I beleive that Garvey was spot on on this editorial... And it is one of the things Garvey wrote that was historically spot on...

He did highlight hte fact that despite the claim to the contrary that slavery was abolished ... Note Garvey acknoweldges the equality of human beings in England as opposed to Africa... The fact of the matter Selassie was a fuedal lord in the 20th centuary.... Had he modernised his country in 41 independence would have come easier to Africa.. As a symbol of Africa he was a failure... In Selassie we have embodied the entire glory and failure of the post colonial system.. He was a Mugabe prior to Mugabe.. He over threw a leader claim leadership then personalised it...

A love the fact that he was god.. Well god died with demetia and had the glory of being buried in a toilet.... For those who glory in his leadership as a black Man.. it is worthy to note not only does Garvey call him what he was a despotic monach, but he beleived his own propoganda...

The claim of Selassie decent from the solomonic kings is comparible to that of Augustus Romulus to the Ceasars.. Both were the last Emperors of Monarchy.... both claim to the were frail at best .. Like that of Churchil being decended from Fredrick the Great...

I seem to remember reading that Ethiopians generally don't identify themselves as black and don't particularly like black people. If that is the case, no reason why Selassie would have been any different.

wow for a country as large & diverse as ethiopia that is really a blanket statement...seem to remember reading; that's not good enough...
if selassie did not consider himself black why did he say 'until the ignoble & unhappy regimes that hold our BROTHERS in angola, in mozambique, south africa have been toppled, utterly destroyed'...why was he the first african leader to ever set aside a land grant for blacks (africans is the term he prefered) in the west to return to the MOTHERLAND...

why do jamaicans continue to spit out negativity that 'they remember reading somewhere' about selassie & they've never really looked into the matter...
oh yea jamaicans derided marcus garvey when he was alive about that black power foolishness & the rastaman (who they also thought were mad)was the only ones who really listened to garvey...now everyone loves garvey;

you and i both know that it is hatred that drives any argument you indulge regarding the last emperor of ethiopia as evidenced by the fact you ALWAYS repeat the fraudulent claim that selassie was buried under a toilet...a claim which i saw mengistu (the man who supposedly buried him) ridicule with my own eyes...
your omparing of selassie to mugabe is beyond ridiculous at best as selassie rose to power in a thousands year old nation that had very little contact with the outside world prior to he & his father & no modern infrastructure while mugabe succeeded a colonial power...then you claim selassie failed to modernize although he did more in 60 years in terms of modernization than had been done in the previous 3000 years!
you are dishonest & biased...your people may have died out but 'we africans will fight' to quote the emperor...

These statements may be considered very severe, and in fact, they are. We could have been otherwise apologetic and sympathetic, but that would have been only if we were dealing with a Coptic Priest or a Religious Monk and not a[n] Emperor who held and presided over the political trust of twelve million people of his own country, and the political destiny of the entire Negro race. This little misguided Emperor could not realise that he held in his hands the political trust of the hundreds of millions of Negroes of the world, men and women, who were looking up toward the firm establishment of political sovereignty, and that Ethiopia, like Liberia and Haiti were to them prizes of glory to be perpetuated and strengthened in the maintenance of the dignity of that black race that other men have claimed to be incompetent, inferior and unworthy, which every black man must disprove. blu i know you respect garvey & to the brethren of rastafari garvey is a much esteemed prophet & elder...but he was wrong on this one...we wouldn't judge the emperor by garvey's hurt harsh & bitter words any more than we would judge garvey by the harshly critical words of a w.e.b. dubois or the u.s. government which said he was a criminal or the jamaican gov't which hounded him or the jamaican people who sold him out...
if you want to highlight garvey's criticism of the emperor during the fascist italian attack (which they succeeded in occupying a part of the country by using poison gas)...then you must also highlight the fact that liberians did not allow garvey to build a base in liberia...
garvey failed to get a foothold in africa & was bitter that ethiopia, his last hope was now occupied...
but in the long run garvey was a success & this is how we judge him...he inspired africa's independence movements...in the long run selassie was a success as he inspired the great african awakening in the west & on the continent...
we the brethren of rastafari will continue to honor our great prophets rather than find things with which to break them down like the misguided jamaican people continue to do...they of the high murder rate who refuse to love their brothers & sisters...rasta nah join dem game...

Selassie did much for Ethiopia in trying times....and again in trying times, some said he did not do enuff....i.e. his not being more proactive in di time of famine....but we all know dat he was older and more reliant on dose around him an u know some people care more about wat dem gain dat wat dem people losing...unfortunately he had some of dose standing in his stead in areas dat mattered
