If it were would we see at least one example of a dominant language?
Instead it is the exact opposite with English as the dominant language and the other languages and dialects attenuating the English base. In this respect Patois was the common unifying language of both the Slave class and the Master class.

Sounds like your bought into that pidgin theory.

Some people even believe is because dem stupid why dem kyaan talk no better english after all these years. The Irish slave master was in no better position.

Check any Kwa language.

from my study of linguistics, english has a germanic grammatical base, although it uses a number of &quot;foreign&quot; words. the way a sentence is structured (syntax) and tenses are formed is apparently germanic. romance languages (based on latin), have their own syntax and grammar.

it's a similar deal with patwa. it is indeed heavily influenced by english - probably because that was the common language for slaves who spoke different languages based on their country of origin. nevertheless, even among the different slave languages there would have been a common linguistic thread that determined things like the use of tenses, etc. it's it this african linguistic base that has shown itself in patwa.

there's oodles of study done on this. the most accessible is Fred Cassidy's work, Jamaica Talk.
