Hi BP, congratulations on appearing in BWBP.

Even though I see your speciality is physics, I am wondering if you could answer a few questions I have about human evolutionary theory, since you also have expressed some interest in this subject.

What is the date of the earliest remains identified as human?

Archaic forms of Homo Sapiens Sapiens remains have been dated to 500,000 years. Fossils of truly modern humans have dated back to ~130,000 years.


Could you explain some about the methods used to date these discoveries?

There are a plethora of fossil dating techniques in current use by paleontologists and archeologists. One of the most common forms is radiometric dating which relies on ascertaining the concentration of radioactive elements found within the fossil remains. Since the decay rates of these elements is known precisely, determining the age of a specimen is a straight forward procedure. A more thorough summary of methods exists at the following link:

I admit to some confusion on the subject of the "missing link." My understanding (which could be out of date) is that no ancestral link has ever been found (hence the adjective "missing") between humans and apes. Does this impact at all on your belief in evolutionary theory?

"Missing link" claims are often used by creationists to refute the evidence suggesting a common ancestry between Homo Sapiens and modern apes. However, it stems from a clear lack of understanding regarding the process of evolution. Organisms just don't change overnite into transitional forms and then, just as quickly evolve into modern forms. The process of evolution is slow and labored and it may lead to dead-end branches in the tree of life.

When asked about the "missing link" in the evolutionary line of Homo Sapiens, one merely has to point to the fossil remains of Australopithicus Africanus or Homo Habilis or Homo Erectus or Homo Agester to reveal the hominid transitional forms that presaged us in the evolutionary chain.

Can you expound on the theory or fact that the human race originated in Africa? If you regard this as merely a theory - why? If you regard this as a fact - what evidence are you basing it on?

When discussing the subject of origins, one is forever relegated to discuss the subject from the context of theory. No scientific analysis documents the steady process of evolution at the same time it is occuring so Paleontogists, Archeologists, and Anthropologists must piece together the evidence in order to clear the often murky view of our past.

Mary Leakey, renowned paleontolgist, had spent her career collecting hominid fossils scattered throughout the Olduvai Gorge in northern Tanzania and had surmised that these remains predated nearly all other fossils found in Africa or the the rest of the world. The key, however, is that the very earliest remains such as the australopithecines are only found in Africa. Not a single australopithecine fossil has been recovered anywhere else in the world. This suggests that the evolutionary line of modern humans began on the grasslands of subsaharan Africa.

Does it frustrate you when you try to explain to ja.com'ers that "race" is merely a cultural construct, with no biological/genetic basis, but they don't seem to accept this?

Absolutely. But this shortsightedness most likely results from deeply-ingrained social prejudices and not from a lack of comprehension.

What is the correct terminology to describe the fact that all "races" of humans are able to reproduce with one another? Does this in itself negate the concept of "race," or does it merely indicate that we all belong to the same species, so that "race" remains as a valid concept equivalent to different "breeds" of dogs?

Interfility. Yes...the fact the all Homo Sapiens may interbreed with each other regardless of their region of origin cements the ultimate fallacy of the notion of race. However, more importantly, our genetic similarities suggest that every single human alive today descended not only from the same hominid line but possibly a very small group of austalopithecine progenitors. Breeds of dogs are also a construct that we have developed. Canis Familiaris are one species from the smallest Chihuahua to the largest St. Bernard.[/b]

As long as they utilitze their full potential in a career they can be proud of, I would be happy.

After a while. our differences broke the bond that led us to marriage. We were both at fault but what ultimately killled the marriage was that my ex refused to move to Louisville with me suring my postdoc which only lasted one year. I had even gotten her a job in Louisvlle that paid more than the job she already had.I needed to go to advance my career as a scientist but she did not want to leave the security of the DC area. She sent me the bill of complaint for divorce proceedings in the mail. I suggested that we seek counseling but she flat out refused. I stopped loving her at this point. After I obtained a high-paying position in northern VA, she started calling me and asking about reconciliation but her efforts were so transparent that it insulted my intelligence. When she did not precede with the divorce, I took the initiative and finished what she had started.We don't talk much now since each of us has moved on with live but, on rare ocassion, I think back to what we had been, what we might of been, and what we are now.

Much of life is "do it yourself." There maybe a soulmate for everyone but that connection takes a lot of work to maintain.

Never. That is one thing my dad had taught me - a man should never hit a woman under any circumstances.

I was actually a little deliquent. I grew up in the midwest and there was little to do but get into trouble. I started smoking as a preteen, drinking hard liquor, watching porn, getting into fights, and staying out late. Surprisingly, I straightened when my parents moved to the DC area. My true eggheadedness was not revealed until high school, however.

8. Do you find handcuffs exciting in any way?

Yes and I do so for exercise when the gym gets boring.

Yes. I learned as a pickney and can manage well at the pool or beach.

Yes. I want several years ago. I enjoyed the sensation tremendously despite the fact that I was strapped to an instructor. I would recommend it.

No. The chewing and popping noises get on my nerves.My fiancee chews gum but she is quiet so I tolerate it.

A typical afternoon thunder storm releases more energy in the condensation of water vapor into cloud droplets and rain than the energy released by the atomic bomb that fell on Hiroshima.

The is still much to learn about the various feedbacks in our coupled ocean, land, atmosphere system before any definitive answers can be obtained. At present, the biggest concern is clouds. We are not certain if continued global warming will cause an increase of high cirrus cloud which will exacerbate the warming or if an increase in cumulus type clouds (which partially reduce the amount of sunlight that impinges on earth's surface and as a consequence counteracts the warming) will dominate the atmospheric radiative budget. Furthermore, the effect of aerosols on the radiative budget is not completely understand and my also be an important factor in modulating any future warming.

The continued development of atmospheric general circulation models and the increased availability of remotely sensed and obserational data will hopefully help to address some of these difficult questions.

Perhps there is something akin to reincarnation or perhaps not. As an agnostic, I cannot say for certain since I do not have enough evidence of its existence or lack of existence to relate a definitive answer.

Actually est may conote either being or possession. For example:

Gaius est agricola may be translated as

Gaius (Old MacDonald) is a farmer

or

Gaius (Old MacDonald) has a farm eeii, eeii, ooo...etc.
