Ban on all jet ski activities in Negril following fatal crash

The Maritime Authority of Jamaica has imposed a temporary ban on all jet ski activities in Negirl, Westmoreland.
This is to facilitate its investigation into the death of an American tourist following a jet ski crash in the area. The ban also comes as tourism interests voice concern about the dangers posed by watercraft.
Director General of the Maritime Authority, Rear Admiral Peter Brady states that the agency is usig its powers under the Shipping Act.
Fifty three year old Tomas Torres of Las Vegas died on Tuesday after being hit by a jet ski while swimming at a beach at a resort in Negril.

I know that the tourist board is not keen on the jet skis at all. I have had many discussions with them about this very topic. I could not understand how someone could get hurt on a jet ski but apparently the tourist booze it up, go on the jetskis and drive like they are 3/4 mad. Most of the operators are not licensed.

The rumour is that there was a video posted on You Tube, which has now been removed, of two on duty police officers standing around offering no assistance to the injured man. I really hope that is all it is, a rumour!

The tourist board has been concerned about this for a LONG time. I have had numerous discussions with them when trying to source licensed operators. The tourist board is extremely unhappy due to the behaviour of the tourists and the accidents. There have been others. Few hit headlines.

Why they insist on drinking booze and then boarding a jetski is beyond me. Not usre if this is what happened in thsi case. The issue is the same with the motorcycle rentals. It is also hard to find licensed motorcycle operators.

yes they did the immediate response was the suspend the importation of any new jet skis and a clamp down on illegal operators while a review was done
