Six Jamaicans have received top scholarship awards offered under the European Union's (EU) Erasmus Mundus programme. This is the highest number of recipients under the programme since its inception in 2004. The awardees and their academic pursuits are:
Kadian Alicia Davis, Doctoral Candidate, Eindhoven University ofTechnology in The Netherlands.
Allison Anthonette Pearce, MSc Ecodhydrology, University of Lodz, Poland.
Shaneil Stewart, MA in Advanced Development in Social Work, University of Lincoln, UK.
Channelle Kerry-Ann Ferron, MA Learning and Teaching of Spanish in multilingual contexts,
Univesrdad de Deusto, Spain.
Marshalee Jones, European Master in Social Work with Families and Children, University Institute of Lisbon, Portugal.
Jason Holness, MSc in Global Political Studies, Malmo Univer-sity in Sweden.
The scholarships, which will take effect between August and September, will cover monthly allowances, tuition, registration costs and insurance costs. The six recipients for 2013 bring the total number of awardees under the Erasmus Mundus scholarship programme from Jamaica over the years to 19.
Erasmus Mundus, the EU's only scholarship programme, was expanded in 2004 to include non-European residents and is open to graduate students and institutions across the globe. It operates under three main components, with the objective of assisting individual students, tertiaryinstitutions and organisations active in the field of higher education. In relation to students, the main objective is to promote accessibility to Europe's top universities and help improve the career prospects of students by enabling them to study abroad at top-class institutions. The programme also helps to promote intercultural understanding.
Urged to return home
Minister of Education Ronald Thwaites, in congratulating the recipients, said the Erasmus Mundus programme could be described as the equivalent of the Rhodes Scholarship. He encouraged the recipients to return after their studies and contribute to the building of Jamaica. "This programme opens the broader federalist character of Europe to each of you. The fear is that you will be beguiled by the European culture and not want to return, but truly, what we need is the breadth of vision and experience you will garner to add to the expertise and knowledge needed for the further growth and development of this country."
Meanwhile, head of the delegation of the European Union in Jamaica, Ambassador Paola Amadei, pointed out that with no limitation on the number of recipients who could be awarded each year under the programme, many more Jamaicans could benefit. "It is my hope that in the 2014 cycle there will be an even larger cohort of scholars from Jamaica, and we hope, for our part at the delegation of the EU in Jamaica, to partner with stakeholders in education to bring greater awareness of the opportunities that exist through Erasmus Mundus."
