Re: What is Obeah?
I don't agree with the idea that the tradition die out totally. It would certainly depend on the practice. Many things are made known through revelations. For example, even though the knowledge of the plants is passed down - even this knowledge can be extended based on how the person learnt the science.
Obeah knowledge is not just connected to the word. The knowledge can also be found in patterns, such as in folklore, music, games, etc
Healing with fire is definitely something to be learnt, however, healing with the plants can be revealed by the knowledge of the characteristics of the sickness as well as the THING to cure.
After all, the plants of Africa and the plants in the Caribbean are not the same, yet an obeahman still find the cure. How come? I wouldn't say it isn't pure because he is not using the original plants.
Many self-determined obeahmen have a certain lifestyle that assist them in these revelations.
How pure obeah ever was is also questionable as the purity of the people themselves. I don't support the theory of the pure Africans which often result from racism based on the pure-bred.
It seems to me it is our European influence which drive the need for us to classify things. And that is why obeah seems to be everything and nothing at the same time.
As to the bible, I would say it has been a double-bind for many Caribbeah people because of certain similarities - especially the ghost theories
In my opinion, many obeah people today are not doing as they should, but i see no dífference with them and the preacher
As a matter of fact, what is in the favour of the obeahman is that if you had gone to the doctor you would have to pay.
Why would anyone want to know what obeah is btw?
Why would anyone need to know facts about obeah?

Let me hasten to add that it was mentioned of Haiti and the priest and the "candles." Also note that although they tried to eliminate the practice the Haitians under pain of death held on to Voodoo, and even incorporated RC rites in some of their practices...and yes Sukuna, some of these rites could have been copied by the Church, who REALLY knows? We just need the facts rather than accounts disseminated to satify personal agendas.
..and let me throw this in, this is why I disagreed that religion can be imposed, considering that many have held on to their indigenous religions throughout the ages and belief is voluntary.
