Just for a change of discussion, to broaden the potential interests of this board for lurkers who have not been here long enough to remember the threads I've posted years ago about this...
It's that time of year again, that time of the summer that I used to live the other 50 weeks of the year for, but this year I could not participate, could not "come home" for the two weeks that "home" exists for about 12,000 people across the world. Perhaps next year will be better for me financially, and I will be able to "come home" to < > once again.
I hope you enjoy peeking at "the hobby that will take over your life". The SCA took over the lives of about 100,000 people throughout the world, in only 46 years!
I've been playing in the SCA for 30 years.
We have been termed (by the United States government) as "the largest standing private army in the world". (not joking, it's true) It is true that we play in a world of absolute hierarchy, and we do indeed consider ourselves one family, in every sense of the word "family" - regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, or financial - and/or social - standing. So perhaps the government isn't too far off, since we are a community with a very large 'army' (multiple armies, really) full of royalty, knights and nobles, an average 'common wo/man' soldiers quite skilled at multiple martial arts and who are trained very well together and separately. lol We recreate the middle ages (from the 6th century to the 16th century) - not as they actually were - but as they should have been. We recreate every phase of the middle ages (minus the rotten things such as pestilence & death, true racism and every other 'ism' - meaning no one is better than another except by his/her own skills set(s), poverty with starvation and homelessness and hopelessness, etc. Arts & Sciences (Brewing, Cookery, Armor Making, Textiles and Clothing, Music, Illumination & Calligraphy - these are but a few of the things we recreate...): If it was done in medieval times, we have studied how they did it historically and recreate it now both the same historical ways and new modern ways that have the look/feel/flavors of 'back then'. Martial Arts (fighting hand-to-hand in real armor, as historic infantry and cavalry did back in medieval days; archery; crossbows; cannon and firearms, seige engines of all kinds - ballistas and trebuchets and such) are taught, learned, and honed - both exactly as they did it back when AND with modern period-esque-ness, tournaments (tourneys), etc. If our medieval ancestors did it or made it, so do we. We are scholars who seriously study our various fields of interest and then, implement the knowledge we've acquired!
Are you ready to come with me "FORWARD INTO THE PAST"??
Come on then; let's go...
The first minute and a half of this vid is, IMO, rather stupid... it's what we hear all the time from outsiders about ourselves... but the rest of the vid is VERY GOOD!
For further information about our particular brand of wonderfully great fun insanity:
