A couple of days ago, I asked the hairdresser to pin up my hair and tie it with a scarf as I wanted it to look good for today. She said "Be careful with this tie-head business didn't you hear about the Muslim woman wearing the hijab who was spit on.




I now have an abaya and hijab for when I have to go certain places in Middle Eastern countries. I was thinking of getting a niqab and sneaking in to see Farakhan whenever he shows up in Toronto so that no one knows is me. Guess I had better re-think that plan. Here is the story.

Toronto police have launched an investigation into a possible hate crime, after a woman was assaulted entering a plaza near Sheppard Avenue East and Don Mills Road on Monday.


"As she was walking past a gentleman, he spit on her. And we're not sure of the motivation for the crime, there appears to be no motivation other than the woman was wearing a hijab," said Det. Sgt. Jim Gotell.


The man also verbally assaulted the woman.


Police have released security camera images of the suspect.


He's described as a white man, 5'8" with a thin build and blonde hair.

Just reading what you posted about your fear of losing business if you did not dress in the proper or acceptable garb when visiting muslim countries.

Does it not strike you strange that if a muslim woman attended a business meeting in Vancouver or New York City, even if she was invited to the White House to meet the president and wore her traditional muslim outfit it may cause a few heads to turn but in many cases she would be accepted. If she was turned down and lost business because of her dress we would call that racism. But you sound like if you turn up to a meeting in the Middle East with muslims wearing a western style business outfit you will offend those who invited you.

All I can tell you is that Middle Eastern companies have hired me as a Black woman when some Canadian companies have not. I don't support the Muslim religion in any way shape or form but some of my best clients have been Muslims and I am not going to disrespect them. I make sure the prayer mats are provided and that we break for prayer when needed. It is a matter of respect and I am not going to get on my soapbox and start spouting about slavery, history of Arab oppression or proselytizing. Now sometimes the Arab or Hindu people with whom I do business ask me about my faith and definitely I will discuss it but I am not going to ram it down anybody's throat. They know that I am a Christian when they hire me.

No that is not what I said. When I do business in Muslim countries, I wear Western style clothing. However, there are certain place where it would be just plain disrespectful for me to go without an Abaya e.g. Sheikh's palace, mosque, etc. It is a matter of respect for one's hosts, not fear. When I was in Thailand I went to the Grand Palace and we were required to remove our shoes and put on the shoes they provided. Ditto when I have stayed in Japanese ryokans. I know MANY Muslim women who wear Western attire in some settings. I get copies of their passport front pages in advance for the hotel and the photos are in their national dress. I have even seen White folks who are highly qualified passed over for opportunities because they won't conform to corporate norms such as dress codes. I have also experienced this type of thing personally. Not so much dress....but definitely w.r.t. hair. Mind you, I was really stubborn and would not conform to them Dockers, golf shirts dress for casual Friday and I paid dearly for it. Eventually got tired of the foolishness and set up my own business.

There is such a thing as needing to eat and support one's children. Guess what? If it is a choice between being able to provide for my son or not while he was growing up, yup definitely I was going to conform. I have had my own business since he was 7. It hasn't always been easy. It is someone that no one should enter into lightly. Still I don't regret my decision to leave a full time corporate job. Some a de people dem was driving me crazy.

I haven't got a clue what you are talking about. We need to own our mistakes and not always be blaming others. Like it or not, slavery was a part of African culture and this pre-dates the Arabs. If we don't admit our mistakes, we will never heal.

My point is that if slavery had not been a part of our historical culture, it could not have been exploited by foreigners so successfully. We may not want to face or admit this reality but it is reality.

I have also experienced this type of thing personally. Not so much dress....but definitely w.r.t. hair. Mind you, I was really stubborn and would not conform to them Dockers, golf shirts dress for casual Friday and I paid dearly for it. Eventually got tired of the foolishness and set up my own business.



There is such a thing as needing to eat and support one's children. Guess what? If it is a choice between being able to provide for my son or not while he was growing up, yup definitely I was going to conform. I have had my own business since he was 7. It hasn't always been easy. It is someone that no one should enter into lightly. Still I don't regret my decision to leave a full time corporate job. Some a de people dem was driving me crazy.


I haven't got a clue what you are talking about. We need to own our mistakes and not always be blaming others. Like it or not, slavery was a part of African culture and this pre-dates the Arabs. If we don't admit our mistakes, we will never heal.

I wasn't thinking about Africans at all when I referred to birthday suits. I was following your argument to its illogical conclusion. If we are not supposed to dress like those who supported and participated in slavery, we shouldn't be emulating African styles of dress either.
