SOME of the island's brightest young stars in sports will soon be wearing the vibrant red colour of the University
of the West Indies (UWI) Mona, as the institution has released the names of the over 30 students who have been awarded sports scholarships for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Jamaica's first World Junior and World Youth discus champion Frederick Dacres joins the UWI Pelicans, along with national junior sprinter Odail Todd, formerly of Green Island High School in Hanover.
The former Calabar standout Dacres, who won two gold medals at the World Junior Championships in 2012 and 2011, explained his reason for selecting UWI, Mona, despite having received a number of invitations from other institutions.
"I got a lot of offers from a number of North American colleges, but I chose UWI, Mona, because I don't really plan on leaving Jamaica. I was supposed to leave but decided to stay. I have grown and developed my skills here and I think it is the best option for me," Dacres said.
He went on to add that he was eager to take advantage of the educational aspect of the scholarship immensely. "I am really looking forward to both getting a degree and making my name in track and field, so that I can make a living from doing what I love."
Director of sports at UWI, Mona, Dalton Myers, highlighted the fact that the university has made constant improvement over the years, remaining one of the top options for study. "UWI Mona has focused and will always focus on developing our facilities and programmes. In this way we make available local opportunities and offerings comparable to those available at institutions outside of Jamaica, as more and more students realise the benefits of studying at home," Myers said.
Other track and field athletes who will be traversing the corridors of the UWI, Mona Campus are Deandra Whitehorne, Matthew Campbell, Opal James, Rhajel Brown, Jodean Williams, Mellisa Williams, top female junior sprinter Shenell Francis, as well as high jumpers John Phillips, Jelani Bogle and long distance runner Martin Kennedy.
Ten sports scholarships were also awarded to footballers, with former Wolmer's Boys' goalkeeper Amal Knight leading a contingent which also includes Taniel McKenzie, Davian Montaque, Shamal Thomas, Mitch Wright, Jerondy Henry, Daryl Denny, and females Samantha Watson, Alicia Richard, and Trudi-Ann Young.
The UWI netball programme will also be strengthened with the acquisition of Terry Ann Jones and national Under-21 Sunshine girl Antoinette Stone. Basketballers Kedar Clarke and Damion Johnson will also take up sports scholarships, along with volleyballers Solene Walker and Wolmer's Girls stand-out
Vanessa Jones.
Rounding out the 31 student scholars are cricketers O'shane Walters, former Jamaican Under-19 representative, James McDonald and Amanjah Morris.
Myers is expecting another great year for sports at the university, and spoke highly of the variety of sporting disciplines being attended to.
"Our recruitment has realised outstanding talent in these new scholars. This year's sports scholarship programme includes a wider pool of recipients as it relates to the six sporting disciplines, netball, track and field, football, volleyball, basketball and cricket," Myers said.

one is a doctor was in Jamaica last year working at a hospital in Spanish town on some sort of charity... the other Inger an olympian with the yankis ... I think she got caught up in some doping thing... won a gold in the 200 at Seville world champpionship..

Dat trousers nuh look too tight to me....

Is it me or is there always an obbesions about uniforms in Jamaica ? youths will alway push gainst dem sor5t of rules...

when wi was youtit was locks, bell foot and then speng pants.. Back in that days man and man would get im trousers built by the local tailor and could create style....

The Talibanization of Jamaica continues. It seems there were more freedom in the 50s, 60s, 70s than now. Speng Pants were tight, then bell-bottoms in the 70s. The 80s was the end of the great fashions. Then dark ages of the 90s. No the Fashion and individual treatments are coming forward but it seems the schools are on the forefront of the move to cutail any kind of individual liberties.

