[Pepper]

What happen, no gardening thread this summer? I was looking forward to learning more about successful gardening. Especially since I started one this year and it is doing so/so. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

I planted a couple of tomato plants. They bushes are doing well. They are almost the same height at me. (5'4") but not one tomato sprout. Is this normal? The leaves are strong and healthly.

I planted sweet peppers, calallo, scotch bonnet, onions, and lettuce. They are doign OK, not great. I think I need to prepare the soil better next year. We have very dry and sandy soil and I noticed a lot of people "build" a garden with about top soil. They use bricks to mark off an area and fill that area with about a foot of topsoil and work the garden from there. Looks like that is what I am going to have to do next year.

Don't feel any way. That's how it always is the first year. I have a nice garden (I had no choice, I inherited a front yard composed entirely of weeds!)

Anyway, year one consisted of me digging up half of it - carrying rocks and stones from the site they were excavating to build a new house next door - scavanging patio stones - and begging my stoosh friends for some of her plants.

Anyway, year two I sewed lots of seeds (cosmos) and with my friends wear and leff plonts my garden looked quite lovely, so I dug up the entire front, begged some more plants, and this my third year I can tell you my peony bush was just to die!

In my back yard I have a small vegetable plot, but I also have a grape vine!

I have callalloo (something likes them); cantalopes, lots of tomatoes - cherry and beefstake, spinach, collards (love that they'll stay green into December) and cho cho (hopes it bears).

Anyway, my garden at the front is doing very well, I sewed a lot of seeds that I harvested and I'm watching stuff grow to see what they turn into!

I planted two different variety of cana lillies (banana flowers) which were supposed to be good up to -29, but they didn't come back [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img] My hybrid hybiscus came back though - hope it blooms.

My neighbours always comment on it. It's very relaxing to just sit there with a small spot of beauty while I'm doing my daughter's hair. Almost like living in JA.

hey Pepper girl,yu should see mi garden dis year.we had to take up about 1 foot of dirt all thu de garden the buy a yard of top soil to put back down.

if yu go to the dump,(cause wen mi did live there mi do dat) with plastic bags yu can fill dem with the best top soil for free. take as much as yu can,spread it in your garden,dont worry dat yu plant already. then tek one of de likle garden fork an mix it into your soil.

as to the tomatoes their is a fertilizer,really its for the soil call Osmocote,sprinking it around all your plants. before yu plant you can put some in the hole yu dig then put the plant in.

yesterday i planted my Blue berry,rasp berry,sage,and thyme,seen they are prerenials dont have to worry bout those, then in between i transplant my callalo,look real nice,fi real. mi also put rose bush on the side, fi shade an to hold de soil,dem have strong roots. oh, my tomatoes are in pots,with blossoms already.

all my other herbs are in posts,tru,mi like fresh herbs in the winter so in the fall mi bring dem in.

My lawn is nice and green, and I planted a thatch palm last month. I had some ugly ferns planted in the border area around the lawn. Just pulled those up and had the border pressure cleaned and sprayed with deck spray. Now I just need to decide what to plant there. I need to find something that does not require a lot of work. I am not really interested in taking care of a flowers garden. I am going to look for some type of low growing leafy plant.

G2, thanks for the tip about going to the dump. I am going to have to check that out. I just took down the pool and have this large sandy area that needs grass. So definitely, top soil from the dump is a good idea to fill that area in. But for the garden, I am not going to bother trying to fix it this year. In the fall, I will start preparing for next year.

I planted a mango tree. We have had a lot of rain lately and some of the leaves have turned brown. I guess it will be OK. The ackee tree is finally looking good. Lots of new leaves are springing up. The banana tree is doing OK, can’t wait for it to bear.

My garden is blooming beautiful flowers!!!

Dahlia's are out and looking gorgeous in 3 colours, white, yellow and red big flowery blooms.

Gladiolas are all over the place

Ameryllis(sp?) put out the most beautiful flower I've ever seen and it looks like their blooming time are done.

The Roses, oh my goodness ... big red roses and big pink roses bloomed and since I've pruned I see new buds bursting out!

Tickweed, bless that plant, tiny yellow flowers are prolific in the garden.

The Hostas have put out their long stemmed purplish bell-shaped flower ...

The myriad of annuals which I can't name are dazzling to look at ...

How can I forget my Hibiscuses, big buds are ready to open up to big beautiful flowers!

The Day Lilies are a breath of fresh air ...

I planted 3 giant Sunflower (from tiny seeds) and they're not far from putting out buds. So much more plants and I do not know the name of a few ...

My potted plants are looking great ... Jade plant, Hostas, 3 variety of Ferns, some kind of Croton looking plant and the potted plants that I thought got killed by the winter frost of last year are coming up!

I'm waiting for the Begonias, Anemones and more plants to start flowering.

I spend so much time in my garden and spent the past 2 months making a shady garden below the deck ~ this garden comprises of Hostas and a variety of shady annuals. I think I will keep it that way and let the Hostas be the only perennial plant.

Pity, I have not started taking pictures as yet and have missed the Ameryllis(sp?) beautiful flowers.

Last night I noticed that the pepper trees I planted have some good size peppers on them but they're green and I'm not certain if I should wait for them to ripen on the tree or pick them off from now ...

My back yard, is composed of half crushed rock, and well packed down dirt, with a smattering of honey maple fence stain, and now a pretty grey/blue deck board paint! with piles of lumber of each side. I did manage to get up some very nice hanging pots, and the clear lights on the fence. Deck is being built this wk end.

The front yard. Well what can I say, I have not got to it yet. I had a load of top soil delivered and now pretty weeds are growing on and round ( it sorta has the look of a fresh grave site to it)

I do have a small garden on the side of the house. The marigolds are doing well, and hot peppers, tomatoes, lettus, swiss chard and sunflowers.

Next yr...........look out!!!!!!! Its gonna look great.

Its hotter than the hinges of hell here.

Just finished the first gallon of deck paint. Finally finished the 2x6 and 2x8 12ft long boards, and the 16ft ones are terrible to lift by myself. Slow but sure that is me. I am almost half way......... to be cont'd........

I started my garden here about 4 years ago - that's really the only gardening I've done (I grew up in the city).

My mom has gardened for a long time though, and she lives close by, so I got a lot of plants and advice from her.

I've never seen calalloo around here, can I grow it in Ohio? I do love to eat it, though beet greens aren't a bad substitute. I have a few kinds of tomatoes, sugar snap peas, beets, lettuce, cantaloupe and beans. This year I'm trying zucchini.

I really like perennial gardening, that's my fun garden. Shrubs and trees too, we had a LOT of grass at this house and I'm taking more and more for gardens.

We have clay soil (opposite problem of sand) and have to add compost and stuff to make it drain better and have more good plant stuff in it.

I have some pictures maybe I can put them up somewhere and post them...
