That's what I was thinking. Mainstream america often tries to say things could be 'cultural' when it comes to certain things. I hear that being used about Asians alot! I don't think he was saying anything really bad.

I think every Jamaican I know, including myself has uttered the &quot;I am not here to make friends&quot; mantra and while that may be true, there is a difference in not seeking friendships and being unfriendly.

They tell me I am quiet becuase I probably won't be the one approaching them BUT if they chit chat with me I chit chat with them, it doesn't cost me anything to be friendly. One of my coworker is battling cancer right now, I am not in there everyday asking her how she is doing or going by her house etc. but once a week I make it a point to do stop by her office and ask how she is doing, anything I can do to help etc. I don't think the workplace should be devoid of normal social interactions. People will have events in their lives that they will always want to share with others, I just listen and offer the appropriate response.

One of the main problems in my work environment (other than all the friends of friends and relatives and butt kissers) is that the 'group' does not know the difference between being 'engaging' and 'social'.


It is bad enough I am forced to work with many of these people, I certainly have no desire to go out weekly for drinks, strip clubs, etc. For many of them, it appears they have no friends other than the ones they have at work, and for others... within two weeks of employment some of them find love!

I will participate in certain pools/collections, but not anything I feel is a popularity or kissup type of thing.

Serious - yes (but should not be a bad thing), I too am serious about doing my job well -not there to play (and trust me, my workplace is like a junior kindergarten). Unfortunately, 'management' doesn't agree, because they play the same playground games.


Unapproachable - not really, most Jamaicans I know are very approachable, however, there is a time and place for everything and they normally maintain worktime for work, and playtime for breaks or after hours -they know how to distinguish and separate the two.

It won't get any easier but there comes a time when each person have to make their own decison one which to choose - health or wealth? Only they can decide.

Well this is such a good thought but personally I would not leave unless I feel ready to leave and if the next job not going to be worth it the bills still gotta be paid and I'm not sure they are gonna like me anyway so until I find something else that I am comfortable moving for then I would be staying put.

I have no prob eating my lunch by myself and not socializing with my coworkers but then I don't really care if they like me are not as long as them no interfere with me doing my job. My friends are outside my job ...dont even member the people mi work with till mi ketch deh next morning.

They would never know what I really think about
them, but iwould stay ther and play the fgool and wear down every single one and become the boss eventually. But that is me. I train my kids tyo do that to and they love it. Both of them hav efun calling me and discuss their experience and hav eus working out every step to use to overcime them. Nobody has any right to use negative experiences to force others to leave. the place will become a mess because that will become the nature of the place.
they play the same game with every good person that comes by,and thechildren will be the one that suffer as a result..

jaded, your question is a fair one. truthfully, i will admit that i am one of those people that &quot;stays to themselves&quot;. i dont go in the lounge, i dont go out to happy hour, i am usually the last (i mean very last) to hear gossip. i dont do birthday pools, secret pal, etc. i do my job and do my job well. i say good morning and good night. when i am asked to collaborate on particular projects, i do. when i am asked to do workshopss, etc. i do. i just dont IM, email, or facebook with any of them.

earlier in the school year, i had a serious issue with some of them, where they were talking about me (and my &quot;lifestyle&quot to the point that the children went home and told their parents. it was rectified sort of...but i am very leary of them now. i am not rude, i engage them when they engage me.

i dont look to find them though.
