peace,
i am a muslim brother from rome who was in kingston for 3 months in 1998. during my time there i experienced a level of spiritual awarness i never seen in other parts of the world. 15 years old yooth walks with his bible and like to reason about it! the jamaican muslim brothers and sisters i know are some of the strongest i ever met and so are some rastas and christians as well. i've seen a sincere interest in seeking the thruth and that is why islam is spreading so fast troughout the island. everyday i got the chance to reason with many people, males and females, young and old i as used to walk around downtown and i was some kind of curiosity item:-). i am aware islam got bad hype partly due to the unislamic behaviour of some so-called muslims, partly due to the interest to mystify and putdown the only true alternative to this unjust world order.
i would be honored to share my little knowledge about islam and answer questions (whitin my limits) or discuss any issue related to islam with the members of this board.

I am interested to know under what circumstances Isalm advocates violence, if any.

Also, Christinaity, Judaism, and Islam fall under the category of the Abraham tradition. Do Muslims believe they worship a different God from Christians and Jews (leaving out Jesus of course).

Finally, is it mentioned anywhere in the Koran that women must be veiled, or is that more of a CULTURAL practice rather than religious?

Sorry if my questions seem dumb, but I truly don't know much about Islam besides the pilars.

-the shiites differs from the sunnis (the vast majority of muslims in the world) basically for not recognizing the elected leaders that followed prophet muhammad (peace be upon him) but only these who directly come from the family of the prophet himself. there are other minor differencies but i would not say there's any kind of ancestral worshiping if not in the fact they commemorate certain particular episodes in the life (and death) of old time people.
-islam does not advocate violence but it aknowledge the necessity of fighting under particular circumstances: if muslims are oppressed in their own land they have the right to fight for their freedom and justice but they should follow a strict code and that should only be a defensive or liberating fight, never an aggressive one. even in that case only enemy soldiers could be fought and never civilians, crops cattle, etc.
-God is ONE, no matter how we call Him. all prophets were sent by Him including jesus (peace be upon him) who we love as a major prophet but don't consider the son of God.
-the indication in the qur'an is one of a modest dress code for both women and men. women are more exposed to sexual harasement because men are weaker and more driven by sex (in general). therefore it is a form of protection (not oppression) for the woman to cover herself.
how to cover is more a matter of regional custom as you can notice by observing muslim ladies from different countries.

Christians don't persecute any one or threaten others with death to become Christians. How do you explain the global persecution and mass murder of Christians in Indonesia, Sudan, Iran, Egypt, Yemen and all the other predominant Muslim countries? These Christians are 1% of the population, therefore couldn't possible oppress the Muslims. Muslims followers put a bounty on the head of any one who converted to Christianity. Why do Muslims hate Jews? Christianity is the only religions that don’t hate any group of people and teaches to turn the other cheek.
Christianity preaches forgiveness of sins through faith in Jesus Christ. How do Muslims achieve forgiveness of sins? We both agree that Jesus was born of a virgin and raised on the third day. Jesus was conceived not by man sperm, but by the Holy Spirit, which makes His blood sinless thus He’s the perfect unblemished lamb to redeem mankind. He is the first and only person to be resurrected and was seen by more than 500 for 40 day before ascended to heaven. He promises His followers to return the same way as He left.

are they're a lot of muslims in Kingston? because it suprises how little religous diversity I see in Jamaica despite the ethnic make up. Most east Indians don't practice hindu, the arabs don't generally practice Islam, the chinese??? I don't know what religion they practice. Everyone is christian, with a minority of rasta (which is a judeo-christian religion anyway).

And this would be adequately demonstrated by the fundamentalist Christian in the presidency in the US (Bush) who is responsible for the deaths of thousands of Muslims in Afghanistan and Iraq?

I'm sorry but if you check your history and your present day blood baths Christians have been as responsible for persecution and murder as any other group of blood thirsty religious humans have. to claim other wise would be lying. and to say those that did were not "true Christians™" (which we have heard often here) well them the same can be applied to the other guys, maybe the people your talking about aren't "true Muslims™".
