kinda sad that chris rock would exploit an extremely loaded subject as hollyweird entertainment...

this proves our insanity & brainwash & i doubt will make many people re-think their position on the african woman & hair...i hope it's done with some taste but i don't like the idea;

we will come out of the theater still thinking we have no choice but to emulate others & dis our own folic attributes...
personally i rue our women's obsession with the straight hair ting but this is not the forum to discuss it honestly...mr chris rock

something like that;
it's like chinese people producing a major hollyweird release about eyelid surgery...or whites about suntanning &amp; collagen injections;
but this is no surprise from the man who gave us &quot;black people versus n---az&quot;

when we get past projecting our hangups for pop consumption &amp; entertainment -then we can truly begin to think as people

i dunno;
maybe on a program like 'like it is' with gil noble -maybe

but i guess i just don't feel like deep down black ppl are ready or willing to attack this subject seriously so i'm disapointed to see it tackled comedically;

it is right in our face but all we get is denials or explanations or jokes from hollyweird as they continue to justify the brainwash of a people

I think you're right about the lack of readiness and willingness to tackle the subject seriously, hence comedy may be the only way to do so.

On the other topic, white people show collagen, et. al. all the time on <span style="font-style: italic">Doctor 90210</span>.

Welllll, sometime ago I had started a thread about animal hair including dog hair that was being sold to be used for &quot;hair weaving&quot;' not to mention the fact that hair from corpses have been sold for the same purpose.

However, that is not the issue, the issue is, why does Chris think there is a need to make a movie about &quot;what black women in particular do with their hair?&quot;

While I don't advocate the use of any chemical, especially one that is toxic, what is the hooplah all about?

Does Chris know that most if not all packaged foods that is being sold in the supermarket contain chemicals in one form of another for preservative...and that can have adverse effects on people?

The horse has already left the barn...hair processing is here to stay, like it or not...<span style="font-weight: bold">so anyone who gets up in arms, and harp the never ending litany about what black women in particular do to their hair is wasting time.</span>..time that could be devoted to teaching black men in particular how to RESPECT their women.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Nota bene: it is not only &quot;BLACK women&quot; who are putting chemicals into their hair to enhance their looks...other races and ethnicity are doing it as well.</span>


Women are seldom satisfied with how they look, and I mean alll women, black women, white women, pink women, purple women, polka dot women, and even green women....feel free to add any that I left out unintentionally.

I remember a Filipino of all ppl, telling me that she straightens her hair for it is too unruly...we won't go into the coloring and highlights that she uses as well...do those contain chemicals, toxic ones at that?

I wonder if Chris asks Rev Al what straightener does he use..

Women, and now the men will go to all lengths to look and therefore <span style="font-weight: bold">feel better</span> about themselves. If hair was a symbol of racial purity and <span style="font-weight: bold">identification</span> I think the first set of people we should check with are the Caucasian and Japanese dreads for starters.

Movie sounds hilarious, will wait for it on DVD.

'black hair' is a misnomer in my opinion...'africoid' hair is more accurate to me; as 'black hair' implies hair that is the color black- event though they are talking about the africoid type hair- kinky, curly, nappy, wooly, fluffy, frizzy, whatever way they describe it, it is the hair of the majority of the african continent as well as certaain pacific islands &amp; places like papua new guinea;

'good' hair or 'pretty' hair is a term that i know of people of african descent use to describe hair that is more textured or looser curls or straight compared to the other extreme of very tightly curled 'pepper-corn' type hair which they consider 'bad' hair...it varies from place to place;

what some in jamaica or america might call 'good' hair, in puerto rico i heard described as 'bad' hair;

so in the end, for me 'good' or 'bad' hair is completely subjective...what someone might consider 'good' hair to me may not be all that 'good';
it is your mentality...i consider whatever hair god gave a person that is healthy to be 'good' hair;

Sisters, Don't Be Held Hostage by 'Good Hair' Ideal

As I laughed, cringed and sighed my way through a recent pre-screening of Chris Rock’s docu-flick, “Good Hair,” I knew that at some point, he was going to go there.

Rock asked Nia Long if she and her glistening, India-imported locks ever went swimming.

The actress copped to having a pool, but said she didn’t swim. Didn’t want to mess up her hair, she said. Ditto for Lauren London, the dimpled beauty of “This Christmas,” fame, and former child star Raven Symone.

Apparently, the only water that these sisters, as well as many of their counterparts outside of Tinseltown, allow to mingle with their woven locks is that which flows into the shampoo bowl. Not that which flows into a pool, or unto a beach, or from their sweat glands.

And that, to me, is one of the real tragedies of our obsession over the pursuit of “good hair.”

I got a chance to see Rock’s movie, which is scheduled for release in October, at the National Association of Black Journalist’s Convention in Tampa, Fla. Without giving away too much of the plot, all I’ll say is that it’s ingenious in how it uses humor to force us to confront some unsettling realities.

Like the fact that Koreans are enriching themselves off struggling black women who spend thousands on weaves that they somehow believe will help them channel the straight-hair, shoulder-length glamour of actresses, supermodels and video vixens.

Or the fact that black girls as young as four are now having their hair relaxed -- or rather, being turned on to the “creamy crack” -- before their scalps are mature enough to handle it.

Or the fact that some of us are so obsessed with preserving our hair in its weaved and straightened state that we miss out on too many other adventures that life has to offer.

Especially those that involve water.

Now, I’m not saying that all sisters who relax their hair or who wear weaves are self-haters. I relax my hair, in fact.

But what I don’t do is allow my hair to cause me to neglect the rest of my body, or to hold the rest of my desires hostage.

If I did that, I’d miss out on a lot.

If I obsessed that much over my hair, I would never have learned how to scuba dive three years ago. I would have recoiled at the idea of my newly-coiffed hair being submerged in more than 40 feet of water off the coast of St. Maarten, as I adapted to breathing through my mouth and experienced a world of reefs, turtles, angelfish and other underwater life.

If I obsessed that much over my hair, I wouldn’t have backpacked seven miles up Mount LeConte, the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains, in the soaking rain years ago. I would have missed out on seeing deer and chipmunks and trillium, on smelling balsam firs, and on seeing the sunset dust the mountain clouds with swatches of rose and rust.

And if I were a serious hostage to my hair, I would never run six and 10 mile races – ever.

Now, I’m not suggesting that every sister ought to hike a mountain or dive in the Caribbean or run in races to find fulfillment.

What I am saying, though, is that if we make the choice not to swim, or to hike, or to engage in any other sweat-inducing activities, our hair shouldn’t influence that decision.

But in too many cases, it does.

<span style="font-weight: bold">I’ve watched far too many overweight and obese sisters spend hundreds or even thousands on a head full of weave, but won’t spring for a health club membership</span>. I’ve seen some sit for hours to get elaborate hair styles that won’t survive anything more rigorous than them getting in and out of the car.

That’s sad, because this is a big world – and life is too short for us to not experience the world outside of the artificiality of weaves and relaxers.

It’s too short for us to miss out on experiencing nature, or exploring our physicality, or simply preserving our health because we’re slaves to a beauty ideal that never was about us.

Nor will it ever be.
