Michelle clutched the handle of her wheelie and was distantly aware that the strap that rested between her breasts was restricting her breathing. She did nothing about it but stared at the woman who came out to stand in surveillance.

“So,” she said and nothing more. She stood with her arms folded, her strong shoulders resting proprietarily on the jamb. They studied each other. Michelle knew this woman, who already appeared so adversarial, saw a tall too skinny dark skinned girl, who slumped her shoulders to hide her height and whose difficulty in making eye contact hid a deficiency of self-assertion. What Michelle saw was a woman, who stared hard, through eyes that perpetually squinted, even within the shade. The woman was once a beauty, but though her age was not great, her hardness was and it had blunted her good looks causing her to appear cold and unfeeling more manly and not in the least bit feminine. This woman was younger than her mother, Michelle observed, but just as old somehow. There was no joy to her even though her lips finally parted to show her teeth.

She jerked her head sharply to indicate that Michelle should follow and Michelle did not once think of disobeying.

At the top concrete step, the wheel of Michelle’s luggage, snagged on the cracked concrete and it caused her to stumble. The woman cast her a derisive glance and Michelle lifted the thing and carried it over the verandah and the threshold.

Inside, darkness greeted her. She blinked rapidly but she had to wait the few seconds it took for her eyes to adjust. Then she made out the woman standing at a doorway that led off the narrow hallway.

“In here,” she said shortly and Michelle walked toward her, still carrying her wheelie. She dared not drag it across the highly polished wood flooring and she’d not been invited to let it rest by the door.

The doorway was narrow and the woman made no attempt to make way for Michelle, yet it was obvious that she expected Michelle to bypass her and enter the room. Michelle squeezed by and the woman kissed her teeth.

Michelle stopped short just inside the room, for she was faced with a most curious sight. The room appeared to be from another time. The windows were high and narrow and she could tell that they were windows because of the muted glare that fought to shine through the thick brocaded curtains that hung from ceiling to floor. The walls of the room, what little she was able to see, was covered by a very dark green patterned wallpaper. The countless number of framed pictures that were hung obscured most of the walls’ colour, however. And the pictures, Michelle saw, were of various white folk.

Michelle was confused. Her Mom had never once said Myrtle was white? So who…? Michelle squinted across at the pictures and saw that they were of, royalty? Holly heck, the 20 or 30 pictures that hung on the walls, were of the kings and queens of, England maybe? Their dress proclaimed their era as that of some long ago time and they stern expressions worn by both the male and female subjects made them all a humourless lot.

Her eyes were drawn from the myriad of heavy gilded pictures to the many dark wooden furniture that peppered the room. Michelle drew a breath at the sumptuousness of the furnishings. Even in the dim light, she could see their sheen, the details of their carvature, the gilding and the satin finishes. Michelle wanted so badly trace her fingers over everything – the furnishings, the brocaded window coverings, the heavy pictures, the thick oriental rugs that were strategically placed, the glossy mahogany floor. Her mind moved her and she advanced further into the room, her arm already outstretched, but she was stopped in her tracks by a voice that said sharply, “Doah touch nutn!”

The voice was came from behind a tall, almost black piece of furniture that guarded the far corner of the room. She choked back a scream, suddenly reminded of Count Dracula and creaking, upstanding coffins, shadows and music boxes. She wanted to back up but her feet were rooted and her arms trembled as they held onto her luggage. She watched in fascination as the shadow grew behind the tall chest, expanded to darken even further the dreary pictures, the satin seats, before shrinking sharply into a black covered being that moved slowly and deliberately into the center of the room and into the light of the doorway.

“So yuh come,” she said. And Michelle prayed that she would not faint, that now, of all her 17+ years on this earth, would not be the first time that she would lose consciousness from the pure fear that washed up and over her.

She drew close, her pace deliberate, and all the while she glared penetratingly at Michelle. Michelle had the curious need to drop her gaze, but she managed to hold them up and studied the woman in return.



