No, East Indians don't bleach. Many of the light skinned East Indians that arrived in the Caribbean had Afghanis and Kashmiris along with them. As well, a few Punjabis came to the Caribbean through Uttar Pradesh. That is why some of us are light.

And to some it up:
Racism is everywhere! Blacks actions are being misrepresented and overexposed, East Indians are being screwed, the worst thing to be in America is Asian, and America is obsessed with race.

You generalize too much boss! When last you been there anyways? There are two indian shops close by me an they sell indian brands of bleaching cream, I have seen indian women buying them.

Back to the topic, racism in the Caribbean being not so bad or worst is depending on the individual, because it is relative to complexion. For me, when I am away from home racism is to be expected but at home racism should not be. Racism is especially the worst when it is under your own roof, in your own land.
How many hotels still bar black people from entering to their beaches? And that N word is more frequently used in the (British) West Indies than any place else on earth that many of us even take it for a nice word [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] But I guess if them say it, it is bad but not when you hear it a yard.

I don't need to listen to this bull! You guys are so Afro-Centric, and you want the whole world to have African ancestry. I think this is in the eyes of you all. The only time I hear this from another race member is when he has black friends.

Indians are Indians, they aren't black. Even the one drop rule (one drop of Negro blood makes you black) was made by blacks because they wanted everyone to be black. This is ignorance and disrespect. You don't hear whites talking about Indians British and Aryan ancestry, then yet, why are blacks ALWAYS wanting to talk about Indians supposed black blood, Native Americans are black, the first people were black, and black has history in every place in the world. Why? Because you want to run it.

If one reason why there is racism, is because of the information you put out there. To Sukana and the many people that back up the statements that everything in the world is black and black is first, then yes, I can already feel some racism boiling in my blood.

Here is a link which will explain to you how India originated geologically fron a land mass, called Gondwana or Gondwanaland, which was made up of Africa, South America, Antarctica, and Australia. Gondwanaland This might explain the physical characteristics which appear African in the people of the South Pacific, Australia, and the color of many of the people of India.

Again you are wrong. There were laws in this country, made by white governments, that instituted what you refer to as the "one drop" rule or the Racial Integrity Law of 1924. Specifically, the "one drop" law was advocated but not authored by Walter Plecker and others in Virginia. His power as the Registrar in the Va. Bureau of Vital Statistics was mostly aimed at Indians, who he felt were "polluted" by their association historically with free Blacks. See the link: Racial Integrity Law of 1924

Excuse me madame, I am just putting my knowledge out there, and trying to correct my mistakes. Your ignorance and close mind approach towards me is not going to help. That was very rude, and I am not even going to use any excuses anymore now. Many black Americans are very racist, and so are many Asians, and that's the bottom line. I might be only talking about East Indians being victims, but seriously, which one of you wants to hear it? I hear many black Americans always talking about how they were mistreated during slavery, well, wot about my brothers and sisters in Guyana that get killed for no reason? You don't hear us crying out for sympathy or trying to override the majority of the population do you?

You SHOULD go to any Guyanese website, and see that the robberies and kidnappings are towards East Indians, and that they don't happen to any person of African origin around that area? sukuna I would disagree with you that the caste system has a positive side system because it reduces mutation and inbreeding. Many ethnic groups still have cultures where inbreeding is encourage. I was surprise when an east Indian married his cousin but I was more surprised when an Italian told me that the same things goes on in part of Italy. Inbreeding is encouraged as a way to keep the wealth in family. The question that need to be answer is inbreeding and mutation is such a negative thing how did the population increased at such a high rate before they started checking to see if people were related. The caste system is a racist and supremist system that benefit a small minority that believe that they are better than their untouchable(the most disgusting way to describe another human being) or dalit brothers.

Racism in the Caribbean isn't different,but to me acts of racism or racist remarks are less frequent.why is this so hard to believe or comprehend???It may be prevalent in all Carribean countries,but to me it is not AS prevalant as it is in the US and perhaps the UK.

