You know, I think the 'request' for coffee is more a sexist thing than a racist thing...

I recall working at one place where being the newbie and only female, I'd get asked to make the coffee...

I used to do it, thought nothing of it, I guess cause I was new and had bigger hurdles to overcome...

I am sorry about all of this. Although I am not in corporate America, I can relate to being very frustrated by people who feel they know more than you and are more qualified than you. After I transfered to my current school, it would pain me when I was passed up to teach advanced/college courses.

I would always be told when I asked, "Oh that was decided months ago. Or "So and so was trained way before your got here." I mean I have a BA and 2 Masters degrees and some of these people are barely certified. When offers for opportunities came in I would literally not be given the memo or be told about positions. I eventually began researching myself. I began the networking myself. I began getting trained myself. I would show up at some sessions and would often startle some of them when I'd show up. I'd get, "Oh, ILP...I didnt know you were coming to this conference/training?" Of course they would be embarrassed the entire time.

I know that they consider me a "mad, black, angry, woman". I must admit that it used to bother me. Now that I am older...it doesnt. I could care less. I did receive a little vindication and a hell of a good laugh about two months ago now. I applied for a job in an International Program. The decisions are made in Geneva. It is based primarily on credentials and test scores. When the word came in that I got the job, I heard another teacher in my department say, "How did ILP get the position? I didnt know she was even in the running." I almost PUMS when I heard them reading the press release announcing that I got the job. I heard my Dept. Chair saying, "Damn, ILP makes my credentials look like a degree from the Cracker Jack Box." Now, those that are not still seething and embarrassed that I got the job are actually asking about my qualifications, about my research, and experience. The ones that are actually talking to me are genuinely interested, which has been pretty cool.

I wouldnt let things worry you MarieK. I know it is easier said than done. But if you do let it get to you...you will give yourself gray hair and a heart attack. I know that you are only venting. Do what you can. Accept only what you can live with. Stand firm in what you will not. I am a firm believer in "that which does not kill us only makes us stronger" [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/icon_hug.gif[/img]

Black people built this country. It's a beautiful country and the most wealthy. America is unique and beautiful. Don't let racist whites or anyone else make it color the entire country. At least when it comes to the most important things like keeping a job, getting a good one and so on. Human beings will always try to abuse each other. It's about not being vulnerable to others though. Right now, blacks are vulnerable to whites.

For those who have stawted businesses and are successful maybe you could give idea's so others can atleast get a thinking process going to be self sufficient aswell.

I believe that is the only way we'll be happy and gain respect as sojourners in this foreign land.
