There is no town called Vere in Clarendon,but the plain is named vere plains which encompass many villages,in the southern section of the parish.
Vere technical High is the closest you will find to any place named vere,but it is located in Hayes .

On the first map of the pre English Jamaica, the names seem strange.... Spanish Town was St Jago de la Vega. Bluefeilds is not a Spanish word.. Campo Azul

(((RambleON)) The parish of Clarendon was named in honour of the celebrated Lord Chancellor. The parish of Vere, now merged in it, was named after Vere, daughter of Sir. Edward Herbert, Attorney General and first wife of Sir Thomas Lynch, who, with her two sons, died on her passage from England to the island in 1683. Carlisle Bay, the scene of the main battle with a foreign foe, which occurred in Jamaica during the British occupation, is on the south west coast of the parish.


There is quite a bit of varied types of info on each parish, quite interesting.

The counties of Cornwall, Middlesex and Surrey have no political representation. There is no significance in their existence other than there being noted on the maps of Jamaica.

The county of Cornwall is reflected in the major public hospital that serves the western parishes of Jamaica by name only. The Cornwall Regional Hospital is governed not by a county board but by the Ministry of Health.

The counties of Middlesex and Surrey have no such regional hospitals by name, but central Jamaica which in effect is Middlesex is served by the Hargreaves Hospital in Mandeville and eastern Jamaica, Surrey is served by the 2 hospitals. One is the University Hospital at Mona and the Kingston Public Hospital on North St. downtown Kingston.
The Pricncess Margaret Hospital in Morant Bay and the one in Port Antonio serve the people in the eastern region. The Black River Hospital, St. Ann`s Bay Hospital, the Falmouth Hospital, Percy Junor Hospital which by he way has a ward in Manchester and wards in Clarendon such is the location that it rests on the borders of the 2 parishes in the town of Spauldings. These aforementioned are secondary hospitals.
The counties are to us Jamaicans a mere illustration on the map. When we cross boundaries many of us are aware of entering an exiting parishes, but hardly if never, are we aware of the counties.

Thank you, SandiF, Dr. Dudd, and SistahD (and BB for starting the thread). I believe there's some connection with the Osbourne Store area - which on some of the old maps (1675-1813), would have been in the area named Vere.

Present day Osbourne Store is on the main road between May Pen and Mandeville.

Vere as Dudd said is in Hayes, south Clarendon region, south of where Osbourne Store is located

The counties were created to centralise judicial activities ... courts of justices for the parishes represented in each county. I doubt if that purpose is still in effect.

Yes SandiF in the days of slow horse and buggy transport or `walk foot` the centralized theme served purpose, but as things moved faster the purpose became obsolete....but the boundaries stuck on our maps.

yes the courts 'circuit' as it is called,still function on the county basis. somewhat like a travelling circuit court.

By the way, my family is from an area that stradles the border between Hanover and Westmoreland. We often say we are from Cornwall. (Sometimes I think that's so no one has to admit some of us are from Hanover.)

Are we the only ones that do that? (Come to think of it, my granny always referred to St. Thomas as "St. Thomas in the East," I never understood that reference until I saw the older maps.)

The following are excerpts from Lady Nugent's Journal. She was the New Jersey-born wife of the English governor of Jamaica in the early 1800s. The excerpt talks about her stops in St. David and St. Thomas in the Eeast, during her tour of the island in March and April, 1802.

March 6:
Breakfast at 6, and start for Albion [in St. David], another place of Mr. S. Taylor's. [Simon Taylor, the richest man in Jamaica, who lived at Liguanea.] Leave my dear N. [the Governor] at Rock Fort, to review the Yallahs and Bull Bay companies of militia, as well as to view the Fort. At Albion I found a large party of gentlemen assembled. - General N. came about 3. We dined at 5. I tried to taste the brawn, but it made me sicker than ever. - The road this day was beautfiul, but tremendous. Steep rocky roads, rivers to ford, high rocky hills to pass over, thick woods for the carriage to be dragged through, aloes and a variety of beautful plants and shrubs in full bloom, and innumerable parties of negroes, laughing, dancing, and singing, and dressing their food on the roadside, and all hurrying to get to Kingston; for alas! Sunday is the great market day. It is a sad custom, but I fear difficult to reform or alter in any way. After giving audience to the coloured ladies, went to bed at nine.

March 7th:
Reading our books, and dearest N. with me. - Then set off at 7 for the Speaker's. First go to Cow Harbour, and see a small fort there; then, after a most delightful drive, something the same as yesteday, only more majestic and awful, fording large rivers, &c. we arrived at Montpellier, where a large party assembled. - Mr. Robinson and Mr. Milner were the only two gentlemen new to me.

The house is most delighfully situated, on a little mountain, and in front is the sea. Behind are mountains rising above mountains, and the famous Blue Mountains in the distance. Beautful trees and shrubs around the house. In short, it is altogether indescribably beautiful.

I went to my own room, and lay down to read, as usual. My favourite book just now is Dodd's Reflections upon Death. On asking Johnson [her maid] (who is deaf) for it, she said, "Pink or blue to-day, ma'am," thinking of my shoes, as always being the colour of my dress. - Dinner, Creole French, and very good; but I was very sick, and wished myself in bed, where I soon was, after giving audience, as usual, to the coloured ladies, while I took my tea, and leaving the gentlemen to their cigars, &c. for which, I am sure, they were much obliged to me.

March 8:
Write my journal before we breakfasted; set out to review the St. Thomas in the East, Yallahs and Morant companies of militia, at Belvidere. The speaker drove me in his curricle - The rest of the party were on horseback. After the review, we all went to a place called Licence [Lyssons], another estate of Mr. Taylor's. - The situation is high, and the view magnificent. - The musquitoes tormenting! - An immense party at dinner. - My usual levee of coloured ladies. One told me she was twenty-four years old, and shewed me her grand-child. I found afterwards that she was fifty-four; but they have no idea of time or distance. They reckon the one by the number of Christian masquerades they can recollect, and for the other have no scale. If you ask how far to such a place, they will say, "two or tree mile," if should be twelve or fourteen. If it ecceeds that, they say, "far enough, massa," or "too far, massa."

20 years ago in hinterland Trelawny, I wanted to go to the store, so I asked the man who worked on the farm where.
