Jamaica's Under-20 netballers will be hunting a second victory at the World Youth Netball Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, today when they oppose the hosts at 9:30 a.m. (Jamaica time).
The young Sunshine Girls made a grand start to their campaign yesterday when they demolished Samoa 64-20.
The Under-20 girls, who are hoping to at least retain the bronze medal they won at the last championships in 2009, made light work of their opponents as they led 18-3 at the end of the first quarter and 36-13 at half-time.
Coach Oberon Pitterson-Nattie made a number of changes to her team at the start of the third period, but they still managed to outscore Samoa 16-5 to take a 52-15 lead at the end of the period. Shantal Slater led the way for the Jamaicans with 39 goals from 48 attempts.
She received good support from Thristina Harwood (13 from 16 attempts), Simone Gordon (six from 11) and Shanice Beckford (six from 10).
Team manager Arlene Findlay said they are all pleased with the team's performance and everyone is looking forward to today's game against Scotland.
"I think that the girls did fairly well," said Findlay. "I think that they started a bit flat, but I guess you could attribute that to nerves, but they picked up as the game progressed and the scoring also picked up," she said.
Findlay added they also used yesterday's match to give a number of their bench players an opportunity to get some playing time on court.
"We brought in the young 16-year-old Simone Gordon and it took a while for her to adjust, but she got into her rhythm and we are happy for that," Findlay said.
"We hoped that having got over the starting jitters, they will settle into a better rhythm than we saw today (Friday)," she said.
Looking ahead to today's game against the hosts, Findlay said: "Scotland will have their home crowd behind them cheering but our girls will go out and give a good account of themselves."

GLASGOW, Scotland (CMC):Three Caribbean countries have advanced to the quarter-final stage of the World Youth Netball Championships.
Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago have already secured places in the round of eight after playing four matches since the start of the tournament at the Emirates Arena.
Jamaica remain the only undefeated Caribbean team in the tournament. They notched up win number four defeating Wales 72-49 to top Pool C with eight points.
The victory has earned the Jamaicans a quarter-final spot against the second-place team in Pool B, Trinidad & Tobago.
Barbados assured themselves of a spot after defeating Papua New Guinea 45-35 and following victories over Singapore, Republic of Ireland and a loss to England.
Trinidad & Tobago confirmed their place with a 56-36 victory over Northern Ireland.
The victory was T&T's third in as many preliminary-round matches after they whipped Bermuda 47-31 and ran past Malta for a 69-32 triumph a day later.
However, the Trinidadians went down to New Zealand 77-16 in their fourth match yesterday.
