What kind of culture shock did you go through when you first arrived in farrin?

I recall being [img]/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif[/img] when I saw my upstairs neighbor returning from taking her dog for a walk with a leash. I thought, a suh everthing get TLC a farrin. She stopped inside the gate to chat with me, and then I remember yelling at her 'look, look the dog is going inside the house'. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img] [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img] She said, yes its time for us to go in.

She was our upstairs neighbor and me membah going inside feeling odd cause me did inside di building wid a dog obove me head.

What culture shock did you experience when yuh first reach a farrin?

...and btw, to dis day, me still nuh like di idea of cohabitating wid a dog.

actually, it was the brick homes... I was beside myself because I thought for sure I wouldnt be able to find my way around. everywhere looked the same! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif[/img] [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif[/img]

I wish more people felt this way I couldnt agree more. and yes we have a dawg in the house. The husband is big freak for his dawg. I hate this more than anything in my day to day.

Goin to your place my shock was how the people Talk with their car horns. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif[/img]

Pepper I was talking about this with a co-worker yesterday. For me it was a few things but the biggest shock was the classroom. Students were dressed in ripped up jeans, they had their feet on their desks, cigarettes over their ears and they talked back to the teachers. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif[/img]

Speaking of back chat, I couldn't believe when I heard other kids giving their parent back-chat and they lived. Me naily drop when me hear one boy cuss badwud to him modda..he was less than 10.

everybody dress casual fe everyting..back in those days Jamaicans neva wear ganzie eena public
children were not very motivated in school like Jamaica. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif[/img] [img]/forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif[/img] .this one was HUGE..you could really get by with a lot less effort. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img].but that could have been an inner city ting..because it sure catches up with you later

Seeing all the 13 and 14 year old girls wearing full makeup.

the way ppl would just put their sandwich down anywhere on any counter or desk or table or whatever...also being kissy-face with dogs & animals...& the way the youths disrespected the teachers-in j-a we would get licks; the fact that black ppl called each other n-word; the fact that ppl resent if you try to scold their child...in my hometown in j-a any adult could scold you...now they curse off the adult who scolds their kid...kids making out near the school during school hours was strange to me...grilled cheese sandwiches (yuck)...i vomited the first time i ate pizza...
the stupidest thing i did was try to flag down a train the first time i went on the subway