I mean very often I'm hearing some black Americans(esp. teenagers)saying negative things about whites or Carribean ppl.Then,of course u have some white americans who mistreat or who make racist remarks about blacks and perhaps other minorities.When I'm in JA,I just dont hear these type of remarks nearly as much as
I do here in the US.But that is my experience in just one carribean country.

Jamaica has more classism than racism. Racism if it exists is more disguised by classism because those that would be racist, it just so happens, are racist against those in another social standing.

Simple man interesting take on classism but does racism occurs when an act does not explicitly use race as a factor to expliot differences between the race but is still designed to exploit racial differences. Classism alone cannot explain why dark skinned Jamaican are a majority of the lower classes. Moreover, to say that those who would be racist are racist against those in another social class is a clever way to blame the victims of racism.

LadyDayShaw I can understand your position because my brother expresses the same sentiments about your geographic location in the US. However, growing up in JA I saw numerous incidents of racism. Racism in JA was very obvisious. I always had a laff when dark skinned blacks would talk about their English, Irish, Spanish, and white ancestors while denying their African heritage. This why JAindian was so interesting because even though I tried to inform her about our common AFRICAN HERITAGE she did not want to acknowledge it. She would rather to be ignorant because she is scared of being called an African. I remember seeing some dark skinned women who would bleach their skins so they would look more white. Ask yoursef why would some women go to such extreme if racism in Jamaica and the other Caribbean Island was not an issue. Why is that the dark skinned women were not view as attractive the light skinned women even by the dark skinned men? Look at the beauty pagents and television and she who is the Caribbean society ideal beauty. How many successful men in and from the Caribbean do you see with ladies who are dark skinned? Racism in the Caribbean is color conflict.

I remembered having to memorized the "I have a dream speech" in school in Jamaica but not being taught about Marcus Garvey in the same detail. Later when I heard the whole speech I felt that I was manipulated. Why do you think we were taught to memorize their fact instead of do inquiry to find out what really happen?

In the US, I personally feel that black men experience more racism than black women. If you doubt this follow a black man for a couple days.I remember asking a professor how did Colombus discover the new world if Africans and indigenous people were already in the Americas, she told me that is when europeans first saw the Americas. College gave me a better understanding of racism and why some people rationalized racism. I will never forget one day a I was trying to get a taxi with a white friend and two taxis stopped
because they saw two white guys and the white said you take that taxi because they do not like to stop for black men. My white friend and I got in the taxi and the East Indian taxi driver said I did not stop for you two I stopped for the other two white guys." My white friend started to curse because that was the first time she heard that from a taxi driver. If we were not late, I would have got out of the taxi.

Yes I would agree with you that teenagers say some negative and racist things but it goes both ways. Look at JaIndian, she is a Caribbean teenager. My experience as Afro-Jamaican man is that very rarely will most people have the nerve to say racist things to me.

First off TONIC, I'm a guy, and I am not a "she". Just needed to clear that up.

I am not suspect, that's bull. I don't hate black, I just don't like black Americans. I can't name one black American that I'm friends with. I'm only friends with blacks from the Caribbean. In my high school, race is the most talked about topic in our school, and racism is ten times worse. I've been called names and been beat up in my life by black Americans because of who I am.

And many Americans discriminate against Caribbeans, especially Hispanics, because of their language, or the way they present themselves. My history with them is not a history, but it is present, because I get harrassed everyday. If anything, Americans in general feel superior towards people from anywhere else. I don't know why, because there is nothing to be proud of.

And then to make matters worse, dark skinned blacks and brown skinned blacks ALWAYS HARP ON their European ancestry, and always want straight hair, and light eyes, and light hair, many un-African things. The black kids in my school stand for nothing. They want to be something they can't, and they always want the "red" girls as their girlfriend!
