Borica Papi are you afraid of being black? If you had a choice of color, which one would it be my brother? Yes, it is true that the black and white races were created and some negative traits, sterotypes and beliefs were characterized racial line to make blacks' condition and social status appear logical. On the other hand, the concept of black united the Africans to oppose their subordinated position. Your belief in color-blindness make no sense because blacks were and are still being treated differently(even by some biologists). Are you going to deny that biology is also social construct too? My disagreement with you stems from your unwillingness to recognized the differnce between a social and biological interpretation of society. An interesting point that you overlooked is that science does not dictate which interpretatations of race will be accepted because of where the funding come from. The difference between a race concious approach and your biological approach lie within both principles and it is not guide by any determinate organizing principle. So, you have no basis from which to argue your preferencethat skin colah doan mean henyting henyways.

First off, let me say that I am not afraid of being any color because the skin pigmentation that so often serves as a marker for the supposed classification of race is not only a superficial physical trait but an entirely misleading one.

Let me show you a couple of images:



The two images share a commonality in that they depict Japanese women whose ancestors most likely have lived on the island of Hokkaido for many centuries. However, they are not of the same "race." The woman on the right is from the Ainu tribe of Japan. The Ainu are an indigenous people who lived on the island many centuries prior to the invasion by ancient Chinese and were ostracized for nearly all of their history. Very little, if any, mixing occurred between the Ainu and the rest of the Japanese. The kicker is that genetic and linguistic studies reveal that the Ainu descended from Indo-european "white" peoples. Yet the adaptation to the environs of the Japanese islands have shaped the appearance of the Ainu to resemble the people of asian descent that inhabit much of the rest of Japan.

Let me show you two more pictures.



One picture present above is an African tribesman and the other is not. Can you pick which is which? The image on the left is actually a tribesman from the indigenous "Negrito" people of Polynesia. The image on the right is an African tribesman from the Congo.

Genetic studies have revealed that the Negrito peoples share roots with other Asians that inhabit the region of the Southeastern Pacific rim and not with African peoples. Yet the adaptation to the environs of the Polynesia has shaped the appearance of the tribes that inhabit that region. Similarities in appearance in this case stem from adaptation rather than direct, blood relations.

If one were to designate the Ainu woman in the top set of pictures as belonging to the "asian" race or the Negrito tribesman of the second set of pictures as belonging to the "african" or "black" race then one would be in error. In fact, I hope this gives on inkling at the difficulty of defining the concept of "race" altogether.

I am just responding to the person who stated that if they walk into a bank and identify themselves as West Indian they will more likely get a loan than identifying as African American is fooling themselves. Trust me it does not matter where you are from once you are black you are just black.

a hell of a lot of people on here are obsessed with skin colour and i cant see it changing either!
