Jamaican police seize 145 lbs of cocaine worth $500,000 from security van

KINGSTON, Jamaica - Jamaican authorities say they have seized about 145 pounds of cocaine that was concealed inside a security company's van.
A Sunday police statement says detectives with the Organized Crime and Anti-Corruption Task Force and other agents found the drugs after stopping and searching the vehicle on a main road in the northern parish of St. James.
Authorities are valuing the cache of cocaine at $2.6 million.
Two men have been arrested and were being questioned.
Police declined to name the "prominent security company" that the two arrested men worked for.
In recent decades, the security industry in Jamaica has grown along with high rates of violent crime. Billboards offering armed guard services are widespread in the capital of Kingston and other major settlements.

I even Googled the topic and the Gleaner and searched for it on the Gleaner website. Nothing came up. This is not a paid assignment, why would I dig any further?

The police say an estimated $50 million worth of cocaine was seized during an operation by members of the Transnational Crime and Narcotics Division and the Contraband Enforcement Team of the Jamaica Customs Agency at the Kingston Container Terminal in Newport West, Kingston this morning.

No one was arrested in connection with the seizure.

It is reported that about 1:30 a.m., during security checks, a 40-foot container was searched and two bags containing cocaine weighing approximately 43.9 kilograms were found.

The security forces have made yet another major drug bust.

The Police say during separate operations yesterday they seized a total of approximately 100lbs of ganja and approximately 25lbs of cocaine.

They say in the first incident a team from the Transnational Crime and Narcotics Division and the Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard were on operation when a metal container attached to the hull of a vessel off the coast of Rockfort, Kingston was spotted.

The container was seized and the weed was found concealed in a section of the container.

A team comprising the Transnational Crime and Narcotics Division and Custom's Contraband Enforcement Team were making security checks when they discovered a knapsack inside a container.

It was searched and 25lbs of cocaine was found inside.





No one was arrested in connection to both finds, but the police say investigations are ongoing.
