It boggles my mind how people fret over the killing of Martin because someone of a different race killed him, but they remain silent as black youths are slaughtered by other black youths on a daily basis in the big cities in the USA.

Why the double standard? DEAD IS DEAD...Cases like George Zimmerman and Travon Martin are very few and far between compared with the killings in cities like Chicago for example where in 2012 there were over 500 murders. And that is just one city in the USA. If 500 people died in one year in Chicago by an uncontrolled disease the panic would be widespread, and the CDC would be called in and all hell would be breaking loose to stop it...but since it's just black on black murders no one seems the least bit interested, including black people...but the ZIMMERMAN CASE?!?!

And yes, very much agree with you on the media.

No, I'm not saying level playing field, but I am saying that middle class white america does not have controll of this so called field. We are just trying to get along in life as are black people. It's the ruling elite that have controll over all of us.

It boggles your mind because you wish to ignore history...black on black crime is more often than not motivated by circumstances of poverty and desperation. Crimes based on stereotypes of race has a far wider implication.

Has this made people more aware of the racial injistices that still very much are part of daily life or has it made people jaded becuase they realize that even today, 14+ decades after the abolishon of slavery, there is still very much a feeling that whites and blacks are so far apart that racism itself is (and always will be) as American as baseball and apple pie?

I think this has been a rude awakening for many. Racial divide has always been there but covered up and shoved under the rug (especially in Canada). Every now and then, something happens to yank the rug away and show people exactly where things are at.

Nothing is going to change.

It can only help.....racism thrives when its kept in the dark
Blacks for the most part are under no illusions when it comes to the continued existence of racism. Racism is dying but it is not dead yet....pockets will persist for a long time, but as a social norm it will eventually die.

[Alexander] testified she was trying to leave the residence but could not get the garage door to open. (The Court notes that despite [Alexander's] claim she was in fear for her life at that point and trying to get away from [Gray], she did not leave the house through the back or front doors which were unobstructed. Additionally, the garage door had worked previously and there was no evidence to support her claim.) [Alexander] then retrieved her firearm from the glove box of the vehicle. [Alexander] returned to the kitchen with the firearm in her hand and pointed it in the direction of all three victims. [Gray] put his hands in the air. [Alexander] shot at [Gray], barely missing his head. The bullet traveled through the kitchen wall and into the ceiling in the living room. The victims fled the residence and immediately called 911. [Alexander] stayed in the marital home and at no point called 911.

The real outrage here is Florida's 10-20-Life mandatory minimum law, which essentially gives prosecutors (like the detestable Angela Corey) power to act as both prosecutor and judge. The "10-20-Life" statutes exclude manslaughter from any minimum sentencing requirements, Assistant State Attorney Mark Caliel confirmed. That means if Alexander had actually killed her husband or one of his sons and been found guilty of manslaughter, she could have instead gotten as little as time served. Caliel said manslaughter should be added into the statutes.
Since Florida has tied firearms to minimum sentencing laws, the real reason Marissa Alexander will sit in a jail cell for the next 20 years is because of gun control legislation, whether the media wants to admit it or not.
