Chapter XXIV

Audley was true to his word. He booked time off from work and told them at the dinner table that he wanted them as a family to show off the island to Michelle. Aunt Myrtle lifted an eyebrow but said nothing, Nicey snorted and Dean smiled. Sheldon and Ryan, not fully understanding what was entailed in showing someone the island, sensed that outings were involved so were excited enough for everyone. Michelle had felt embarrassed at Audley’s announcement and had avoided Nicey’s glare and Aunt Myrtle’s narrowed gaze. She’d however, sought out Dean’s and was mollified in seeing his smile. Maybe he would come along at some point. Maybe they could get to spend some time together. Michelle had tossed a wry smile to Audley who’d grinned back, suddenly boyish and carefree.

The first trip was planned for Thursday. Nicey packed lunches and grumbled the whole time. Michelle, feeling somewhat responsible, had offered to help and was summarily dismissed. She’d helped with the children though; ensuring that they were washed properly and neatly turned out and had the appropriate swimwear. Michelle had inquired as to sunscreen and Nicey had laughed, genuinely amused. Sunscreen? Fi wha? The question though, had had the amazing effect of mellowing out Nicey and Michelle had not pushed further, happy for small mercies. Audley had strutted through the house, excited but feigning indifference. Dean would be coming along too while Aunt Myrtle would remain at the house. It had the makings of a perfect day.

The journey was good. Soft reggae thrummed from the CD player and Nicey and Audley spoke in hushed cordial tones. Sheldon and Ryan had their fusses, being so closely pressed against each other it was inevitable. But Michelle had come prepared, and when their spats and fidgeting escalated, she would slip them candies, that a look told her was their secret. Over their heads, Dean raised his eyebrow at her and she smiled back conspiratorially.

“Been there lots of time I guess, eh?” she asked as the kids munched away on the candy.

“Dunn’s Riva?” he laughed. “One or two time.”

“Guess you swim really well too,” she grimaced.

“Yuh cyaa swim?” his laugh was openly mocking.

“Not very well,” she owned. “But I know how to float.”

His burst of laughter caused Audley to glance up to the rearview mirror and Nicey to turn sharply.

“Whagwan back deh?” she demanded.

Sheldon and Ryan stuffed the candy into their cheeks and gazed wide-eyed at the mother. She however, was looking from Michelle to Dean with suspicion. Michelle glanced over at Dean and noticed the look he cast his stepmother. Michelle was puzzled. It was a look she recognized but could not place.

The children muttered, “Nutn,” and their mother glancing at them before returning her searching look at Dean and Michelle, said nothing before turning back in her seat. The amiable atmosphere in the Jeep had undergone an almost imperceptible change – Audley and the children and perhaps Dean were unaware. But Michelle could sense the change and from the stiffness of Nicey’s nape and she could tell that Nicey was in the know.

Michelle was grateful when Audley called out, “Seet deh!” and knew they were there. She hopped out of the jeep, more eager than the children to get out, itching in anticipation of shedding her shorts T-shirt and reveling in nothing but her bikini. She’d had reservations about packing it, thinking that she should pack something a bit more modest, something that would be fitting for an expectant mom. But Lisa had gone shopping with her and had talked her into trying on the tiny burnt orange coloured two-piece. Lisa wasn’t to know of the pregnancy, Lisa wouldn’t know of her fear that she’d be showing in a few months. And Michelle had allowed Lisa’s enthusiasm to infect her and she’d bought the bikini and in trying it on again last night, she’d seen that it looked almost as it had when she’d tried it on two months prior. Was there a tiny bump where her flat stomach used to be? Were her size 32B breasts now a C? It had all seem inconsequential somehow. No one here had ever seen her breasts before, or her stomach. They weren’t to know. A tiny voice had said, Aunt Myrtle knew. And she’d scoffed back, Aunt Myrtle wasn’t going to be there.

Now she emerged from the change rooms feeling slightly self-conscious in her bikini. The children were ready to climb the falls, tugging at their father who waited for Nicey to come out. Audley glanced at Michelle and smiled. She smiled back, thankful for his presence. She looked about for Dean and saw him standing a way off already surrounded by several women. She was immediately resentful. Nicey came out then, wearing an emerald blue bathing suit that would’ve been the picture of modesty if not for the super high thigh cut and the low back. Her corners of her mouth lifted for Audley but her eyes sought out Dean. Michelle watched Nicey’s look change - her lips curling down and her eyes narrowing. Michelle glanced over to where Dean was the center of attention and back to Nicey’s anger. For there was no doubt about it, Nicey was angry. Michelle was intrigued. Her attention was cut off though, when the children ran over and grabbed her arms shouting that they wanted to climb the falls. Their screams of excitement wrestled their mother’s attention away from Dean and his entourage and Audley walked over, admiringly looking at Nicey and Michelle.

