Early settlers resorted to cannibalism at Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in America, researchers said after unveiling forensic analysis on the bones of a 14-year-old girl.
Facing a period of starvation in the winter of 1609-1610 when about 80 percent of the colonists died, some apparently tried to dig into the brain of a child who had already died, said anthropologists at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.
The girl's skull showed signs of awkward attempts to extract the brain matter, said Douglas Owsley, the Smithsonian forensic anthropologist who analyzed the skull and tibia of the girl who came to Virginia from England.
"The desperation and overwhelming circumstances faced by the James Fort colonists during the winter of 1609-1610 are reflected in the postmortem treatment of this girl's body," said Owsley.
"The recovered bone fragments have unusually patterned cuts and chops that reflect tentativeness, trial and complete lack of experience in butchering animal remains," he added.
"Nevertheless, the clear intent was to dismember the body, removing the brain and flesh from the face for consumption."

The bones were excavated in 2012, and were considered unusual because of the high degree of fragmentation. The girl's teeth and parts of her skull were found as part of an excavation that included butchered horse and dog bones.
The remains provide the first physical evidence that cannibalism did occur at Jamestown. Scholars have long speculated that it was likely because of the unusually harsh conditions the settlers encountered on arrival.
The colony was founded by just over 100 settlers in 1607. Their numbers dwindled to 38 after the first nine months, due to starvation, drought and disease, and left them highly dependent on resupply ships.
Written references to cannibalism have previously been found, according to Smithsonian magazine which reprinted part of an old letter by George Percy, president of Jamestown during what was known as the Starving Time.
He described how the settlers began to eat horses and other beasts, before resorting to dogs, cats, rats and mice and eventually dead bodies from graves.
"And now famin beginneinge to Looke gastely and pale in every face, thatt notheinge was Spared to mainteyne Lyfe and to doe those things which seame incredible, as to digge upp deade corpes outt of graves and to eate them. And some have Licked upp the Bloode which hathe fallen from their weake fellowes."

U know what surprised me... No one posted or asked the most obvious question : what happened to the Africans that lived in Jamestown ? After all there are only conscious Africans on this board . (and me the sell out Taino liar....) This is Y Jamestown is important.....I hesitate to call them slaves as I have been told the language is emotive... But I mean slaves as there were European slaves there as well as Native american captured... There of course may not fit quite with there was no Africans there in the early years butt later as delivered by the Dutch trader / pirate...

I believe that there were a number of colonist were unaccounted for and if memory serves me a number were suspected to have gone south to link with the Spanish in Florida


There was a suggestion that the Africans went Maroon among the locals.. Much in the same manner as happened in Jamaica.. There was a tale that there was at Plymouth rock a African who walked out of the itnerrior who spoke English...

What more interesting was that she was butchered lower down and the attempt to get the brain matter was crude.. A number of scanrios come to mind..

initially the head was removed and discarded.... And some one was not privy to the better meat tried to smash the head to access the nutrition
they initally only ate the better flesh then the one with the butchering skills died....

Interestingly there was a similar story on the great leap forward by the Chinese in the 1950's canibalism... Waht is poinent is that there is an image of Africans as Canibals but there are proven cases of yanki eating human.. the Clark expedition springs to mind.. there are other cases....

The most famous case or popular case of canibalism in America, or as you say Yanki culture is the Donner expedition. In 1846 eighty seven pioneers left Illinois in wagons headed west for California. They did not make it through the Sierra Nevada Mountains because of early snowfall and after food and animals were depleted, they started eating each other. Those that survived were actually brought up on charges by law.

While eating human flesh is repulsive...never say never. The instinctive will to survive is stronger than ones moral code. Of course through out history humans have eaten other humans for warrior ritualistic reasons...not because they were forced to do so for survival, such are the cases that you have presented.

There is a difference of eating human flesh to survive and eating your enemies heart or brain because of superstitious thought that it makes you stronger? You would agree, would you not?
