The best way to counteract false information that arises in a discussion is to supply the correct information. (On MarieK's point, if someone has an agenda, then we can point that agenda out, certainly. But it doesn't mean that we cannot acknowledge when that person says something that in fact may be true.)

Not everything negative is false, and as a nation, I think most Jamaicans are able to handle information about our warts as well as our beauty spots. I do happen to think that issues such as pervasive rentadreadism or lack of opportunity for educational advancement/jobs exist in Jamaica and can be traced to the country's economic condition. These issues do need airing, and I'm just suggesting we keep the discussions focussed on the issues rather than the posters.

Now, again, let us not confuse reality with misinformation about Jamaica. It is the SPINmeisters that put the wrong spin on the reality that *I* am rightfully questioning. False information fed over and over and over and over again, sooner or later is perceived as truth to some who don't know otherwise. This is dangerous.

as a jamaican, i have been brought up not to be wanton in my behaviour and even if i do slip between di cracks, i am not crass enuff to broadcast it...

being jamaican i do not make it a habit to visit say the old 42nd avenues of the US hellbent on certain types of behaviour and then use , say, the NYorkers website to tell everyone who would be interested in things new york that the city is one big hookers and blue movie extravaganza....

being jamaican, i may have been brought up in poverty construed circumstances but I have always been taught that class will always tell and the posts in that section tell me a lot....

On your first point britisha, i have NEVER on this board suggested that the negative things said about jamaica in those discussions at the time were untrue. what i tried to say then, and continue to say now, is that jamaica is not the sum of all its negative things, and that jamaica's "reality" includes good and bad. i left jamaica as a child, but i returned twice as an adult to live and work there with people from all walks of life. so i have my eyes open to the full scope of the country's reality.

i agree with your second point that uncorrected misinformation repeated often can take on the aura of truth. again, let us stop the misinformation with a presentation of facts and constructive discussion of issues.

evano, i do take your point. i know that there is hyperbole in many posts about MoBay and what may or may not exist there by way of "tourist" services. but me seh challenge people on the hyperbole part. people interested in New York ought not to be told that the city is one big hookers and blue movie extravaganza. but some may want to know that there are places where there are lots of hookers and blue movies. people can then avoid (or perhaps visit) those places as a result of getting that information.

Your words are so eloquently stated, down to earth, a great attempt to clear up confusion and call things as they are on this board. Thank you so much. I especially enjoyed reading about you. Now THAT is what a person who truly respects Jamaica and Jamaican people is about. I am much like you, but have never had the chance to demonstrate any of that here, as others continue to divert attention away from the genuineness of people like us. MG - there are a number of instances where members have corrected the poster only to be disrespected.

Fine if you so choose to solicit the services of a renta it place you in a great category, however, to go as far as to say our men rooks women with bags over their heads is a blatant disrespect to Jamaican women, had we said this about Euro or Amer women would it be so accepted.

What if I was to come out and say some rentas will tell a stupid American anyting to to get the chance to live here, there would be a flood of complaints and I no doubt would probably be cautioned.

Also insisting that we don't have access to birthcertificates is another disrespect, are you saying I bought mine

Also, many poor Jamicans don't have access to formal education, I wasn't rich (sadly, I am still not) however I am quite educated.

To suggest our society is lawless is also a disrespect.

What I can't understand si why are we being told to accept this.

I am sure many posters have seen instances where there are comments that were made and someone tried to correct such only to be ridiculed.

A few months back when one poster (a foreigner) used the board to further her clientele (soliciting work for beach workers a/k/a rentas) I thought that was the worst, however, this is the lowest of the low.

Alass mi done, wid dis, sadly, so are many people.

YOu have no idea the number fo people who ask me if what they read here is true.
