Up de road and round de corner is infamous in Jamaica. A Jamaican will tell you that for a five minute walk and a five hour walk. Mek no diffrence. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

Lawd god, whenever a Jamaican tells me something is "just dung de road," I just turn around and forget it, for just dung de road is generally a euphemism in Jamaica that means you are going to waste your entire day on a fool's errand and you'll never quite reach "dung de road," at least not today. And if you do, whatever you needed dung de road surely will not be available when you reach.

So whenever a vendor in Jamaica insists that all I have to do is go dung de road, mi just kiss mi teet dem, put on fimi screw fayce, get irritable -- as only a Jamaican can, and mek dem know sey mi not trodding dung hany road!!!

On the border of Hanover and Westmoreland ...

One day I'll tell you about touring Jamaica on the back of a motorcycle, and making personal discoveries of some of *the* most beautiful areas that are found on the border of Hanover and Westmoreland. What was so much remarkable about it was I'd lived my entire life in Jamaica and only saw scenes of such places on programs such as "Hilly n Gully Ride Oh".

My earliest memories are of those lush, green hills. I remember the clay roads and the land's fertility -- everywhere was crops a growing.

I would love to hear about your experience. I haven't been back in a very long time, and it's unlikely I will any time soon. Alas, I have a nostalgic streak. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

Love this thread! Very interesting. Okay, Sandi et al....who wants to tell me about Hanover/Westmoreland border? I drive through it on may way to/from Little Bay and MoBay...but, what should I do? Where do I ask them to take me? Stop? See? I will start another thread if I should, if there is alot of info.

The drive up to Mayfield Falls from Little London or Sav and then down into Lucea or Green Island i can suppose is out of this world.

Sandi are you talking about all those roads back in Silver Spring, Froom, Grange Hill, and points east and west where you can come out near Orange Bay or go the other way and end up just about anywhere, including Montego Bay if you go far enough? If that is the same area, I remember some beautiful vista's from up there. I went riding back there on a scooter one day, made lot's a little stops and had huge fun trying to ditch one of those "tourist guide wanna be's" that followed me and a girlfriend who was riding on back of my scooter, from out of the old gas station on Nompriel road, and trying to get us to follow him. I haven't laughed that hard many times as that, it was a fun day. We finally got rid of him when we came back out by Silver Spring and headed to Negril Spots and Little Bay. The poor guy ran out of enough gas to keep persuing us, LOL!

I'm with you on the nostalgic streak here, It's been awhile for me too, and it's gonna be another good while still...

It's a funny thing, and probably just silly too, but I don't remember any of the roads having names. (All the roads around us were clay and dirt roads, and the nearby village wasn't more than two or three shops.)

But I DO remember all the major potholes on the roads having names. Me and my brother used to love laughing after that and telling our American friends too.

Of course, the roads probably had names, but as children we weren't aware of them. But we always loved the way how every likkle tree and rock muss have a name, but no one need fi know name of road. When once we asked the gardner what the road name, im tell wi sey "road."

Q, BYS - the social conventions of the time were that the Governor's wife only met with coloured women in her bedroom, and not in any higher social setting such as a dinner. Here's a bit from the Introductory chapter of the Journal, entitled Notes on a Planter Society:

The population of Jamaica in Mrs. Nugent's time was composed of three classes of persons, each with a distinct legal status; slaves, whites and "free coloureds". The free coloured were second class citizens with limited civil rights. In order to put an individual coloured person on the same legal footing as the child of English parents, a special Act of the Assembly was required; most of the persons benfiting from such Acts were the natural children of well-to-do white men, like the group of coloured ladies whom Mrs. Nugent meets on her tour ("they are all daughters of Members of Assembly, officers, &c. &c."). Coloured people were barred from government office and the professions. When an Ensign in the 60th Regt. was found to be a mulatto, the natural son of an old soldier, the War Office had to be advised of "the Propriety of removing him from the Service, or to a Station where his Pedigree will become a Secret, as People of Color are not considered eligible to fill any Situation in the West Indies." Consequently they were not to be met with in official society in Spanish Town. It is very doubtful whether a coloured person ever sat down to dinner with Mrs. Nugent. When staying at planters' houses, she receives the coloured ladies apart from the rest of the company, usually in her bedroom. According to the missionary historian Gardner, it was not until some thirty years after her time, when Lord Mulgrave was Governor (and more signfiicantly, perhaps, when the free coloured had achieved full citizenship), that coloured guests were invited to functions at King's House.

i have found many wonderful areas driving between hanover and westmoreland.... when i am in Negril.. which i dont like.. its what i do.. get out in the car . grab a map.. or not. and just go get lost....

i came upon an area also i had not been on my last time in negril.. and said.. next time.. i got to get out and walk.. i was dying for my camera....

maybe it's time to go back there.. been a long time..
