Chapter XXV

There was a perceptible change between Dean and Michelle from that day on. Her awareness of him grew exponentially and he was impatient for the inevitable conquering. The circled each other, feinting and parrying. Testing to see how close they could get and how soon. But Nicey made it difficult. She could sense that something was up something had happened at the falls. She’d demanded of Dean the truth and he’d brushed her off telling her not to be foolish – Michelle was his cousin and she was too skinny for his taste. But Nicey was not convinced. The air about the young people was charged and she knew that if she felt it, then too, so must Audley and Aunt Myrtle.

Aunt Myrtle had bigger worries than whom her grandson was bedding, if only for the moment. She was in danger of losing everything she’d worked so hard for. There was a fight coming and Aunt Myrtle would be ready. She was too old to fail now. She was done with losing. Had been for over fifty years.

“Mama, time a come now. Yuh waa mi fi tek yuh to de lawya office?” Audley asked Myrtle early the next week. Aunt Myrtle was sitting in the dead-white-people room, her skirt blood red and long, her shirt blindingly white even in the dark room. She had been reading again, but this time, there were papers strewn about, on her lap and the chaise lounge. At Audley’s approach, she gathered up the papers calmly and indicated that he should sit. He sat across from her on the skinny hard chair.

“Time fi lawya pass,” she said flatly. “We haffi do dis fi wi way.”

“Mi nuh like when yuh talk dem way deh eno,” Audley groused. “Not because but we should still try fi do tings de right and proper way.”

“Whe yuh know bout right and proper? Yuh suppose to be de man eena dis house an whe yuh a do? Every day yuh git up gawn a work an come een, nyam food an gaa yuh bed. Yuh tink dat a any way fi govern a house?”

“Mama whe yuh a talk bout?” Audley was genuinely puzzled.

“No worry bout ie. As wid everyting else, mi wi tek care a ie. Whe Dean deh?”

“Yuh know how hawd mi try fi kip Dean from de wrong people dem,” Audley said urgently. “A nuff time im coulda get eena trouble wid de police, probably all end up eena jail. A nuff man mi haffi bribe an reason wid fi no mek im go dah way deh. Now when it finally look like say im might dun wid de badness, yuh a use him.”

“Use him?” Aunt Myrtle’s voice rose sharple. “Yuh a accuse me of using mi grandson?”

“Mama yuh know whe mi mean…”

“Watch yuh mout,” Aunt Myrtle warned. “An gwan. If yuh si Dean, sen im come to me an no worry bout whe yuh cyaa control.”

“Mama…”

Aunt Myrtle flicked her wrist and Audley moved off in irritation. It was so unsettling when his mother sometimes refused to treat him like the man he was. Why did she insist on doing everything her own way? Why must she keep having these secret meetings with Dean and then sending him out? And what did she mean by he should govern his house? [censored], it wasn’t even his house. Yes, it would eventually become his when she died – and Audley said a quick prayer of ‘God Forgive Me’ – but there was no evidence that she would be dying anytime soon. She’d outlived her sisters and her parents. It was not impossible that she would outlive her son and even her grandson. Because Audley was sure that whatever it was that Aunt Myrtle wanted Dean to do would only end badly, especially for Dean.

Nicey was angry and frustrated. She wanted to be with Dean. She’d been trying to get together with him for days now and one thing after the other kept getting in the way. It all had to stop. He had to stand still, long enough so that she could get what she needed. She was so tired. Tired of trying to keep the house running so that Aunt Myrtle would have less to frown about. Tired of dodging Audley’s advances. And tired of standing between Dean and Michelle. For Nicey knew without doubt that Dean and Michelle were into each other.

