You see a black woman on the street with permed hair, you ask her where she got it done and she laughs "At home, it is too expensive otherwise!"

common occurrence, isn't it? darn!

I had braids in my hair for two months and it was removed a couple weeks ago. I need to get my hair done but it seems I may have to do it myself. $70.00 just for a perm is extravagant. problem is, I've never permed my hair myself before.

I may have to go locks or something. what are the alternatives? How do you manage your hair?

I spend about that for a relaxer too Donnika. I only go 2X a year though. If it were every 6 weeks or three months, I would have shaved my hair off completely.

You could get a friend to help you do the relaxer at home. I wouldn't recommend trying to do it on your own. The other alternative is going natural, with or without locks. You could press your hair, wear twists, afro, etc., etc.

I support the natural ting. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT get a home-perm, especially done with the help of a friend. NUH DWEEET!!! Yuh cyaan sey mi nevvah wawn yuh. Going natural is and has been all the craze. Yuh can color it and then try one of the options BlackStar suggested. If perming hair is a choice, why do so many peeple tink sey dem haffi dweet? Gwaaan and try something new man. You just might like it.

Blackstar, how do you only do it twice a year? I have to do it atleast 5 times. unless your hair is alot straighter than average.

I am thinking along the lines of natural Nyc/N. the average cost of relaxers is between $8 and $13, yet the hairdressers tell you that they charge 60 upwards depending on the creme.Please!

To be quite honest though, I was never a hair saavy kind of girl. As long as it noh look like it well waan wash or perm, I'm ok. Like I said before though, I had my hair in braids for a while and got an extraoridary amount of compliments on it(especially from white people, seems dem love braids [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] ), but the good thing I found about it was that I could simply get up and go. very low maintenance. I love that.

So I was on the bus on my way home this evening and I was seriously thinking about whether I should just loxx it backside and drop in a little colour...?

NYC/N doh, gimme the links so I can weigh my options.

You could ask for a reduction if you bring your own product. But it sounds like you don't like to fuss over your hair so natural would seem to be the best solution. When you decide to grow your hair out, you'll either have to really pamper the new growth to avoid looking a mess, or go for broke and cut it short.

ETA: I roller set my hair to get the roots fairly straight. Also my hair is a bit past my shoulders so it doesn't matter so much when you have a lot of new growth. When I had short hair, I would get touch ups 3-4 times a year.

actually, the natural I mean is locks. normal hair is something I may not be able to manage. I say bigup to Macy Gray for her abilities to care for her natural hair.
Mine has been permed since I was 11 years old.

I'm open to alternatives.

Think long and hard before doing locks, cos that can be very labor intensive too, depending on your hair type/texture and growth rate. Sometimes it is impossible to do the back and center yourself....
And the type of assistance you can get is very limited, too...

My natural hair looks wierd. Big curls in the roots, and after about 4 or 5 inchess, it gets straight. So me just perm it.

Last time I went to the hairdresser (about 3 weeks now), they used MOTIONS in my hair. And bun up me scalp fe me big $90. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img]

I told them that the only one that works well for me was optimum, cause it doesn't take a long time to process. And my scalp was sensitive. But they don't even carry it. Why? I have no idea.

my hair perms fast as well and my scalp is also very sensitive. I use Dark and Lovely because it is no-lye. I'm tired of the hair fuss every 6 weeks though. tired.
If you have to perm with optimum why not get it at one of the black hair supplies stores and bring it to the salon?

Once you add deep conditioner and a trim and depending on the length of the hair, more and more stylists are indeed charging from $75 to over $100 for a touch up. That's why I only go twice a year.

you know they only charge between J$650 and J$1000 for a perm in Jamaica? including treatments and such.
That comes to about between US$10 and US$16.

then they dont have the dominican hair salons up north where u can get a perm and condition for a lot less than a regular salon. It is also said the dominicans do know how to take the african out of your hair
