Long story but I was actually born in San Cristobal, Venezuela while my parents lived there for a couple of years. However, I consider myself Puerto Rican since my parents are Puerto Rican. I was 8 months old when my parents moved to Michigan so my mom could pursue her doctorate in education

I am a research scientist at one of the smaller government laboratories. My work involves the use of high performance computing resources to examine problems within the overarching field of atmospheric science. I also had a graduate student working for me in the summer under an educational outreach program. I enjoy it but it has been a very challenging position with far too much travelling for my taste. I have been there since late March.

5. How old are you? (Did I miss this one?)

I am 37

6. Are you religious? To what Faith do you subscribe? How do you reconcile evolution vs. creation theories?

Not religious at all. I used to be a devote christian but the atmosphere of anti-intellectualism in all of the churches that I attended and visited finally got to me.I don't reconcile the theory of evolution and the pseudoscience of creationism. The former is good science while the latter is religion posing as science that yields nothing but embarrasment for its proponents.

7. What do you thin about various conspiracy theories regarding space travel, landing on the moon, etc.

Occam's Razor says it all. If multiple hypotheses are posed that describe different causes for an event, the hypothesis that invokes the least complexity is usually the correct one. There is far too much verifiable evidence concerning the Apollo lunar landings to sustain movie soundstage conspiracy theories tauted by otherwise rational individuals..

Even though I see your speciality is physics, I am wondering if you could answer a few questions I have about human evolutionary theory, since you also have expressed some interest in this subject.

What is the date of the earliest remains identified as human? Could you explain some about the methods used to date these discoveries?

I admit to some confusion on the subject of the "missing link." My understanding (which could be out of date) is that no ancestral link has ever been found (hence the adjective "missing") between humans and apes. Does this impact at all on your belief in evolutionary theory?

Can you expound on the theory or fact that the human race originated in Africa? If you regard this as merely a theory - why? If you regard this as a fact - what evidence are you basing it on?

Does it frustrate you when you try to explain to ja.com'ers that "race" is merely a cultural construct, with no biological/genetic basis, but they don't seem to accept this?

What is the correct terminology to describe the fact that all "races" of humans are able to reproduce with one another? Does this in itself negate the concept of "race," or does it merely indicate that we all belong to the same species, so that "race" remains as a valid concept equivalent to different "breeds" of dogs?

Have you ever heard of or read the book Woman's Evolution, by Evelyn Reed? If so, what did you think of it?

I speak it fluently but mostly with family. I have developed an embarrasing american accent in my spanish over the years.

Honestly, I have never been asked if I am Dominican. I tend to get asked if I am most other mationalities, however. Really, the difference between Cuban, Dominican, and Puerto Rican versions of Spanish are certain syntax usages, local words, and accents/drawls. We have no problem understanding each other, however.

I don't have one favorite but a few in each genre

Yes. I ski but not very well. At least I have not done what my brother did - take a trip to Seven Springs ski having only skied once before. He went to the expert slope and descended without slaloming. By the time he hit that snow mound and went airborne, he must have been travelling 60 mph. All I saw was a cloud of snow as he descended down the remainder of the slope. He ended up on his back right undernead the ski lift. He said he heard lift riders exclaim "Oh my God! I think he's dead!" and "Call EMS!" He wasn't even hurt after all that but he faced the humiliation of being strapped down to a stretcher and carted back to the first aid center.

If we crave some cosmic purpose, then let us find ourselves a worthy goal.

I do help others through teaching and mentoring. Imparting knowledge will hopefully be my gift to the world.

Ah...because mathematicians are invariably wrong. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] [img]/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img] Really, both camps are reliant on each other. However, professional jealousies and pride typically work to undermine much of the cohesion that should take place.

I probably would not have married the first time. It was a learning experience but it cost me time that I could have had to start a family with the right person.
