efforts to curtail population growth have not been as effective.

Russia today are in a quandry of a falling population two weeks ago Putin was putting this issue as a security threat...Western Europe has an issue of needing migration to prevent the economies imploding.... Spain after franco introduced birth control and with the economic down turn this has led to the falling population.. Brazil has a falling popuation issue with a falling birth rate...Indonesia is selling themselves as a stable economy with a growing population...Norway is complaining about the falling population, Denmark, Italy....Most of Europe has less than replacement population growth... And who will replace these in the next fifty years peoples from the third world...!!!!!

Yet they don't have a segment of their populations starving and their people aren't living in shacks.

Race does not come into this. Responsible human beings don't just pop them out like rabbits. God gave us brains to use and make smart choices. Our community would be in much better shape if parents had only as many children as they can afford to support. I have seen children not just in Jamaica but also in places like Mumbai and parts of the US living in conditions that are not even fit for a sewer rat. Same on the society for allowing the situations that cause this set of circumstances to continue decade after decade.

In Jamaica I see a lot of parents coming home exhausted and taking their frustration out on the poor children who did not ask to be born. It is SO unfair and my heart goes out to the poor children who suffer while irresponsible parents insist on having out their lot.

I am not asking anybody to do anything that I haven't done. There is absolutely no way that I could have kept 2 or more children in private school, summer camp, soccer, hockey, riding lessons, braces, and provided clothing and food for them. So, I had one child. If I had stayed married, probably could have done this for 2 children but definitely not 3 or more. Also, I am not speaking about theory here so something I have read about in books. I have seen some of my own relatives have child after another with no thought about how they would survive. Fortunately, due to support of the extended family and the tenacity of some of the children, they have done well.

Most important, children need time love and attention. There is no way that 10 children will get the same amount of attention as two.

Listen I am not regurgitating anything. I have come to my own conclusions after working with families from some of the poorest areas of Jamaica and watching babies die of malnutrition. Try that for a while and then come spout your eediat arguments.

This is going to sound harsh but no one tell her fe open her crotches, rooks, and breed when she can't even feed herself and de pickney she ave already. There are some things we ALL have control over and whether or not we have sex and whether or not we take birth control are two pretty obvious ones. We are not dogs in heat you know.

Yes we need to have compassion. Yes we need to help those who have fallen on hard times. Yes we need to help those who have been trapped in poverty. However, I have no sympathy for women who can't even take care of the children they have and yet they go out and have more. I have even less sympathy for for the vermin who see her situation, see that she has children already suffering and who lie dung wid her anyway and den dig off de moment dem hear tse she full up. I repeat responsible adults, make responsible choices. One of those choices is to give some thought to how one is going to provide for children before one has them!! To just keep having children when one doesn't have a hope in hell of providing for them is sheer lunacy. If you can't see that, then both of you and the one name blugiant have a serious problem with logic and reasoning.

Just because some individuals who have had the misfortune of being raised in the dungle and surviving on scraps of garbage have overcome all odds and succeeded does not mean that this is a recipe for responsible parenting.

Majesty Gardens And Tivoli Gardens

Mama Joyce, at 73, remembers when things were better in Majesty Gardens, a section of Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller's South West St Andrew constituency, which was only a 'Pen' when Mama Joyce started living in that community in 1949.Majesty Pen turned Majesty Gardens, like several other pens around the downtown core of the city which were renamed gardens or towns, has seen deterioration rather than improvement over the lifetime of Cynthia Bryan, better known as Mama Joyce, and certainly over the 36-year stewardship of Mama P as MP.
Meanwhile, just a mile or so east along Spanish Town Road, Back-o-Wall, once "the rectum of the city", in Edward Seaga's excremental metaphor, was converted with state money into Tivoli Gardens with decent housing, a high school, health centre and community centre offering cradle-to-grave 'development'. But as rectal as Back-o-Wall was, a home for hustlers and a lair for petty thieves operating in the market strip, that shanty town didn't have a 'jail' operated by a don in which, according to a former general in the system testifying against the extradited last don, dissidents sentenced to death could be executed by chainsaw, hatchet or gun.
As the Inner-City Housing Project Unit of the NHT moved into Majesty Gardens, the home of the Rat Bat gang, with $300 million of NHT contributors' money to construct 96 houses among 600 families, media in tow have provided us with a ringside seat of the deplorable conditions in the rebranded Pen.
In the Gleaner report filed by Tyrone Reid last Sunday, 65-year-old Benjamin 'Australia' Morris lamented, "You don't see a dog life we living down here? You don't see a swamp we live in?"
Australia lives in a broken-down captured house that he and his children had taken over after the owners fled from the violence engulfing the community. A common story among the pens turned gardens and towns around the downtown core of the city.
Renewal programme
Just over a week before Australia's lament, Kelcy-Ann Wynter had wept uncontrollably as she poured her and her community's woes into the comforting bosom of Mama P there to launch a community renewal programme.
The 32-year-old mother of two has become so weary of her life-long ordeal that, upon seeing her member of parliament, Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, she burst into tears. She said no one should live in her community.
Where the absence of basic amenities is not the subject of residents' gloom, the wanton gang warfare in the area - which has, on occasion, accounted for the largest number of deaths in the St Andrew South Police Division, suffices.
Majesty Gardens has been ranked among Jamaica's poorest communities. Comprising mostly board dwellings, its squalid conditions rob residents of their dignity, forcing the more impoverished to use nearby gullies, filled with debris and flies, as makeshift bathrooms.
Two of the most destructive problems facing these ravaged inner-city communities struggling with reverse development were raised in the tear-drenched encounter between Mama P and Kelcy-Ann Wynter. Ms Wynter herself raised one and the MP/prime minister the other. Ms Wynter pointed out the division of the community, "up the top is Majesty Gardens and down the bottom is 'Back To'. I am from 'Back To'." These divisions have led to countless senseless tribal conflicts taking lives, destroying property, and reversing development.

I am in the middle of the ‘dungle’ seated on a rusty old paint pan reasoning and grounding with the elders. There are other people around in this landfill place of garbage, scattered in all directions, diligently searching and salvaging from the mountains of city waste.

Life here is a cauldron of competing interests with flocks of garlings and groups of vultures pecking their crawls full as bulldozers gather and pile fresh loads into humongous heaps.

It is inconceivable how one could decry these peoples way of life to alienate themselves from abstract poverty when no one provides any other real substitute other than moral persuasion.


As the brothers answered my questions, I could see an endless line of smoking trucks making their way slowly into the ‘dungle.’ It is in here the face of poverty exposes itself, bare and dare while using the landscape paradoxically as an ease to the people’s suffering.


The brethrens are ‘happy’ to see me and are eager to talk. They know fully well there is nothing much I can do other than to publish their stories in the hopes that the ‘bigger heads’ are aware of their conditions.


“Things and times are getting harder,” A Rastafarian brethren laments “the government doesn’t care about us, but we care about ourselves, zeen. Our livelihood depends solely on what we find but I and I can assure you that such is nothing of consequence mi brother.”


Amid the stench and unbearable heat, a gentle wind comes and goes and as stories of hardship and struggles are told a roaring Air Jamaica plane passes overhead. Each man’s story runs parallel with the other, as men, women and children gather bits of copper and other metals and just about anything else that can be sold to earn a dollar.



There’s an old saying that one man’s junk is another man’s treasure but in these piles of garbage there is simple no treasure. A realm of possibilities lies in their search and it is to find something of value, anything that can help put food in their children’s stomach as life's endless struggle continues into the unknown.
