I planted scotch bonnet peppers in pots on my deck....dem pretty now u see and everyday mi out deh a count di likkle pepper dem whe a come out....mi jus plant some cucumber cause di price a di supermarket a kill me.....ongle hope it not too hot

I'm so glad I found this thread! I love to garden, but this so far this year we've had soooo much rain, it's hard to get motivated, but I've finally gotten all my planting done [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] I did have a question, this plant has popped up in our garden (we just moved in last Fall) and I have no idea i f it's a weed (probably) or was intentionally planted by the previous owners. It doesn't look familiar to me, as I said it's most likely a weed, but I thought somebody would be able to identify it. If it's a weed, it's gone!!!

It looks like fireweed to me. has lovely flowers my dad grows it on purpose just for the flowers. But yes it's a weed. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] It does have nice flowers though.

Hi all. Tuckersmom, that plant looks hauntingly familiar - just like all of the ones I have in an uncleared field at my house. Are those flower buds? Maybe you should wait and see what happens if it not in the way. Just remember to pull it out while it's still in flower if you don't like it, so it doesn't set seed and spread. The weather in MA has been so bad - I have almost nothing done and it is 6/13!! Normally, I would have had most everything palnted weeks ago. Very depressing. I need to get my hands into the earth in order to get balanced, but this summer, I am afraid of frostbite! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img]

Thanks everybody for the info [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] The "weed" is history, Tom finally got tired of waiting for it to do anything and dug it up this morning. Just as well, it was blocking the view of some plants behind it - it just seemed to be getting taller and not flowering! Thanks again, here's what it was blocking.....

all a weed is is an indigenous species that is probably more benificial than your cultivated plants. they will attract more of the 'good' bugs to destroy the 'bad' bugs that your introduced species will attract. they eliminate the need for pesticides and insecticides which result in an improved environment. always find space in your garden for 'weeds' and do the natural environment a favour.

My Gladiolas have started blooming!! As much as I do not like cutting any of my blooming plants off the stem for putting in a vase, I reluctantly had to cut the first Gladiola that bloomed. It got top heavy and was drooping towards the ground, so I cut it.

All the Day Lilies except one are blooming magnificently.

The garden store had 20% off over the weekend, and I could not resist. Bought a whole variety of tropical plants ~~ black Taro (so beautiful), and some others which I can't identify.

I have a Dracaena plant in a pot from last year, it's about 3ft tall. I've noticed that it's shedding leaves on the rapid and putting out new growth slowly. I'm wondering if it's becoming too big (roots need more growing space) for its pot... Dracaena is a foliage plant.

Damn slugs and snails! These slimy creepy crawlies petrify the hell out of me and they're nyaming up my Potato Vine plants and my Hostas!

No way will I ever put my fingers on these slimy cralies to pick them off my plants, but I need to find a good organic product that'll melt these slime balls away and banish them from my garden and plants permanently.

Any one...?

Beer. Put cut off plastic containers around you plants. Dig them in so there isn't a lip the slugs have to climb over, make sure you have at least an inch of cheap beer in there. the slugs go for the beer and drown, you have to empty out the bodies every couple of days and fill with new beer. It's the only thing I've found works for sure, slug bait, salt trough, other things didn't. Although I here Diatomaceous earth works, some people swear by it, supposedly slices their undersides all up and kills them.

I know your woes though slugs took every single fancy sunflowers I planted this year (all 60 of them [img]/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img] ) and have been chewing the life out of my pansies and sun chokes [img]/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img] I have so many slugs the beer can't kill enough of them. I'm thinking of putting in a beer river right around my garden [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] (this is what happens when you live in a rainforest though) slugs hang from trees in the woods during the spring here. No joke, one year there had to be a few thousand hanging from their slime ropes in one campsite when I went camping. they mate on these ropes when it rains. Really really creepy , and I'm not squeamish about slugs but that made my skin crawl.

Introduce a large number of nematodes to kill slugs on the soil surface and under the ground. This tiny parasite occurs naturally in the ground. As it enters the slug through its mantle, the saddle-like structure on its back, it multiplies, causing the mantle to swell. The slug stops feeding and will die within two weeks.

Nematodes are most effective when the soil temperature is between 5°C to 20°C (41°F to 68°F), so they are best applied between March and October. One application of nematodes remains effective for around six weeks. Snails cannot be controlled in this way as they are protected by their shells.

Traps to tempt gourmet pests


The skin of half a grapefruit or a melon on the ground is a great bait. Alternatively, sink a container into the ground and half-fill it with beer, milk or grape juice.



Slugs, finding these liquids irresistible, will fall in and drown. However, be careful to keep the rim of the container 2cm to 3cm (0.75in to 1.25in) above soil level or beneficial ground beetles may also fall into the trap.


How to protect your plants from attack


A common method is to scatter a layer of grit or broken eggshells around the plants, because slugs and snails are thought to dislike crossing the coarse texture. Alternatively, you could try encircling your plants with slug and snail tape. This copper strip gives off a small electric charge when it comes into contact with the slime of the slug or snail. This is enough to repel them and stop them eating plants. Potatoes should be lifted as soon as they have finished growing and plants such as hostas are best grown in pots where they are less likely to be attacked

ok guys here is mi garden delema...

i planted my tomatoes at the same time 2 in pots (because i have done dat for 3 years before the house was built) an now because i love to see it [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img] [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] . anywho,DWL, the 2 in the pot got blossoms an now have tomatoes. the ones in the ground dont even have flowers yet. should i be worried.

last year they were on even par [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img] could it be because the weather was so rotten,an the ground was colder than the pots. i use no fertilzer just sheep manure.

It is undoubtedly the warmth of the soil. Wasn't your Spring non-existant like New England? All the veggies that need it really hot are a little behind. Be patient, I bet it will catch up. You could put some large rocks around each plant to absorb the heat from the sun. At night, it will radiate back out. Know what I mean?
