Another Tourettes Thread

So you take your family to the movies. You pay approx. $100 for tickets, popcorn, pop (soda), candy etc... and you all settle in to enjoy the film. The movie starts and so does an episode of Tourettes by a fellow movie watcher.

What happens if the movie you want to see is only playing in that one theatre and it is impossible to listen to and enjoy the film with the individual being so distracting.

What would you do? Complain to management to have the Tourettes sufferer removed? Leave and watch another movie you really didn't want to see? Ask for your money back? Sit through the movie in frustration?

Inform management immediately of the problem, i.e. within the first 20 minutes of the film and request vouchers for another showing.

Don't ask for the person to be removed because a) they cannot control themselves b) they have a right to see the movie too c) management might get sued for discrimination, so may not comply with that kind of request and d) even if you manage to get the person removed, you will still have missed much of the movie anyway, so not worth the hassle.

to me it would be similar to somebody having a coughing fit in the movie. i would hope that they peron is sensitive enough to excuse himself.

having only had minor exposure to the syndrome i don't know if there are cases severe enough to totally disrupt a movie

They were discussing this situation on the radio on my way to work this morning. It reminded me of Tropi's thread a couple of weeks ago.

Personally, if it was too distracting for me to watch the film i would bring it to the attention of management and ask for my money back, including the money i paid for snacks.

they asked the guy to leave and offered a private screening which he and his mother wouldn't accept. :strange:

reminds me of one time as a ute i went to movie in Jamaica...we used to jus go saturday matinee widout even checkin what was showing. so it was some terrible movie ..a swedish foreign film or something. ... so a few minutes in the crowd starts booing and this guy gets up ans somehow finds this big piece of board and start parading in front of the screen trying to block it shouting "manega wi want wi money back"

Oh man, what have I started. Tourette's Syndrome is not all that common so it surprises me that so many people on here have run into people with Tourette's Syndrome.

Tourette syndrome occurs in 3 out of every 1,000 school-aged chidren, and is more than twice as common in white kids as in blacks or Hispanics, according to the largest U.S. study to estimate how many have the disorder.

Tourette's - known for its physical tics and, in some cases, shouted obscenities - has long been considered a rare condition. The new number means it's more common than some past estimates, but confirms that it's far less common than other neurological conditions like autism or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Tourette's is characterized by involuntary, sudden and repetitive movements. They may be as mild as blinking, nose twitching or grimacing, or severe as head jerking or other motions that cause chronic pain or injury. Some also have vocal tics that range from grunting and throat-clearing to barking and swearing.