It had been two nights ago, she’d put the kids to bed, made sure Aunt Myrtle was asleep, sidestepped Audley’s advances until he too fell asleep and then exhausted, she’d stumbled to Dean’s room. But he wasn’t there. She knew he was home. She’d heard him come in and spoken to him, though briefly. Dean, since the falls, had had very little time to even be pleasant to her. But Nicey was determined to put an end to all that. She was damned if he would use her and then discard her because some skinny [censored] from foreign was twitching her bony [censored] at him. He had to be made to see sense. He couldn’t be with Michelle. Not even once. She was his cousin. If Aunt Myrtle found out, there would be hell to pay. Nicey knew that she had more sense and maturity to be with Dean. She knew what the repercussions could be and she’d always made sure to be discreet. Could he expect the same of Michelle? Those foreigners were known for their laxness. She wouldn’t care if Dean got into trouble. She’d be long gone leaving him to deal with it.

So Nicey searched the rooms of the rambling house. She searched silently, sidestepping creaking flooring and quietly opening doors. She’d poked her head in and called out softly, “Dean?” but she received no response. The thought had crossed her mind to check Michelle’s room, and knowing that the lock on the door was broken and chosen not to knock. Pushing the door in abruptly she’d stepped inside, her mind expecting the worse, her heart begging to see nothing. Nicey had stood shaking, knowing she’d finally given into what her mind had been telling her all along, Dean and Michelle were involved. Staring at the empty room that had no corners for hiding, she’d blinked at the deserted bed and her sense of urgency had increased.

She became less concerned with being quiet. She was almost stomping now, going back through the rooms, throwing the doors open, flicking on light switches. But they weren’t in any of the rooms. Confused, she’d stood in the hallway, looking left and right and not knowing where else to go.

Michelle’s head rested on Dean’s shoulder and her heart was hammering. Her eyes were closed and her mouth was open with her breathing ragged. Dean whispered down to her, “Yuh aright?”

Michelle licked her dry lips and nodded slightly. She swallowed, trying to get the moisture back. Then she groaned. Dean murmured, “Sorry.”

Michelle opened her eyes slightly but pressed them shut almost as quickly. The streetlights going by were contributing to her nausea and the bumps from the road were finishing the job. She suppressed a moan and Dean said above her head, “A de wata? A wha a cause yuh fi sick so?”

Michelle struggled to sit up and anchored her head on her fist.

“I don’t know what it is,” she finally murmured, the lie almost sticking in her throat. “I’m sorry it ruined our evening.”

“Is aright,” he smiled over. “We can always try again.”

Michelle put her head back, careful to keep her eyes closed. Her nausea was abating slightly but it was too late to retrieve the night. He’d invited her out for a drive and she’d been eager to go, to finally be with him and out from under Nicey’s laser stares. He would take her to a club, he’d said and Michelle had throbbed with excitement, eager for the moment when he’d press her to him and she could feel him again. But they hadn’t gone far when she’d begun to feel her stomach shift and clench and then spin with opinion. It did not take kindly to the potholes and the uneven terrain. The speed was definitely a no-no. And she’d got sick again, pounding on the door because she didn’t trust her mouth to ask that he pull over. He’d stared at her in puzzlement as she did the unsexiest of things – throw up. And she’d not cared, then. All Michelle had wanted was to just feel normal.

The idea though, had taken root in her mind that her time for normalcy had long past. She was pregnant. She was going to have a baby. She’d not yet told her mother and the father of her child had made his position violently clear. She was vacationing with her mother’s family – for try as Michelle might, she could not see them as being her own. She was attracted to her cousin that did not feel like her cousin – not that she had any experience for what the feelings toward a cousin should be. But she knew what she felt for him was not normal. It was strong and she was willing to give into it. But it was wrong, she was sure and yet she did not care. That was not normal.

Michelle turned her head and watched his profile as he drove his father’s Jeep back to the house. She enjoyed the way the lights and the shadows danced against his smoothly complected skin. She watched his full lips and the tip of his nose. She felt lost in the shadows that were drawn by his eyelashes.

He glanced over at her and found her studing him. “Yuh wi feel betta soon,” he promised. “And den…” his sexy smile said it all. Michelle felt a warm gush run through her and wondered how it was that she could be fighting nausea and still be aroused. That was not normal either.