Just over 40 per cent of the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT)students placed at Tarrant High School by the education ministry's placement mechanism have been pulled by their parents.
Esther Tyson, the educator called out of retirement to steady the shaky Tarrant High School ship, told The Sunday Gleaner that 240 students were placed at the school after the recently concluded GSAT, but 100 of them have not turned up.
"A number of students have transferred to other schools. That's not usually the case. Normally, about 300 students are trying to come in," said Tyson, who was contacted in late August by the education ministry's director for Region One, the zone in which the school falls, and asked to temporarily take over the reins at the institution.
School will rise up
The former Ardenne High School principal, who retired in 2011 after spending 11 years on Ardenne Road, urged parents to send their children to the school.
"Teaching and learning is taking place at Tarrant in spite of the challenges we have with the infrastructure. Parents shouldn't be reluctant to send their children. There is a clear structure to supervise teaching and learning. There are systems in place for teaching and learning. What I'm concerned about is the support for those structures like the infrastructure," said Tyson.
She continued: "I think the school will rise up even further as we give them the necessary tools to enhance teaching and learning. There are committedteachers who are going beyond the call of duty to add value to the students."
The school's physical plant is in bad shape. However, The Sunday Gleanerwas unable to ascertain whether there was a correlation between the poor state of Tarrant's infrastructure and the high number of grade-seven students withdrawn by their parents.
After speaking with the newspaper, Tyson led a contingent from Tarrant to meet with Minister of Finance Dr Peter Phillips, who is the member of parliament for the East Central St Andrew, the constituency in which the school is located.
She said she would be appealing to the minister for, among other things, help to fix the roof that prevents the grade-11 classes from functioning when it rains. The estimate is $1 million.
Tyson also appealed to corporate Jamaica to come on board and help a school that is doing all that it can with the limited resources provided to it.
"We are working to effect change and we want others to come on board - the Ministry of Education's procurement unit, the private sector organisations that can help us with furniture and computers, because most of the computers in the lab are not working," she said.
A visit to one of the school's computer labs confirmed this. The teacher had 28 students and only six working computers. The lab roof also leaks and is the reason some of the computers need repairing.
"You have to rotate them. It's very difficult. The students don't get enough practice. It's frustrating. The grade-11 students are way behind and they haven't mastered things they should have already mastered," said Nadine Warner, who teaches electronic document preparation and management.
Lorna Gardner, the school's only vice-principal, said the institution desperately needs computers.
"It's for the nation's children," Tyson pleaded. The seasoned educator hopes to achieve quite a bit in the one term she has at Tarrant. She hopes to help restore staff morale by motivating "teachers to believe again in the vision of Tarrant as a school of choice".
Not habitable for teaching
In addition, Tyson said she hopes to assist the school in obtaining basic furniture, acquire lighting fixtures, and effecting needed repairs to the leaky roofs that often disrupt classes.
"It is not the best. We need to upgrade the infrastructure because it is not habitable for teaching and learning right now. When it rains all of the grade-11 classes (are affected). The have to put the students in a corner," she revealed.
The vice-principal pointed out that one of the classrooms that leak has "to be abandoned" whenever it rains.
Both educators lamented that, based on the ministry's own standard - one vice-principal per 600 students - the school should have a second vice-principal, but after years of lobbying that assignment has not taken place.
Last year, the National Education Inspectorate gave the school a satisfactory grade.

There Is No Failing School

THE EDITOR, Sir:
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the National Education Inspectorate ranking of schools across the island.
When you publicly categorise schools as failing or their performance as unsatisfactory, you only place those institutions in a negative light. There is a failing stigma attached to those schools and, as a result, many children cry and parents seek transfers after the Grade Six Achievement Test results are released and children are placed in those 'failing' schools.
I am in total agreement with the Minister of Education when he told children and parents to be proud of the schools they gain passes for and that they should work hard to raise the standard of those institutions, but the children won't be happy attending a school that is always branded as failing.
Although students and teachers are responsible for teaching and learning, the Ministry of Education is responsible for providing whatever is necessary for the students and teachers to function effectively. If you should visit one of the schools that are ranked failing/unsatisfactory, you will notice that the environment is not up to standard. The Ministry of Education should, however, seek to improve the conditions in which these students learn so that will make them more comfortable and the environment more suitable for learning.
The ministry is now taking schools off the shift system and this move can also help students to perform better. One school in St Ann was ranked as a failing school. It was taken off the shift system last year and is now performing at an accepted level.
Students are responsible for their actions and they should try their utmost to get an education. Ranking schools is certainly not the very best idea: improve the facilities and the performances will be improved.
