Many people wear dreads that are Jamaican or not Jamaican. Many young kids I'm growing up with right now are first generation Americans of Jamaican, and they are too heavily influenced more by America than Jamaica. The only reason they would want dreads is because of this new afro and braids obsession.

Now you have Jamaicans wanting to be American, with Americans wearing braids and then having some Hispanic and Asian kids trying to be urban, or as Americans would say "black", don't you think people should just be themselves?

And even the Jamerican kids with the dreads, they don't even believe in the Rastafarian beliefs, just to wear dreads for style. That is abusing culture and tradition, just like how this year in England anything Indian was in style and the women thought sari were "sexy", when 1) to wear one was different and stupid years ago 2) something sexy is apart of Hinduism and Indian culture/life generally.

jaindian, you are not wrong that it happens, no one said that. you are wrong for saying it is wrong. please remember dreads go back long before there were rastafarians. it is way past the time in this world when we can go back to insular countries and societies.

the world knows too much of the world. let me ask you this, jaindian. you are obviously a rabid fan of indian movies. what if indian movies were only allowed in and only shown in india? how could you have ever have known that you love them so much? and, what if indians found out you saw them and enjoyed them and they were angry about it and said that should not be allowed to happen?

over centuries, styles, fashions, ideas, beliefs have spred. this did not start with the 1980's us of a. this sharing (and, i dare say this angst about the sharing) has been going on for long before even i was born, jaindian. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

you seem like a very wise yute for your years. i am quite impressed by you. keep learning and educating yourself (as even i do). i truly believe you are gonna end up as an amazing human being and citizen in whatever country in which you chose to live.

Let there be no doubt about it, I was born in Jamaica! I don't know how this fact got twisted. I lived there for the first 6 years of my life, so I am a born Jamaican. It doesn't matter that I have spent the rest of the time in the U.S(28 years), I am what I am, and very proud of it. Now, as far as the dreadlock issue is concerned, I still maintain that foreigners and dreads don't mix. I checked on that link that you supplied, it was interesting but didn't provide any proof that foreigners used to wear dreads. All it said was it is believed that they used to wear dreads in Egypt. As for my own Jamaican people not supporting me on this board, it is sad. It is also the reason why I feel that many Jamaicans have lost their way. Why is it bad to promote your own people? Americans promote their own kind and so should we. Like I said before, I feel that this is a big part of the reason why Jamaica is the way it is today. They are to concerned with following the lead of foreigners instead of building their own thing. Am I right or wrong? No stocking caps or cowboy hats for me.

but, beyond that, your initial post questionned "foreigners" following what you apparently believe to be something owned and attached to jamaicans only. (i assume you mean true rastafarians, then).

in this, your most recent post, you speak of jamaicans following the lead of the us. which bothers you the most?

you have every right to be proud of being a jamaican. as prideful, why are you not seeing that taking some of that cultural is a way for "foreigners" to agree with your inherent pride?

i think almost every jamaican on this board is very proud of being jamaican. i also think almost every "foreigner" on this board thinks quite highly of jamaica and jamaicans.

perhaps it is that the majority of people feel this mutual good feeling is something wonderful and something worthy of building upon as opposed to something to be ashamed or annoyed about.

I agree...it is sad to not support your own people...my question is why is it you think the people on this board dont do that. Personally I think that at the very least 95% of all members of this board support Jamaica and Jamaicans to the fullest extent. Why cant you see that?

YOu seem to forget that what you promote is segregation and separation. Thats not what is going to make this world work. I sense a much deeper issue for you than just culture mixing and "foreigners" wearing dreads. Have you considered counseling? YOu have alot of anger and resentment inside you...you need to let it out.

If foreigners are so awful...why are you still in the US I wonder? Maybe you should go back to "YOUR" Jamaica and save it from the rest of the wicked world.

When did I say that foreigners are bad or wicked. I never said that. I am quite happy where I am, I don't have to go anywhere. There are plenty of my own people in New York and the surrounding area. I can be fully immersed in my own culture and maintain my own way of life. I do not live in Idaho or Montana, so I can enjoy all the Jamaican benefits that the city has to offer.
I just want to know why so many of my people love foreign culture so much. I see so many Jamaicans hanging out with and dating Americans or Hispanics, I am just curious to know why. It wasn't like that when I was growing up. Why the change? For those Jamaicans that date Americans or Hispanics, can you please explain to me the reason for your actions. What do you get out of it? I know that we all have to work together, but do we have to play toether too?
As for what I said about Jamaicans mimicking bad American habits, am I not right? Is all this hip-hop culture and ebonic talking improving our culture? I can see a direct correlation between the popularity of this BET and MTV culture and the deterioration in the quality of life in Jamaica. This materialistic culture is destroying Jamaica! I see the changes in Jamaica every time I visit there, and I can tell you that as far as I am concerned, it isn't changing for the better. As for Egyptians not being foreigners, all I can say is that as far as I understand, a foreigner is one who comes from a different country than you. I think that under this definition, an Egyptian would be considered a foreigner to a Jamaican.

How do I feel about Jamaicans who are not rastas wearing dreads? I do not think that it is a problem as long as they don't do things that are anti-rasta when they are wearing them. We are all Jamaicans so I don't believe that we should separate ourselves just because of what we believe in. Unity is strength and strength is what we need in these times. All Jamaicans can lay claim to all cultural items that come from Jamaica. We are all one people. I just don't like to see those losers that spend all their
time hanging around the tourist areas waiting for foreign women to wear them.
