With a good lawyer the charges could be dropped or significantly reduced and record expunged or sealed.

Like Kia said- a good lawyer and/or drug court (if in her city/jurisdiction) should clear up the charges and his record. Mom can look at this as her last payment.

There should be ground rules and a timeline for leaving when he's released back to her one room apartment.

Yep, shi get a district attorney who advised her and went with her to di court house and dem lower di charge to a Misdemeanor and him haffi do community service for 5 days (cleaning up a park inna Harlem).

What he bawling bout? He sad because the people who he thought were his friends deserted him? He sad because he broke and broke back? I know this lil 5 days of sweeping up is not it when it could have been so much worse if his mom had not stepped in.

I do believe he needs counseling of some sort but it's time to lay down the law.

My brother's wife left him and he went through what I would call a period of depression. He moved from Texas to Georgia and lived with me a year without contributing one penny to the household for any reason not for so much as his own toiletries.

Among other things, I put up with hizzoes coming in and out at all hours, but I finally said "enough". You have a degree that mommie and daddy paid for. You are capable of getting a good job. You have 6 weeks left to pull yourself together. If not, then when our parents come for Thanksgiving they are going to take you home with them.

Two weeks later, he had an apartment.

Your friend was is the enabler. Time for some serious (joint) counseling for both of them. Not necessarily for the gay situation, that can be addressed later, she needs to immediately address his dependency on her. She definitely wont be able to solve this one on her own. If she tries she will only end up alienating him even more.

he received one of his many life lessons--the definition of fairweather friends and no matter your particular life experience,cops will judge you based on your colour alone.

Yes he needs to find a job but has he had summer jobs from HS or did his mom support him then too?

Has he made contact and is he involved organizationally with the black ivy league associations? They may offer some guidance for him as well.

If he is not gainfully employed, he can use his time to volunteer to gain some work experience (even if it is not for pay right now) and build up his resume while looking for a paying job.
