that lawyer is an idiot. You may not be able to get a TRO but you have grounds for the divorce and your divorce isn't going to send him back to jamaica, not liek they are gonna come pick him up the day the decree is signed and ship him home. He has his mother here, she can simply resume his papers.

I think that everyone involved is looking for a reason to hang in there and with that I'm out.

I know it is not going to be an easy road Debs, but please be strong. Everybody will have a different experience and therefore might have a different solution, but only you know when it is right and safe to act, so just please follow your heart and be careful.

some advice

start saving your money - usually single mom's end up living close to poverty - save by cutting back on clothes, food - give up the steak, seafood, chicken chick

get your bills paid down

don't tell him you moving

look for places you can afford - near work - to make the commute easier

remember you don't need his "permission" to get divorced

think about what you are going to tell your son - something simple - like daddy and i are not getting along right now - so mommy is going to have her own house and daddy will have his own house - he is still your daddy

the hardest part is making the decision to move on - sounds like you've done that

believe in yourself and everything will fall in place

i've been handling it alone for 8 years now - and in lots of ways it's better

get him out of the house - even if you have to pick another fight

and you don't have to have a reason to get divorced - you can just file - irreconcilable differences - the domestic violence does not have to come up

call one of those "cheap lawyers" - getting a divorce is just paperwork and typically the paralegals handle it - the lawyer only shows up in court

i got a divorce and child support and HE never stepped his foot into court - he was notified of all hearings

Hi,
If your husband hit you once he will do it again. When people show you their true colors believe them. Your husband is sending a very bad example for your son as to how to treat women, it will do him more harm than good to live full time in that environment. Start making a plan now to get out pack some clothes,important papers for you and your son like birth certificates, passports, ID cards etc. Document in writing, dates, times, circumstances and with pictures everytime he hurts you. If you have a trusted friend or co worker or family member ask to store copies of the documentation of abuse, your identification paperwork and some clothes etc with them. Make extra copies of car keys etc. I am also a nurse so I know how working long hours on your feet makes you tired. Your husband is not working as much out of the house so he should be doing most of the house work cooking, cleaning, laundry etc until he starts to work outside the house as much as you do. Let him do his own laundry just concentrate on you and your sons clothes. If he does not want to eat what you cook then he should look out for himself. Jamaican men often traditionally do not treat women well. You have to establish how you will accept being treated from the start of the relationship. I am Jamaican and I would not be willing to put up with that kind of abuse, that is one reason I am not married to a Jamaican man. However wife beaters occur in all races, nationalities and across all economic classes and professions. Get out now while you can. His family can sponser him, he should have thought about that before he mistreated you. Once he is an American citizen he will probably only treat you worse. You have a valuable career and will be able to support yourself and your son. Call 911 if you need to go to a hospital for medical attention that way the abuse will be documented. It is unbelievable that the police did not respond to you. Marriage is all about compromise he can eat some of your ethnic food if you are willing to make some of his food when you have time. Jamaican food is often more time consuming to prepare. Good luck to you, you deserve better. [email protected]
