we have had 3 singling out in the playground when a group did the same thing

we have a list a mile long of other things that she has been picked on

i have casually mentioned to the principal there is a conflict hence why I am writing in that recess cannot be taken away in her 504.

now my kid is no angel but it is due to the medication she on and until the transition to the new medication is complete we have to be more positive encouragement

When the substitute was there for a month, there were NO issues at all ... teacher comes back and is all this likkle ish soooo what is the difference

Yes rich that is what she did.. she put everything back in the ziploc bag and took it home

fi Kia patience when dealing with this mad person ... my bro-in-law make a teacher cry last week fi the same singling out thing last week. I think she is due a visit. Yes I will encourage you to have her take the environmentally friendly spoon to school and put it in her bag when she is done with it (Adale school literally begging ppl to use reuseable things) but since there are other issues which might not have such a simple solution she needs to know that you are aware of her trifling ways and will not tolerate it.

We talk against bullying but when teacher bullying student it is sad.

what has the principal said about your concerns ? Can you switch teachers/homeroom ?

Maybe another meeting with the principal and mek him/her know that you believe this is bullying. All this pick picking on cannot be good for the child.

If all else fails, legal action ?? While you homeschool ??

i think you have to be careful on which battles you choose to fight with this teacher. If she thinks you are making things difficult for her she might turn around and make things difficult for your child. Unless you have a out option you have to work with her as best you can. try deal with the issues without escalating.

the profession calls that "worse" behavior: Sanitized Treatment

i never condone an adult doing things to children, but I think a lot of times parents dont realize that they (in defending/doing right by/speaking for) their children end up making things more difficult for their kids when they go to school guns blazing/ready for a fight. While unprofessional teachers will outright be mean to a kids sometimes (calling it discipline ) ....kids almost always prefer that to a teacher that treats them "more sanitized" than the rest of the class. Kids know/recognize it AND hate it, but usually cant explain that treatment (which is far worse IMO) to a parent and then wish they never said anything in the first place.

Kia I hope you try to work with these people, especially of there are no other options.

Rich & HIELPEE I have not confronted the teacher with any of this yet because I am concerned about backlash against girlkia.

This teacher has a reputation of picking on one or two children the entire year. It is not uncommon in the past 4 years (based from the time boykia was in the school and now) where 5 or 6 children were transferred from her class. I have yet to hear a child or parent say they 'like' the teacher. Some parents have said they like how she is strict and I have no problem with that. I like firm teachers as well but not when they are nasty to the kids.

e.g. In the beginning of the year, the teacher assigned odd or even math problems for homework. The sheet had 10 problems. Kids wanting to show they know the work did all the problems. All kids who did the extra work had 'Why don't you listen to the instructions?' written on their paper and all the extra work marked wrong. What does that teach a 10 year old? Do not go above & beyond what is expected of you?

An option is to move girlkia to the other 5th grade group. MrKia and I have been of the position that in life you will have all kinds of teachers and difficult people to work with so better you learn now how to deal with them. We give girlkia strategies so as not to negatively gain this teachers attention. However what we are seeing now is girlkia coming home stressed and now am questioning if it is even worth to even continue having her in class with this teacher. Fortunately the language arts teacher is pleasant and girlkia has a reprieve during the day (even though the language arts teacher writes with poor grammar - see posts above )

Fortunately starting in middle school, kids only have teachers for one class so even if they do not like the teacher, they only suffer through for one period a day.

I see BB suffer thru with a teacher like this- not that she was necessarily picking on him, but she was an older lady with obviously just girl children and she seemed irritated by the "extra work" that seem to come with younger boys (don't really like to sit still for too long etc )....out of all of BB's teachers...she is the only one that EVER had a negative comment. Looking back i wish i had been more proactive because the boy suffer thru the year,.and lost 10 pounds. At the time I thought it was due to the scooter accident and subsequent stomach cramps etc, but a week after summer holiday, the stomach cramps went away and he could eat normally. On the flip side he got all A's despite missing a ton of school because of all the doctor appointments. So she was a good teacher in a way.

I don't know what to say....cause if the principal give u a fight to move her out of the class, the teacher might start pick more on girlkia......but what is the alternative?

fi ceabee I remember that year .

Alternative is to move her to the other class as mi did state 6-7 students move yearly... but will discuss more with MrKia to make us both on board.

Funny thing I spoke with a friend of mine who is a teacher and she said confront her and it will stop.. Parent Teacher conferences coming up in a few weeks. I have a call into girlkia behavioral therapist to discuss the issue and would like her input (as the therapist has had experience in dealing with kids who had to deal with this particular teacher too ) With the info you all have shared , plus the therapist, plus what mrKia & I want, I think we may end up with a plan to do what is right for girlkia

I agree that NOTHING (at all) is wrong with meeting with the teacher, Gen. Actually, I think "meeting" with her is actually a great idea, if Kia hasn't already done so.

However, I will reiterate my original comments, "meetings" with the intent on confronting (Kia's words), drapsing up, dressing up/down and them kinna things EVEN WHEN one is doing only what one is naturally inclined to do in the protection/defending of their children..isn't always the best approach. In my experience, meetings with Principals, Note writing and message sending usually only works to embolden a teacher to continue the bad (to be read: unprofessional) behavior. Or, like Rich and I said make things worse... Kia has said herself...this teacher has been there how long? Doing the same kinna things, no?

In my tenure, I will not say that parents had never "addressed" me in a manner that I didnt appreciate (meetings with the principal, sending messages via their kids, waiting until they were beyond concerned [over dumb -ish] and then "letting me have it", requested their kids be removed from my class...which they are totally free to do), but in the end, after such instances I always found it "easier" to treat the child in a sanitized manner. And in <span style="font-weight: bold">every single</span> case...it has ended up being worse for the kid. Which was NEVER my intentions, but it was just easier, so that I could concentrate on the job of teaching my class and the working with other kids. The kids then said...the teacher is now dealing with me in this manner if FAR WORSE than before. Parents just knew kids had stopped coming home complaining, but the kids still came to school everyday and "the issue" wasnt gone away...kid eventually internalized the WRONG message: "Dont communicate about school with my parents because the outcome is worse."

In instances where parents have a "reputation" and have had the "reputation" for a long time...kids go from class to class/grade to grade/school cluster to school cluster and know teachers treat them "differently", but because the teacher isnt "yelling, singling out, etc...they just "let it go/deal with it" and parents think all is well at school...when in reality it is not.

Anyhew...Kia will make the correct decision for GirlKia... at least mi a she will.

she says they were doing math and she got everything correct. The teacher looked at her and mouthed the words good jobs and a secret thumbs up.
