The report by the Multilateral Investment Fund notes that the region received a total of US61.3 billion in remittances last year.
This amount represents a year-on-year increase of US$300 million US dollars from 2011.
Of that total Jamaica received more than US$2 billion in remittances last year.
The report notes that remittance flows continue to be an important source of foreign exchange in many of the countries in the region.
It says remittances constitute more than 10 per cent of the gross domestic product in several countries, including Jamaica.
It says these flows also represent an important source of income for the millions of families in the region that receive the transfers to cover basic needs and invest in education, health, housing, and small businesses.
However, the report states that remittance flows in 2012 were slightly affected by increased inflation that exceeded any gains that may have been generated by devaluation of local currencies.
It says this left the purchasing value of remittances with a negative growth of minus 0.7 per cent.
The data is contained in the report titled ‘Remittances to Latin America and the Caribbean in 2012: Differing Behavior among Sub-regions’.
