i had de same dilemna with my best friend's wedding but since i love her too bad i grinned and beared it, but ONLY from my love for HER. (and cau she love me bad too, she put it on her own CC and i paid her back as i could manage.)
But with this one you a talk bout, i agree - just tell her straight up you cannot. Thank her for inviting you, is an honor, blah blah and ray ray, but you must decline the invitation due to the financials. why bodda stress uself over all this other ish? it don't matter if yu can't pay them riDICKulous prices anyhow.
plus den there is de shoes, and sometimes hair & makeup too; i got hit wit THAT additional $100.00 surprise a few years back at one nedda wedding i was in, and the last minute too so was too late to politely decline. that one HAD to have EVRYTHING all matchy matchy down to hairstyle and makeup colors.
i felt really sneaked up on wit that one
personally mi feel seh if a bride asks yuh to be in the weddin party and them want the pricey formal frock, then that's part of the weddin expenses, which is on THEM. the only way attendants should pay fi dem own dress is when the bride says "OK evryone go buy one pink dress" - i was in one wedding like that (wondeful, practical and easygoing bride) and it was beautiful, with all different shades of her colors, plus all unique styles we all picked fi weselfs, syles that FIT each of us properly, and could be worn again in regular life.
i really hate this sneaky big money weddin business nowadays, with the dyam $400.00 expense it winds up being.

I was always under the impression that the bride is responsible for the bride maids dresses.....and if it's not in the budget, then don't have a Wedding party.....I hate it when peeple create expenses pon other peeple fe dem own personal gratification......wus dem ago tell u what style frack yuh fe get.... all if a sitten weh nuh fit yuh body type..sake a fe dem day

Arite wan time mi was asked to be in a wedding an mi did agree ... Di frack cost was reasonable but di frack di ugly noh rahtid an the cut was more for the "A" cup type.
Honestly, I straight up told her I can't be in the wedding cause I will not be comfy in the dress. And funny unu talk bout Usher because dats exactly what I ended up doing. I told her put mi deysoh instead
Had to come clean and she understood. Cyan tell if shi did mad undaneat but dere was no hard feeling an wi still frens

U actually pay fi hawf a di frack? Wow thats so nice. On the other hand, I think mi bredda in law did had was to buy suit fi him best man and mi sista did bex cyan done. I paid for the makeup and jewelry for my bridal party - dem pay fe dem frack an shoes - mi nuh memba ah how much dem did cost now but I don;t think they were over $100 cause I had fall colors for a summer wedding.
I thought my bridesmaids dresses were pretty stylish but mi really nuh know weh dem coudan wear dem agen an nuh look like gladys

Dats y mi seh *I*...never said it was an etiquette rule. Maybe mi a watch too much platinum weddings
....the brides usually pay all the expenses....
however for brides who aren't wealthy it is normal for them to ask their bride maids to pay for their dresses.....but the Bride should be sensitive with regard to costs......Comment

i can see this pont "in theory" but in reality, it then begs the question "keep it FI <span style="font-weight: bold">WHAT</span>?" That frock ain't never gonna be worn again - it's only use once, for the wedding it's bought for.
and yeh ms. Practical Easygoing Bride did have friends with sense, (or we wudden be her friends first place). she neva did look pon we dresses til she see them on the weddin day, and i must say it looked great. her colors were dove gray and pale yellow, the groomsmen all had de saft yellow in the cummerbunds, and we maids had all different shades from bright to pastel, it made a gorgeous palette.