“Bwoy, a how mi lucky so?” he beamed.

Nicey rolled her eyes at him and handed him her bag. “Go put dem yah eena de cyar or supm!” she snapped.

“So wait, meeda like fi change to eno,” he chided.

“Den anybady a stop yuh?” she mocked. Turning to the kids who were attempting to drag Michelle along, she snapped, “Oonuu stop de blastid noise eena mi aisehole! Galang like oonuu nuh have no brawtupsy!”

Dean sauntered over, his bare chest tempting Michelle to run her hands over it while his muscular thighs invited her where she shouldn’t go. He smiled at her and ignoring Audley and Nicey he said, “Yuh waa come fi a walk? Mi wi show yuh roun…” He looked her up and down and nodded once but said nothing. Michelle looked away quickly feeling his approval warming her more than the sun was. She tried to remind herself that she was pregnant, but the setting was not having it. She glanced about at the beauty of the place, the air of fun and freedom that was here and allowed it to seduce her. Looking back boldy at Dean she nodded and smiled. The children hung onto her arms their energy infecting her, their cries slightly muted as they were mindful of their mother. Nicey stalked over.

“So whe oonuu a go?” she demanded, staring at them balefully.

“Why?” Dean taunted.

Nicey said nothing and Michelle looked from one to the other and wondered if something else was at play here.

“Fine,” Nicey snapped, her voice tinged with hurt. “Tek dem wid oonuu den,” she said, pushing the children who did not need to be pushed.

Dean shrugged. Michelle said, “C’mon guys. Let’s see how high up we can go!” and ran off while they ran after her, squealing in excitement. Dean turned to follow but Nicey’s arm held him back.

“A whe yuh tink yuh a do?” she hissed.

“Why?” he smirked.

Nicey glared at him. “Jus memba say a yuh cousin,” she said forcefully.

“Yeah,” he rejoined. “An yu a mi step-madda.”

He walked off with her calling, “Whe dat supposed to mean?”

The day was easy. They climbed the falls, at least, Dean and Audley did. Michelle found the combination of rocks and water to be uncertain so, along with the children, she joined the chain. Nicey refused to get her hair wet and so remained on the beach scowling. Later they explored the park and Michelle fell inlove with the flora. The lushness of the trees and shrubbery and the vibrancy of the flowers brought tears to her eyes. How often had her mother said in regard to the oft-praised springtime of Canada, “Cho, oonuu tink say dis nice? Oonuu nuh si si nice yet. Nutn sweeta, smell sweeta, look sweeta or mek yuh feel sweeta dan flowas a Jamaica. Nutn!” And now Michelle had been able to see that this was indeed so. She suddenly missed her mother urgently and her stomach roiled. Michelle jumped when a hand gripped her upper arm. It was Dean.

“Yuh aright?” he asked.

“Yeah,” she muttered, avoiding eye contact. She blinked and glanced about for Sheldon and Ryan.

“Oh, dem gawn eat lunch wid dem madda,” he said “Yuh nuh hungry?”

The idea of food was violently rejected by her stomach and she involuntarily pressed her hand to it.

“Yuh sure yuh aright?” he asked, his eyes on her stomach. Michelle dropped her hand, his eyes remained trained.

“Of course,” she laughed nervously. “Why do you keep asking?”

He said nothing and reached out to touch her stomach. Michelle was sure she could feel the fetus jump.

“Mi like yuh belly,” he murmured. “Not too flat. Soft and smooth.” His hand rubbed her stomach lightly and Michelle was sure her knees would give way at any minute but she was powerless to stop him. Her eyes flicked about nervously, looking for ones that would know that they shouldn’t be standing like this, two cousins, too close and touching. But they were alone. It was hurricane season after all. And though many said they were getting off lightly this year, many had taken the precaution of staying indoors even on days when there was no rain. The sun had disappeared again and the grey skies and stillness added to the effect of Dean’s touch. Michelle’s breathing was irregular and glancing sideways at him and his bare chest and how he was framed by the leaves and flowers of the hibiscus made her think that they were in a dream and it would be okay to touch him in turn. So she let her fingers travel over his chest, touching lightly the contours of his chest and encircling the areola. His sudden in drawn breath let Michelle knew she’d hit a sensitive spot and she bit her lip but did not remove her hand. Neither did he. In fact, his fingers trailed down over her stomach and teased the top of her bikini. She knew what he was going to do and she knew she should stop him but she did not want to. His fingers edged inside and pressed lightly at first against her pubic mound, before going lower.

