A strangled scream caught in her throat and she spun around to see Audley standing there, bare chested and wearing sweat pants. She glanced down at his feet and saw that they were bare. Incongruously, she began to giggle, but clapped her hand over her mouth to muffle the sounds. She felt like hugging him, relieved to see that he wasn’t a ghost and wanting the reassurance of touch that he was real. Impulsively she did so and his arms came about her in surprise.

“Yuh aright?” he asked. “Yuh laas?”

Michelle smiled and looked up at him, thinking he was such a dear, dear man. “I thought… it was just… oh never mind. I was on my way to the kitchen for some milk. Couldn’t sleep. Want some?”

They headed off toward the kitchen. “Milk a fi baby man,” Audley chided. “Drink some tea, mi sure say wi have all kind awn yah,” he stated, opening cupboards and looking unsuccessfully.

Michelle watched and then laughed. “You have no idea where anything is, do you?”

“How yuh mean man,” he replied abashed. “Mi jus nuh memba. It late an ting.”

Grinning triumphantly, he turned toward her with a fistful of bush and a tin in the other hand. “Seet deh! Milo and mint tea. Which one yuh want?”

Soon enough the brews were made and Audley suggested that they sit outside where it was a bit cooler and enjoy it.

“Yuh tink yuh madda miss yuh?” he asked after a time.

Michelle shrugged. “I guess, I’on know.”

“Or she a enjoy har freedom?” he asked knowingly. “Yuh nuh unda har foot nomo so she can come an go as she please.”

Michelle laughed out loud. The idea that her mom would consider ‘coming and going’ was just too weird to comtemplate. The only places that could have her mother coming and going would be the doctors office, the pharmacy, the supermarket and ocassionally a friend’s house. Michelle remembered suggesting to her mother that she get out and date. Her mother had been scandalized at the notion and had gone on at length about dating being a ‘now-a-days pickney ting’. Michelle sighed, if she knew her mother, she was cooped up in the small house, calling the health hotline every few minutes, eating and watching TV. Still, she reminded herself that it was time to give her mother a call and made a mental note to do so the next day.

“What was it like growing up with my mom? Growing up here?” she asked.

“Well it was like anyway else,” he said. “Life was good. We neva go widout food ofcourse. Mi always have good clothes an tings fi school.”

“What about friends?”

Audley chuckled. “Mama neva too eena de fren ting eno. Oodn have no pickney a come a de gate come call fi wi. If wi did waa fren, wi have fi kip dem a school an lef dem deh.”

“Did your Mom treat my mom the same way she treated you?” Michelle asked, watching him carefully out of the corner of her eye. She saw his shrug and the way he became pensive. He seemed to want to let the question go unanswered, but was at the same time forced to answer it.

“Mi come bout long afta yuh madda yuh know. Cawse mi hair kina stawt grey, no mean say mi dat ol. Yuh madda, Petal, she, well, she an mama neva si eye to eye pon tings. Mi did likkle so it was neva my place fi question tings, yuh undastan. Plus, it was jus normal fi mi. A guess when mi look back, mi can si say she did kina harda pon har yes, but mi tink a caw she a did gal pickney. An yuh haffi stricta when dem dem eno. Jus so dem no get eena trouble an dem ting deh.”

“The old double standard thing eh?” she mocked.

“Well yuh si, das de ting between wi an farina. Dem too lax man. How yuh a go have gal pickney a run up pon road same hours as bwoy pickney? Whappn if she get eena trouble? She no buil like bwoy pickney eno. Gal pickney no build fi stan dem kina trouble deh. An whappn if she get pregnant? Bwoy pickney can walk way an carry on wid im life, but wha bout har? She get lef wid de burden. Dem tings deh can ruin a gal pickney life man. Das why yuh haffi stricta wid dem.”

Michelle said nothing, knowing that her mother had not been unduly strict with her daughter, being too caught up with herself. Yet, Michelle knew it was not ‘laxness’ on her mother’s part that contributed to her daughter’s ‘trouble’. For a brief moment she thought of blurting it all out to Audley and the relief from saying it aloud to someone else made her open her mouth on the word. But he said, “Mi know say mama can come across a way. Yuh nuh fi tek it to hawt, y’hear? She jus have tings pon har mind. She unda nuff stress.”

Michelle snapped, “How long has she been under stress then? Since the day my mom was born? Cause from what I know, she’s been mean to my mom from day one! Why is that? And why is she focusing it on me now? I mean, if she did not want me here, why did she say I could stay here? I mean, I don’t even have to be here this long you know – I could go home tomorrow! I’ve seen the land. I’ve seen the house. It ain’t all that. I don’t have to deal with all this [censored]!”

“Hole awn deh! Hole awn,” Audley stared at her in surprise, caught unawares by her outburst. “A whe all dat come from? Cho man, nobadda spwile a nice night wid, wait, a cry yuh a cry?”

Michelle turned her head away and surepitiously wiped her cheek on her shoulder. Her sniff betrayed her though and his arm came up aroun her bony shoulder and pulled her into his side.

“Hush,” he said softly. “Mi know is not de vacation yuh did expeck. But wi wi mek it up before yuh stay up man. Mi a try book a likkle time off work so dat you, me, Nicey an de kids dem can go pon de North Coast an do all dem touris ting deh. Soun good to yuh?”

Michelle nodded, enormously comfortable and suddenly sleepy. She snuggled closer under Audley’s armpit and murmured, “What about Dean? Will he come too? And your mom?”

Audley laughed quietly. “Mama? No man. She have nuff tings fi a deal wid right now. Dean? Who knows.”

Nicey was sated and Dean was already drifting off to sleep. She trailed her hand over the sleek smoothness of his skin, enjoying the firm skin and muscles. He smiled at her drowsily.

“Yuh nah gwan before daddy ketch yuh?”

Nicey grimaced. She wanted to fall asleep right here, right where she’d had to stuff her nightdress into her mouth so as not to allow the sounds of her screams to alert anyone else to the pleasures she was experiencing. She wanted to nestle into Dean’s back, to fall asleep with the scent of him and them together in her nostrils. She did not want to go back to Audley’s snoring and scratchings.

But Dean was right, she needed to leave before she was caught and everything came to ahead. For a moment there, they’d thought they were about to be found out. Entangled, they’d heard voices but as they’d stilled and strained to listen, it had drifted off into nothing. Too caught up in each other, neither had been inclined to check. Now she sat up in bed and swung her legs over the side, gazing wryly at Dean who was already asleep. He was his father’s son alright. Closing the door softly behind her, she left the room.
