Just because someone told us things as children, does not mean that we have to have those mandates affect us in our lives as adults. Then, there are possible psychological/psychiatric reasons for homophobia. Some have theorized that it is a construct of 'being in the closet' themselves.

I somewhat understand the homophobia of Jamaica. There is the Western version, which inhabits the tourist areas, and there is the roots version. I was in a non-touristy area of Jamaica, playing dominos outside of a bar in the middle of a little lane, and we were being observed by a bunch of local teens. Standing out because of his size and height was an obviously gay youth. His peers seemed to accept him whole-heartedly, and laughed and joked with all of us as the evening wore on. In the microcosm of his world, he was an accepted member of the community. As the lines between the areas have narrowed, the Western version and the prejudice it inspires, have exhibited in the appearance of violence inflicted on the LGBT community.

Another thing about Jamaica. A question. Isn't this anti-homosexual behavior taught in the churches/homes? Where exactly do you think Jamaicans got this mind-set/teaching?