Michelle was gasping, her legs parted and braced. She tilted her hips and her fingers were no longer trailing over his beautiful chest but were instead digging into his shoulders as she hung on for dear life. And then he touched the place that only Earl had ever touched and Michelle whimpered. His touch was experienced: light and firm. Every movement drawing her closer as though with invisible strings. Before she knew it, she was pressed up against him, her pelvis just below his, his arousal pressing into her stomach. He was saying nothing, but his mouth opened and closed against the side of her forehead, while her mouth remained opened in ecstasy against his throat. He was using both hands now, no longer nursing but attempting to push the tight bikini down. And Michelle was holding onto his chest, marveling at the musk that emanated from him, the foliage about them and the warmth of the air and the stillness of everything. The moment could not be more perfect until they heard the loud voices of tourists coming their way. Reluctantly he slipped his hands out of her pants but Michelle was not ready to let go. She couldn’t. Her legs were still unsure. By some silent acknowledgment, the both faced the thick profusion of flowers and shrubbery, they backs to the path.

“Hey there! Hey, I’m talking to you!”

Someone was calling to them and Michelle lowered her head and turned it away from Dean. He turned in annoyance at the intrusion and saw an overweight white man wearing a Speedo and too much pale skin along with three similar appointed women pointing at them.

“Hey,” he said. “Are you the guides around here? Why are you standing over there? We need help. We need to find our way back. Well, don’t just stand there like f___ dummys! Come take us to our rooms!”

Michelle groaned inwardly and her hands fell away from Dean’s shoulders. Tourists. They were as effective as a bucket of icy water. The abrasive demands reminded her that not only was she getting too intimate a knowledge of her cousin, but that she was pregnant and worse, a pregnant tourist!

“Well are you coming or what?” the fat man snapped. The women next to him tittered up their annoyance at Dean’s reluctance to jump.

“Well baws, yuh waa si, a doah work fi dis side yuh nuh?”

“What? What are you saying? You’re supposed to speak properly English!” the fat man snapped. One his companions joined, “Oh my God! You mean he can’t even converse with us? I told you we should’ve gone to St. Lucia instead!”

“Look, we don’t have all f___ day to stand out here while you decide if you’re going to take us back to our rooms, you know! What about her? Does she speak any f__ English? God, this is such a f___ backwards place! F____ thirdworld f___ country!”

Michelle spun around and smiled at them sweetly. “He’s with me,” she said.

“You American?” the fat man asked, eyeing her up and down and glancing from one to the other. “Why’re you hanging out out here with him?”

“He was directing me?” Michelle suggested.

The women stared at Michelle and Dean knowingly.

“Well he can direct us too!” the fat man said. “I’m getting f___ hungry! So he can lead us all back to our rooms! And then you and him can do whatever the f__ you want!”

Michelle glanced up at Dean whose fists were clenched and whose face was stoney. She didn’t want a scene and she was irrationally embarrassed by the tourists’ behaviour.

“Do you know how to direct them?” she asked under her breath.

Dean said nothing for a moment as he evidently struggled with stalking over to the fat man and driving the wind from his big belly. Finally though, he said, “Tell dem fi go dung so, go chroo de path – is a short cut – an when dem come out pon de road dem wi si some house an ting. Tell dem fi jus go chroo de gate dem an walk rouna back. Tell dem say de hotel back on to it an dem wi get de in half de time if dem tek dah way deh.”

Michelle eyed him suspiciously and would’ve demurred if the fat man hadn’t said, “Are you going to hurry the f__ up or what? I can get you fired you know!”

She gave them the directions. As they moved off, she heard one of he women say in a voice meant to be overheard, “That’s all they’re good for. Coming here and fooling around with the natives. Disgusting.”

Another rejoined, “Did you see his legs, those arms and that chest? I would fool around with him anyday!”

Michelle and Dean watched them walk off down the path. “So where are they going really,” she asked.

“Somewhe whe dem a go sorry fi find.”

No Dean don't work there the people just assumed he did and so him sheg dem wid the wrong directions.
