I believe Jamaican culture is popular. The Marley influence has romanticized Jamaican culture, esp. Rasta and ganja. I am constantly explaining to my students that most Jamaicans are not Rasta and not all Jamaicans smoke ganja, nor is it legal.

The image of the musical rebel is destructive as it belies a truth.... Jamaicans who atain adult hood in Jamaica are tough....from my persective it always surprises people how driven i am despite the slow speaking style.....

I agree that Jamaica has a powerful image in Africa.....It never fails to amaze me when they see us as cousins not brothers.... I also note that we have greater affinity than black yankis... well i do... i can sit will elders and discuss yams....

The Jamaican culture came under great ctitisism by Garvey..... He left Jamaica for england after his expulsion from the us and he was clear the caustrophobic nature of the culture.. That was then... I think Garvey would have understood a bit of the culture, the pride.....and even the way we see ethnicity..... but i suspect he would be against alot of what passes as music, language and decorum now.....