The Jeep was gone. Nicey stood at the window staring out at the spot where Audley always parked. That’s what they’d done. They’d taken the Jeep and left. Where had they gone? What were they doing? Was Dean now playing tour guide? Nicey clenched her fist; her short nails dug into her palms. That [censored]. Nicey knew she would be trouble. From the moment she’d seen the skinny black [censored] standing out in the yard, trying to look innocent, Nicey had known.

It hadn’t taken Michelle long, Nicey thought, to move in for what she wanted. It was obvious that she not only wanted the house that Mary left – although she was supposedly surveying it for her mother – (was she any [censored] surveyor anyway?) but she wanted more. But she hadn’t bargained for Myrtle, had she? She wasn’t to know that Myrtle held onto what was hers with a fist tighter than God’s. And much as Nicey had no pardon for Myrtle, Nicey found that she was thankful for Myrtle’s hardness and meanness, that Myrtle would not be blinded by Michelle’s foreignness. So the little slut had moved on now, to Dean. Nicey wanted to be wrong; she wanted Dean to remember that he and Michelle were cousins and that there was a line he couldn’t cross. But her hope was growing dim.

Suddenly the yard grew bright and Nicey shrank back behind the curtains. They were here. With teeth clenched and her heart beating fast, she watched them park and turn off the headlights and then the vehicle.

“Well, we deh yah,” Dean said, now impatient to go to bed and annoyed that the night had been a bust. Still he hid his impatience and smiled at Michelle. Her return smile was rueful and she gingerly undid her seatbelt, unwilling to give her stomach another reason for protesting, and got out of the Jeep. Dean jumped out and came around her side. He stood over her, his arms became barriers, framing her against the side of the Jeep. Michelle did not shrink back and she could feel her nipples hardening at his proximity. Probably sensing them, he reached out and ran his thumb over her left nipple and smiled when she gasped.

“Yuh like dat eh?”

Michelle did not reply. Instead she forced her hands behind her and used her bottom to press them against the Jeeps cool paneling. She was trembling and Dean approved. Maybe she was feeling better, maybe he could- the porch light flooded the yard and the suddenness of it made him jump back. They blinked furiously at the brightness, their hands coming up to sheild their eyes. Then Michelle, frightened, made her way quickly indoors. Dean, feeling juvenile for having jumped so, forced a saunter and followed.

Neither noticed Nicey who’d pressed back into the corner of the dark room. And neither did they notice the shift of the curtains from room abutting.

Chapter XXVI


That had been two nights ago. Nicey had lain in wait for Dean, but his grandmother had summoned him and when he finally came to the room, he’d been in no mood to deal with her questions or her advances. She’d left him with threats: she would not be played; there would be no dolly-house thing between him and Michelle; if he knew what was good for him- He’d slammed his door in her face, almost knocking her backwards. Nicey had stood there, shocked and afraid. He’d never been like that with her before. Even when he was not in the mood, he’d never dismissed her so.

Now she sat on the rattan chair on the back porch and waited for him to come home. She wished he wouldn’t keep such late nights – it could only brook trouble – but at least he wasn’t with Michelle and Nicey knew she should be thankful for this at least.

Audley was worried. He couldn’t get through to his mother and he knew he had to try to at least get through to his son. He pushed his head through the back and asked Nicey, “Yuh si Dean?”

“Mi a im madda?” she snapped. Audley regarded her curiously, but then took her answer to mean ‘no’ and went back inside the house. Audley wanted to find Dean before he spoke to his grandmother. He wanted to impress on him the urgency of ‘thinking straight’ and doing the right thing. Yes, his mother was a matriarch, but Audley was no fool, he knew Aunt Myrtle was not above ‘doing things her way’ even if it traversed the law. He knew a few of his son’s hang out spots and decided go check them out. He passed Michelle in the hallway.

“Yuh si Dean?” he asked.

“No,” she answered, alert to the note in his voice. “Is something wrong?”

“No, no man,” he answered. “Mi jus need fi find im…”

“Are you going out?” She called after him.

“Yeah…”

“Can I come?”

Audley was impatient. This was not a tour ride.

