Twice at the Oval in 84 and 88...

But the memory for me was Marshal in 88....second innings... He was bowling at medium slow... .... It was watching a cat play with mice.. intense, varied...He never bowled a single fast delivery...and I wanted to pad up and face him

And in 84 Holding the last time he was on the long run up....To this day I never understood how the English supporters stood up and cheered him. He says he decided to do it because a English supporter asked him .. I thought is because we were shouting long run up when he got the ball.....But there was a spell of bowling Agnew and Ellision... medium pace, line and length... they took a couple wickets but the bowling was controlled... pinned back the west indies.. .th

Bengaluru: Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Chris Gayle cracked the fastest century ever in cricket history when he reached the three-figure mark, laced with 11 sixes and 8 fours, in just 30 balls against Pune Warriors in the IPL match at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore on Tuesday. The West Indian went on to score an unbeaten 175 off 66 balls. In his scintillating knock, Gayle smashed 154 runs in boundaries, which included a total of 13 fours and 17 sixes.

During his astonishing innings, Gayle broke many records. He surpassed record of fastest ton in IPL history, which was scored by Yusuf Pathan of Rajasthan Royals off 37 balls with 9 fours and 8 sixes against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2010. In T20 cricket, A Symonds has scored a century off 34 balls for Kent. Shahid Afridi has scored the fastest ODI ton off 37 balls against Sri Lanka in 1996. As a result, Gayle recorded the fastest century ever in the history of the game.
Gayle also beat the previous individual highest score in IPL which was made by Brendon McCullum of Kolkata Knight Riders (158 not out off 73 balls) against RCB in the inaugural IPL season in 2008.
Thanks to Gayle’s knock, RCB recorded the highest ever team score in IPL. RCB made 263/5 in 20 overs against Pune Warriors. The previous highest team score was posted by Chennai Super Kings when they made 246/5 in 20 overs against Rajasthan Royals at Chennai in IPL 2010.
Gayle also recorded the maximum number of sixes in an IPL innings when he hammered a total of 17 sixes in his knock of 175 not out. His 50 came off only 17 balls, which is another record in IPL history. In total, Gayle has struck 163 sixes from 50 IPL innings so far.

We could debate for hours on who's top dog in modern Test cricket, or who could win your one-day fantasy team the most points. When it comes to Twenty20 cricket, though, there are few who would dispute that Chris Gayle is No. 1. If you want a lesson in T20 batting, you couldn't do better than watching Gayle construct an innings. And on Thursday night, for Royal Challengers Bangalore, he put together another one of those incredible knocks that have earned him this reputation; the sort of innings he has proven time and again to be the template for T20 success, this time flattening Kolkata Knight Riders along the way.Leading up to the match, Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir spoke of the challenge facing his team in a newspaper column. "Half my day is gone answering questions on how will we stop Chris Gayle," he wrote. "One suggestion from a more enlightened team-mate was to lock him in his room." Jocular that may be, but it does reflect the general perception. Because, really, how do you stop someone who marries awesome power with meticulous planning and flawless execution so consistently?
This was the case at the Chinnaswamy Stadium; Gayle's 85 not out off 50 balls reiterated that the shortest format is not so much about mindless slogging, as about launching calculated assaults. Royal Challengers were set 155, not a daunting total given the batsmen-friendly track and relatively short boundaries. Gayle was coming off two failures against Sunrisers Hyderabad - in the away game, he had fallen first up to the part-time offspin of little-known Hanuma Vihari, prompting talk of how he is prone to struggling early on against spin to resurface. Subsequently, the key battle in the Knight Riders game was touted to be Gayle v Sunil Narine.
How does Gayle respond? No egotistical attempts at blitzing Narine. No change in strategy at all. He just did what Gayle does: show caution where necessary, pick which bowlers to target, dispatch balls that deserve to be dealt with, play straight rather than resort to typical limited-overs fare - ramp shots, reverse-sweeps and the like.
Narine was nudged for singles and defended, even left alone when required. Gayle might have been beaten a couple of times, but he made sure he cut out the risks. In nine balls against Narine, he managed just four runs but did not let it worry him.
Neither did the Bangalore crowd let it worry them. If Virat Kohli swipes across the line and is dismissed, you might hear a few chuckles at IPL grounds. When MS Dhoni defends, questions of whether he is taking it too late arise. These days even Sachin Tendulkar cannot escape a few murmurs of disapproval when he scores too slowly. But in Bangalore, while Gayle remains at the crease, the crowd is never in doubt that Royal Challengers hold the upper hand. Even if he leaves balls outside the offstump; on Thursday, as Gayle saw off Narine, there were shouts of "well left" echoing around my stand, while a spectator in the row behind me was busy explaining to his family that "this is how he bats, watch, he will explode soon enough".
This crowd has good reason to put so much trust in their superstar and his methods. In 2012, Gayle scored 31% of Royal Challengers' runs. At the Chinnaswamy, he averages 60 and has a strike rate of 170. Second-best Kohli averages 30 at the ground, scoring those runs at the rate of 125 per 100 balls.

Chris Gayle can shatter dreams. Ask Ishwar Pandey, the highest wicket-taker in this year's Ranji Trophy, who got smashed for 21 in his first over this IPL. Ask Mitchell Marsh, whose decent run with the ball this tournament was blown out of his memory, with his first over going for 28. Ask Aaron Finch, the third captain for Pune Warriors this season, who bowled an over hoping to restrict Gayle but didn't bowl again after being blasted for 29. Ask Ali Murtaza, a specialist left-arm spinner thrown into the deep end in his first game this season, only to be hammered for 45 in two overs.