The woman, Aunt Myrtle, was dressed like a Spanish senorita, Michelle guessed, though her very age, not to mention the cultural climate, made the outfit a tad ridiculous. She wore a long black flowing skirt that had a three-tiered ruffle. A-top the skirt, she had a blood red cumberband that was wrapped several times around her tiny waist with the fringed ends left to hang from it. Her blouse was a white ruffled peasant top, the wide neck elasticized as was the short sleeves that accented her thin arms. Her still relatively smooth neck was bare although two long black beaded earrings dangled on either side of its thinness.

She was a small woman, maybe 5’ if one was generous, but she was by no means diminished. Michelle knew she was staring but could not look away. The woman was beautiful. Her features were finely drawn, thin lips were pursed tightly beneath a small nose; large cold dark eyes were framed by winged brows and tiny lines. And her grey hair was drawn back to reveal her widow’s peak. Her dark skin was tightly drawn over her high cheekbones and a square chin.

Michelle was overwhelmed. She was taller than Aunt Myrtle by 10 inches easily, but the woman scared her. She gulped and searched frantically for something to say. Aunt Myrtle broke the silence first.

“Gwan,” she said and her word brooked no refusal. So Michelle turned to leave, but stopped when she realised belatedly that Aunt Myrtle spoke to the woman who had stood silently at the door. Michelle turned back to Aunt Myrtle.

“So,” Aunt Myrtle drawled. “Yuh a de spawn.” She cleared her throat dismissively but did not turn away. Michelle swallowed hard and then said, “Hi.”

Aunt Myrtle raised one eyebrow in derision and then said, “Hi,” in perfect mimicry. Michelle already felt like crying. “That’s all yuh have fi say? ‘Hi’? No tell mi say yuh is as tick as yuh mumma. A hope not eno. Cause mi spen enough years a tek care a dat deh one deh, foofah head did hawda dan de dryes cuknat. No sah. So if yuh is as fool as she, yuh can tun right back an galang whe yuh come fram, yuh hear me?”

“And what exactly should I say to that?” Michelle wondered. “How should I react? She’s just insulted my mother, she’s just totally dissed me. I should turn back. I should go sit at the airport and wait for the next flight out. I should. I should! But what will Mom say? If she could handle all this, then I have to be able to as well. God, Mom. Why couldn’t you have found somewhere else for me to stay? Didn’t you have any friends? What about other relatives? Damn.”

“Hm,” Aunt Myrtle snorted, when Michelle said nothing. “If it wasn fi de likkle ‘Hi’ mi ooda tink say yuh dumb. How long yuh a go deh yah fah?”

“Uh, the ticket, it’s open. I, uh, have to be back for University.”

“University, eh? Well. Yuh mussi did get dat fram yuh puppa. So whe yuh a go do, tan up deh so all day? Gwan mek Nicey show yuh whe fi put yuh sitn dem.”

Michelle opened her mouth to thank Aunt Myrtle, but she’d already turned away, fussing at the spotless furnishings, moving to the heavy drapes to adjust their already immaculate folds. Michelle backed out of the room and into the narrow hallway. She turned right and moved into the gloomy interior in search of Nicey.

She found Nicey in a dark dinghy back room. The room appeared to have been an afterthought. Nowhere in it’s spareness, did it complement or resembled the lushness of the other rooms that Michelle had glimpsed on her way down the narrow hallway. She entered the room and decided to rest her luggage by the door. Nicey stood by the narrow bed and watched her. Michelle offered a tentative smile.

“I guess you know already, but, well, I’m Michelle. And I guess you’re Nicey.”

Nicey rolled her eyes.

“Yuh nuh need fi tell me who I be. And yuh nuh need fi tell mi who yuh is. Mi can seet. Yuh a yuh madda pickney. An yuh come fi dead lef,” She made to move by Michelle, but Michelle’s thinly tethered control snapped and her hand reached out to clasp Nicey’s arm. The movement startled Nicey and the pause gave Michelle the opening to continue.
