yeah true.

HR "stuff" is in my job description to a certain extent but for me, I am used to dealing with the basics and then having an HR dept to deal with the rest.

But I am going to take some cues from you and a few other posters and redefine some aspects of her job. I cannot expect an Office Manager level of responsiblity from her, so until she is replaced I have to contain some of the damage she does.

Now you're talking. The name of the game is damage control and CYJ......cover your JOB. If you keep trying to improve her performance, she will engage in even MORE manipulative practices as a survival strategy. The one I had eventually had to be called into a meeting with the boss. I made it absolutely clear what I would and would not tolerate. Of course, this was LONG before I realized she had psychiatric problems.

As fi Miss Ting, set her up for success. Identify what she is capable of doing and take everything else away from her. One option I tried that worked very nicely was that we hired a couple of co-op students from a local community college. Yup we had 2 at one time. They weren't paid but they did pick up valuable experience for their resumes. Eventually, full time positions did become available and they were both hired by other departments. We replaced 1 co-op with a paid summer student who joined us for 2 summers. It really helped.
