While The World Watched Grammys; US Bombs Somalia

While The Majority of Americans and much of the world watched the Grammys, the United States had other plans in mind. The U.S. carried out a confirmed airstrike on a militant leader with ties to al-Qaeda and al-Shabeeb.

According to Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity, an official explained the U.S. did in fact carry out an airstrike on a known militant leader with connections to al-Qaeda, and al-Shabeeb, but did not give a name of the suspect.

Another Official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said the strike took place in Southern Somalia, but declined to say if it was successful or not, but did clarify it was in a remote area near Barawe, Somalia.

This past October, an American commando team led an attack that failed on the Barawe military stronghold, while they were looking for a militant known as Ikrima.

Ikrama, has been blamed for plotting and executing numerous attacks on Kenya, but after a gun battle US forces pulled out without his capture.

If you remember, the al-Shabeeb rebels shocked the world with their devastating attack on a mall in Nairobi back in September, killing 67 people, as they intend to impose a strict doctrine of Sharia Law in Somalia.

A US missile strike in southern Somalia on Sunday killed a senior commander in the al-Qaida-linked militant group al-Shabaab who had masterminded suicide attacks, two Somali security officials have said.
The intelligence sources and a Somali government spokesman named the target as Ahmed Mohamed Amey, a chemicals expert also known as Isku Dhuuq.
On Sunday a US official said the missile strike occurred in a remote area near Barawe, a coastal rebel enclave that was the site of a failed raid by American commandos in October targeting a militant known as Ikrima. It was not clear whether the missile was launched from a drone.
The security sources said Amey was close to al-Shabaab's leader, Ahmed Abdi Godane, who since taking charge in 2008 has restyled the group as a global player in the al-Qaida franchise. In September the group killed at least 67 people in an attack on a Kenyan shopping mall.
One of the officials, a former Islamist militant who defected in 2009, said Amey advised Godane on the operations of al-Shabaab's Amniyat "secret service", an elite unit blamed for suicide attacks in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
"He was a good friend of Godane and the two were always on good terms," said the intelligence official, who identified himself as Hussein. "He was the adviser of al-Shabaab leader Godane on matters regarding the Amniyat and masterminding suicide bomb attacks."
The second intelligence source said Amey became an adviser to Godane, who hails from the same Dir clan, after another of the leader's top lieutenants, known as al-Afghani, was killed last year.
A Somali government spokesman described Amey as a "top leader of al-Shabaab". A spokesman for the US embassy to Somalia, which is based in the Kenyan capital, could not be reached.
Both Somali intelligence officials said Amey was killed alongside his driver on Sunday.
An offensive by African Union troops has driven al-Shabaab from southern Somalia's major towns but the militants still control large rural areas and remain the biggest security threat in east Africa, diplomats and analysts say.
Late last year the US military deepened its involvement in Somalia, sending a handful of officers to Mogadishu to advise and support African Union and Somali forces.
