Boucheron is so ****** expensive that I'm always buying it at the duty free shop or those touristy places in Ja which surprisinlgy are cheaper than the department stores here. I used to wear Chanel #5 and Paloma Picasso for years but I'm hooked on this one now.

Chapter VII

Nicey adjusted the front seat, levering it back much further than it needed to be. Michelle gritted her teeth and adjusted her legs. She avoided the taunting glances that Nicey threw her through the side mirrors.

Outside the scenery fled by at a mad gallop, colliding and tumbling from them, in a crazed hurry to get away from Audley and his frenetic driving. Michelle was thankful that she’d taken a Gravol for she was sure that if she hadn’t, Nicey would not be wearing that self-satisfied smirk, and would in stead be covered in vomitus.

The roads were alternately wide and narrow, paved and not. Potholes were deep, jagged, dusty and bone jarring. Audley climbed the curbs, the few times there were, and Michelle was hard-pressed not to ask him if thought they were mountains to be conquered. She was relieved that there were few so pedestrians.

She could distinguish very little about the neighbourhood or the landscape except for the fact that she’d not seen another house like Aunt Myrtle’s. For she’d taken the time to get a better look at the house before she’d left.

At first glance the house seemed quite ordinary though somewhat dark for the Jamaican landscape. It was a single-storey house with a sharply angled roof and a straight rail-less verandah. The house was raised about a foot off the hard-packed earth. And the darkness she beneath the house seemed alive somehow. Michelle, who was not given to fanciful thoughts, had the sudden idea that she was been beckoned by the darkness; that it would tell her secrets that her mother guarded, that caused her to rock and grow closed-mouthed. It would tell her, Michelle thought, why Aunt Myrtle hated her mother so and why Aunt Myrtle hated her, when they’d never even met, never even spoken. The darkness, she felt, could shed so much light, if she would just go closer…

Nicey’s harsh jarring voice had jerked her back, cause her to flush self-consciously. And she’d grimaced at the dust that invaded her nostrils and pushed past her lips. She’d turned her back on the house, on the pretext of getting into the jeep, but she knew she’d sought to banish the thoughts that had crowded her mind with such convincing credulity.

Now she tried to make small talk. “So, that house that you guys live in, how old is it?”

“Why?” Nicey sneered. “Yuh want it to?”

“Lawd Nicey,” Audley said.

When he did not continue, Michelle did. “I don’t see any other houses like it around here, so I was just curious.”

“Nah man, it ol yes. Long time house dat. Strang. One time, alla disya lan yah did belong to wi fambly. Mama granfawda, was a big time busha. Anyway, ol time tory dat. Im sell awf nuff a de lan, aldoa wi still have plenty. But den fi im dawta, mama madda, she sell off more. Is a wonda wi lef wid anyting. She lef whe she did ha to Aunt Mary an Mama.”

“What about my grandma?”

“Bo cooya bou ‘grandma’. Yuh nat even did know har!” Nicey snarled angrily.

“What difference does that make?” Michelle snapped back. She asked the question again of Audley.

“Well,” he said, sounding uncomfortable. “Is not really my place fi say eno…”

“Why not?” she demanded. “What’s the big secret? I know she was Aunt Myrtle’s and Aunt Mary’s sister. Yet, when she died, my mom got nothing. She had to go live with your mom. Why didn’t her mother leave her anything?”

“Like ah say, is not my place fi say,” Audley muttered, then said louder, relief evident in his voice, “Wi deh yah. Nicey, mi wi come wid yuh come say hi to de one tiefing Lloydie.” Nicey, looking startled, climbed out of the vehicle and followed an eagerly stepping Audley. From the back seat Michelle watched them leave, the slight queasiness of her stomach forgotten. There was more to this...saga than they would have her believe.