“I’m just bored,” she pleaded. “It would be better than jus sitting here…”

“Aright, hurry up,” he said. “Meet mi outside.”

Michelle rushed back to her room and grabbed her purse, checking that she had Gravol with her. Then she hurried down the hallway hoping Audley hadn’t changed his mind and left without her.

She could sense right away that Audley was anxious. His lips kept compressing and releasing, his fingers clenching and unclenching on the steering wheel. She wanted to say something to alleviate his stress or at least get him distracted, but she was unsure of what to say. The silence in the vehicle was becoming oppressive and she reached for the CD player if only to fill the void.

“Do, nobadda wid dat,” Audley said, his voice tinged with irrittion. “Mi cyaa deal wid de bag a nize tonight.”

“What’s wrong?” Michelle asked.

“Nutn,” he muttered.

“Is Dean in trouble?” she asked, her heart beating fast.

His head snapped around. “Wha yuh meand by dat?”

Her eyes widened, “So he is in trouble! What’s going on Uncle Audley?”

“Mi say nuh call mi so!” he snapped. “Audley wi do.”

“You’re sidestepping the question,” Michelle pointed out, sitting up straighter. “What kinda trouble id Dean in?”

“Mi did say im eena trouble?”

“You didn’t need to,” she responded. “Your body language was loud enough. Plus you didn’t deny it.”

Audley hissed his teeth in annoyance but said nothing. After a minute of silence, Michelle felt her fears increasing and demanded hotly, “What is it with you people? Why does everything have to be such a big mystery all the time? I just want to know if he’s ok – well I don’t think he is not from the way you’re acting – so just tell me what’s wrong? I have a right to know!”

Audley’s head snapped around again.

“Right Since when? A how yuh so concern bout Dean all of a sudden?” he demanded.

Michelle swallowed and attempted to be blasé. “It’s not ‘all of a sudden’! He’s my cousin, so why shouldn’t I have a right to know?”

Audley eyed her suspiciously, his mother’s cryptic comment still ringing in his ear.

“As long as yuh memba say im is yuh cousin,” he warned.

Michelle forced a laugh. “Geez, I’m not likely to forget, am I? Though it’s funny that you want me to remember that he’s my cousin but you don’t like me to call you uncle.”

Audley fell silent and Michelle sighed.

“Let’s not argue, ok?” she pleaded reaching over to rest her hand on his forearm. She felt the muscle flex and was surprised at the power in it. He certainly didn’t look that powerful. “You’re my only real ally in this house, you know.”

Audley smiled slightly. “Yuh mek it soun like yuh deh a prison.”

“Sometimes it feels like it,” she said ruefully.

“Cho man, it no dat bad.”

“That’s what you think,” she grimaced.

“Hush,” he said. “It soon dun anyway. Yuh soon gawn back a yuh yawd. Bet yuh yuh a go glad fi lef,” he teased.

Michelle thought for a moment though she really did not need to think on it. She would be glad to leave the cold house and Nicey and Myrtle. But she would miss the inquisitiveness of the children – Sheldon and Ryan. She would miss Dean and the thrills he gave her and sh would definitely miss Audley and his easy companionship.

“I’ll miss you,” she said quietly. Then she asked teasingly, “Will you miss me?”

Audley shrugged and said nothing.

Paulie swung the car into the yard and stopped just inches away from the verandah. Dean regarded him wryly and then said, “Wait fi mi,” before getting out and entering the house. Nicey had again begun wandering through the rooms, restless and unhappy, wishing she were anywhere but here. Hearing the front door bang, she rushed toward it, uncaring if she was being noisy.

“Dean!” she cried, happiness and relief evident in her normally rough voice. She ran to him and threw her arms about him. Dean stopped in surprise.

“Hey, Hey!” he pulled her arms from about his neck. “A whe yuh a do?” he whispered angrily. “Yuh laas yuh mind?”

Nicey hissed her teeth. Her emotional state had kicked caution to the curb. “Yuh know how long mi a look fi yuh?” she demanded. “Whe yuh did deh?”

