Only time Dominicans put a brush in your hair is if you are blowing it out...I have been going to them for years and I tell you they take good care of my hair and they use good products.

true bout the products..you would think that because they are so cheap that they would skimp on products..but the ones I go to use good products...or they use whatever you bring...

Been dread for 12 years - love it love it - highly recommended -

i started them by getting my hair individually braided. i let the braids stay in longer than usual - when i took the braid out - instead of combing my hair - we palm rolled it - the next day - no one even noticed that it was my hair - took about 6 months to totally dread

a friend started hers with the two-strand twist - and just never untwisted them

there are a plethora of locktecians in Atlanta - but i can tighten mine on my own - i also clip them

Seveen..when you wash it...yourself or lock salon...do you air dry and how long does it take you to dry..


mine would need to be tightened every week... still to much work for me..

Well the locktecian would love to put me under the dryer (for about an hour) but I usually have her cornrow it and put it in some kind of up style. I leave it that way for a few days or so. When I take it down, it is curly and swingy.

She interlocks it and i only have it tightened totally about every 3 months. I can tighten the "edges" myself

my mother hated it at first - now she admits it looks good and that it takes years off

Donnika - where are you? 'cause there are black people everywhere [img]/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img] try finding the jamaican or african section of town - and - as Kia mentioned - also look for the spanish section too -

it's not too hard to give yourself a perm - just do the roots - the back will be a little hard - but if you get a mirror you should be able to see the back of your head

just don't let it stay on too long until you get the hang of it

or

teach a friend - white or black

So true, my hairdresser get her products imported from the Dominican as well as she get products made in Italy and Spainns so also uses Sebastien and Nexus products. Some pretty pricey stuff. I normally buy the products and bring them when I get my hair done. Call me a junkie for hair products.

What specific products are they? Sounds like you ladies take great care of your hair.

Seveen, I'm not sure what to teach someone in terms of perming even with my idea of what should be done. I permed someone else's hair once but I dont remember the outcome.

Tecky, I dont use rollers so I always blowdry and use a brush to get in straight. Learn that trick from Jamaican hairdressers, so not only Dominicans do that.

the roots do only the roots - show friend "new growth", apply perm to said growth, watch time and wash thoroughly - there are directions in the box

so glad i don't have to do that anymore

If she is in a place where it is difficult to get a perm, chance of finding a competent lock-er is even slimmer...Even in DC half the salons can't do more than a gel-curl. Cut off my locs cos they needed monthly maintenance...

This is the problem that I have in OKC. There is no one here familiar with Sistalocs, so no one knows how to tighten them. Thank God that the woman in San Diego that use to tighten them, insisted that I learn how to tighten them myself. Who in the heck knew I would get stuck in OKLAHOMA! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

I just started going to a locktecian in the past year.

Before that I tightened my own locks usually just around the front. I used that brown gel stuff and some clips. Palm rolled it, put my scarf on for bed and the next day I'm good to go. After doing this maintenance, I've had folks ask me if I had a perm [img]/forums/images/graemlins/704555_dwl.gif[/img]

When i lived abroad, i showed my friend how to do it - and she still does it for folks "over there".

Part of the allure for me is that I can do it myself. Some hints - don't use too much oil, don't wash them too much (rinse ends, not necessarily whole head), try and sleep with a scarf or tie them up at times

if you are going to loc - make sure you have as many as your head can hold. I have about 450 or more. This allows for a maximum of styles and versatility.

sistalocs is a method of starting locs quickly - yes they are very thin

i'm going see if I can get SassyRas in here for more info - she does her own locs
