83-y-o woman chopped to death 'Downtown'; suspect held

EIGHTY-three-year-old newspaper vendor Sylvia Sewell was yesterday chopped to death by a man at the intersection of Orange and Beckford streets, downtown Kingston, from where she operated for many years.
An alleged eyewitness told the Jamaica Observer that the incident happened about 7:30 am and sent other traumatised witnesses scampering in fear. The alleged attacker has since been taken into police custody.

"In all my life I never see anything so cruel. The woman was tending to her business when this man come there and a talk to her, then all of a sudden me hear she say 'mi nuh have it'," said witness, who vends in the area.
The man said what would follow next left him rooted to the spot in fear.
"The woman start walking away from him (the attacker) and him just start chop her from back way enuh!" he said.
"All when the woman drop the man go over her and a still a chop her," said the obviously shaken man.
The incident sent the area into a renzy as people scampered about, bringing traffic in the busy commercial hub to an abrupt halt.
Yesterday, a large crowd gathered to view Sewell's body sprawled in the middle of the road, its head partially severed.
Among the onlookers was Lorna Smellie, a friend of the slain Hannah Town woman, who wept openly.
"How can somebody look at an 80-odd-year-old woman and do her like that?" Smellie asked as she cried.
A policeman, who was standing nearby, attempted to console the woman but he, too, appeared to be overcome with emotions and used his hat to cover his face.
Meanwhile, the alleged attacker was beaten and chopped several times, before he was rescued by the police. He is now admitted to hospital under police guard.

Chop up an 83 YEAR OLD WOMAN just trying to eek out a living by selling her newspapers. Chopped her FROM BEHIND no less!

This is one incident in which I agree with Blu. Let the community deal with this piece of fecal matter of a man. I see the police eventually rescued him from the retribution of those that gathered at the scene. The police should have just turned their backs and let the crowd finish him off.

But what if the attacker was mentally deranged? What if the attacker was using some illicit drug that is cheaply available on Kingston's streets? Where do these drugs come from? Why is an elderly woman forced to eke out a living when others are so wealthy in a tiny economy as Jamaica?

I think the community should examine the root of the problem before being encouraged to obliterate the symptom.

Elderly and frail, 84-year-old Sylvia Sewell did not stand a chance when a man, believed to be of unsound mind, who was sitting beside her newspaper stand in downtown Kingston, suddenly pulled a machete and chopped her to death.
An eyewitness reported that one of Sewell's hands was severed and her head nearly decapitated in the bloody attack near the stall from which she sold The Gleaner and The STAR newspapers under the big tree at the intersection of Orange and Beckford streets.
Edward Smith, another vendor who claimed to have witnessed the incident, said Sewell's attacker sat silently by her stall for several minutes before making his move.
"She get up fi go to har stall and him get up to, tek di machete outta him waist an chop har ya so," said Smith as he pointed to his back.
"Him chop har pan har han' and she drop a grung (ground). Then him go over har and jus start chop har," Smith added as he described the attack on the woman he said he knew for more than 15 years.
The man was reportedly set upon by an angry mob but was quickly rescued by a team of private security personnel in the area who handed him over to the police.
"If dem (security personnel) neva come an tek him wey, a two body di police dem woulda come out ya come find. A dat me a tell you," one visibly angry woman shouted.
The Constabulary Communication Network confirmed the incident, but up to late afternoon could not say whether the suspect was in the custody of the police.
Sewell has been selling The Gleaner and The STAR newspapers for more than 30 years and news of her death left relatives and friends in shock.
"Me can't explain this, me can't even bawl no more. Me inna shock," said Jacqueline Dennis, one of two god-daughters she helped raise.
"Me nah expect this, neither from an unsound man or sound man. (How) you coulda look at a woman like that, her body is so fragile, her face is so wrinkled, and yet still you tek up a machete ... ," Dennis added without completing the sentence.
Reliable vendors
Burchell Gibson, The Gleaner's circulation manager, said he knew Sewell personally and described her as "one of our most reliable vendors".
"Many days she would come by The Gleaner to conduct business. She was always very calm and one of those persons who wanted to do things for herself," Gibson recalled.
Gleaner Managing Director Christopher Barnes said: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of a member of The Gleaner family. The brutal killings being experienced in our country are ruining families and holding back our nation's development. Our hearts and condolences go out to her family and loved ones."