The fastest hundred in T20 history was built on the misery of others, most notably a struggling franchise whose owners - they spent US$370 million to buy it - watched shell-shocked at their team's bowlers being taken apart with a ruthlessness only a game of Cricket '97 powered with cheat codes could have matched. After Gayle's onslaught, there was only going to be one result, and further confirmation of that arrived when four wickets fell inside the first six overs of the Warriors chase. Their defeat was the second-biggest in terms of runs in the IPL's six seasons.
The destruction inflicted on the Warriors bowlers broke a series of records. Gayle smashed the fastest century in the format, brought off 30 balls; made the highest individual T20 score (175 not out); struck the most sixes by a batsman in a T20 innings (17); helped Royal Challengers Bangalore hit the most sixes for a team in a T20 innings (21) and reach the highest total in T20 cricket (263).
The helplessness of the Warriors players was writ large on their faces. Luke Wright smiled with trepidation when Virat Kohli took a single to give Gayle the strike off his bowling, Yuvraj just shook his head as he watched one ball after another sail over the boundary rope and pretended to snatch Gayle's bat at the end of the innings as he went over to congratulate him.
The only interruption to Gayle's effort was a 33-minute rain interval. He had warmed up before that with two boundaries off Pandey, and proceeded to smack him for three more in the same over after the rain relented. Unlike some of his innings this season where he was relatively restrained at the start, he came out prepared to attack from the outset today. His previous innings, against Rajasthan Royals, was an unbeaten 49 off 44 balls during which he batted 17.5 overs.
It helped Gayle that Warriors bowled to him on a length, allowing him to hit through the line and straight, with minimum effort that masked the immense power behind his strokes that cleared the boundary with ease. Only one boundary out of the 30 to his name qualified as a mis-hit, an outside edge past short third man. At least two shots cleared the roof, the shot that brought up his century hit it and rebounded back into the lower tiers.
That Gayle was not going to hold himself back, having taken 29 off the fifth over from Marsh, was evident in his approach to spin when Murtaza was brought on in the seventh over. Gayle decided to target the spinner with the turn, slog-sweeping and then smashing him flat for two sixes, then making Finch regret the move to bring himself on, hammering him for four sixes, all on the on-side. A rare yorker outside off from Ashok Dinda that Gayle missed was perhaps the only moral victory he afforded Warriors before reaching his century, a landmark he celebrated with a punch of the gloves then kneeling down and raising his arms.
Murtaza may just have felt he could slip in a relatively quiet over when Gayle had mellowed down, somewhat, after reaching his ton, but Gayle demolished those thoughts. He punished Murtaza for three more sixes in a 28-run over, as Royal Challengers began another phase of domination in their innings after a moment's breather - the last six overs produced 85 runs.
Gayle's innings was supported ably by opener Tillakaratne Dilshan, who was part of a 167-run opening stand, an IPL record, during which he only made 33. He quickly ceded floor to Gayle and played some attractive, text-book shots through point and down the ground. Unlike Dilshan at the start, AB de Villiers was the dominant partner in Warriors' ruin at the death, thrashing 31 in just eight balls in a stand worth 44.
Each played their role in helping Gayle guide the innings, which he did with a big smile, good-hearted banter with the Warriors fielders during the carnage, and an animated reaction when he reached his century. He signed off in the match with gangnam style gig at picking two wickets in the only over he bowled - all a contrast to the man who made his first international appearance against India in Toronto in 1999, when it seemed hard to imagine a debutant as shy as him would one day become one of the most colourful characters on a cricket field.

thans Xav....the third six over cover.... ....And he was off balance out of position almost square on the wicket (postioned as clumsily as Chandurpaul) A half volley drive / pull.. un orthodox.. U are suppose to be over the ball when you hit through cover , forceing the ball down.. ....I think Mathias did that against Andy Roberts in the Shell shield once...I dont think Sobers ever hit one... it takes massive strength to do it... Richards did it....Gordon Greenich did it a few times...I think only West Indians do that... it takes massive amount of strenght and timing....

He is not an elegant bats man... And his foot movement is still crap, he is making half steps.

The thing about batting like that is that even bad bowling takes wickets, the onus is on the batsman not to make a mistake..Watch how wickets fall usually they are the kind of outs that primary school cricket in Jamaica..Gayle did not make a mistake...

Sensing a huge need gap in the market of non-RCB IPL teams, insurance players have started offering a unique product to tailor to those teams that have been at the receiving end of Chris Gayle’s murderous ways.
The ‘Chris Gayle protection cover’ offer, floated by many private players, insures the opposing team against Chris Gayle-related issues such as loss in bowler self-confidence, excessive expenditure on cricket balls that get lost, players who might lose a limb after getting hit, and finally – losing the match itself.
“We realise that Chris Gayle either fires or doesn’t – which makes it a lucrative market for us to enter, as all the teams will want to protect themselves against this monster!,” quipped an agent of a private insurance company. “We charge supremely huge premiums so we remain profitable. The teams are willing to go to crazy lengths!”
This has led to huge sighs of relief by many opposing team players.
“Phew. So now even if I bowl a rubbish over, it’ll be okay. The team will get some compensation!,” said Ali Murtaza, one of the unfortunate victims of Gayle’s incredible 175*, which forced insurance players to think about offering such a product.
Prasanth Parameshwaran, who suffered at the hands of Chris Gayle, going for 37 runs in one over 2 seasons back with the Kochi Tuskers Kerala, lamented, “Damn! “I’m surprised no condom brand has caught up on this protection craze,” tweeted CSK skipper MS Dhoni, showing off his new witty Twitter avatar.
When asked why nobody had bothered to create an insurance product revolving around protection from Ravindra Jadeja, the association of insurance bodies were quick to say that such a product would never be made, since it went against their religious grounds. Sir has done it again.