Dean drew back. “A when since mi haffi ansa to yuh?” he asked.

The question stabbed her and she flinched at the pain. “Why yuh a gwan so Dean? Wha mek all of a sudden yuh a talk to mi dem way deh?”

He now hissed his teeth. This was the last thing he needed. He had to go see his grandmother and Paulie was waiting. But he couldn’t walk away from Nicey. This whole standing in the hallway talking about that was so uncustomary, so against their tacit pact of silence. He couldn’t walk away because he did not trust her to walk away too. Words flew quickly through his head; words that he could say to appease her, to silence her, to cause her to leave him alone. But before he could admit that there were none, that she would never leave him alone until she got what she wanted, she spoke and her voice was brittle.

“A she, doan? Since she come yah, mi notice how yuh a look pan har, how yuh always a try find excuse fi go tan up or siddung nex to har…”

“Nicey,” his tone was a warning.

“Yuh tink mi neva si how yuh didda look pan har when wi did deh a Dunn’s Riva? Eeh? How yuh a look pan har like yuh nuh memba say she a yuh cousin? An yuh neva once look pan mi eno, Dean,” her voice broke and he grimaced. “Not once! Whe yuh a try say? Me neva look good to?”

“Nicey,” he said again, his voice low and cautionary.

“An oonuu disappear. Yuh tink mi neva notice? A which pawt oonuu did disappear to? Eeh?”

“Nicey, watch yah…”

Her voice was rising she knew and did not care. Could not stop it if she wanted to. This was all too much. It was too much that his father had given her sons but would not give her a ring and a house. It was too much that his grandmother treated her like little more than a housekeeper, a maid. It was too much that he, the son and grandson should use her, take his pleasure from her and then dismiss her as soon as someone else came along.

“Oonuu didda [censored], a dat? Eeh? When wi couldn find yuh, a dat oonuu didda do?”

Dean grabbed her arms and squeezed. “Whe yuh nuh shut up yuh b__b__!” he snarled. “Yuh a fool? Yuh a try wake everybady?”

Tears were streaming down Nicey’s face. She was unaware of them. She only felt the words scorching her lips and the grip of his hands on her. And that’s all she wanted. She wanted his hands on her, no matter how hard he pressed. But she wanted him to come back and she wanted him to know he hurt her. She had feelings too and he couldn’t just walk all over them without acknowledging the effect.

“Why?” she taunted. “Yuh nuh waa nobady fi know? Waa keep it quiet? Pon de ‘dl’ – no dat dem say eena oonuu eediat song dem? Eeh a dat yuh waa? No waa nobady else fi know say yuh a [censored] YUH COUSIN!”

Dean slapped her. Hard. She could taste blood and she slapped him back. Hard. And she saw his muscles bunch and flex and she lowered her head slightly but did not break eye contact. She was ready. She was done being everyone’s [censored] doormat.

Dean stepped closer but stopped short when Aunt Myrtle appeared.

“Come,” she said briefly, her slight frame was dressed in a flowing white nightdress that covered her from her neck to her toes. Her thick hair was a long heavy braid down her back. In the dim light she looked like a wraith. Her displeasure was evident and there was a certain vengeful quality that even Nicey could see through her tears.

Dean stepped away from his stepmother and sauntered unconvincingly toward his grandmother. All the while Aunt Myrtle’s eyes remained trained on Nicey. The force of her stare propelled Nicey back a step or two and her arms crossed her chess in protection. Nicey regretted what she’d said to Dean and as she watched him walk away from her and to his grandmother, she wanted to tell him she was sorry. But even as Aunt Myrtle watched Nicey watching her grandson, Nicey knew she would have more to regret than losing Dean. She just did not know how much more.

Will Audley tek off wid Michelle?

Will Myrtle reveal who the father of Audley is?

Will Audley reveal seh im noh seh Dean a jacket?

Will Nicey reveal that any of Audleys sons are jackets?

Will Myrtle kick off and die? or change her ways to become more loving?
