‘We’re hanging on by a thread’: Ford warns residents over power as Toronto assesses damage

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford applauded officials for a “satisfactory” response to one of the worst storms in the city’s history, but pleaded with citizens Tuesday to conserve power because the hydro system is “hanging on by a thread right now.”
“Last night was unprecedented.

There were some severe cases [of flooding],” Ford said late Tuesday morning, before praising city officials and citizens for their actions Monday. “Toronto has perservered, we have weathered the storm.”
Ford called for a “complete review” of how the city handles emergency situations, saying some areas of Monday’s storm response needed improvement.
The mayor said he would be touring some of the hardest hit areas Tuesday. Ford said he spent much of Monday night in his SUV with his children, driving around to help neighbours, because he did not have power at his west-end home.
The city slowly came back online Tuesday morning with minimal road closures, most of the subway system working and power nearly restored.
City crews worked through the night with Toronto Hydro and the TTC “to manage impacts to residents and restore services to residents as quickly as possible,” the city said in a statement released Tuesday morning.
There was no indication early Tuesday of the damage done by the storm but the City said there were over a 1,000 calls to 311 due to basement floods.
Subway service was still out on the Bloor-Danforth subway line from Jane to Kipling stations, but the transit system was otherwise restored to normal, although residents faced a slower-than-average commute.
TTC CEO Andy Byford lauded his staff for their “Herculean” efforts in getting transit riders home safely as the deluge brought citywide service to a halt.
“We have done much preparation in regard to these events,” city manager Joe Pennachetti said, noting the state of the city this morning is a testament to that. “The city is up and running.”
TTC chair Karen Stintz told CP24 personnel did an “outstanding job” getting passengers off the subways and onto shuttle buses.
